Background Museum Manager Role The current role of Acting Museum Manager and Curator is due for expiry on 29 December 2017. It has been focussed on collection management and conservation, displays and exhibitions and the public education program. Museum Redevelopment In November 2015 a ‘Freshwater Bay Museum Briefing Paper’ was provided to Council detailing the current status of the Museum, how it has developed over the years, and highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the current structure. Following which, at its OCM on 21 June 2016, Council endorsed the Freshwater Bay Museum’s ‘Future Directions Plan 2016-2020’, a document created through stakeholder consultation and research to support and guide the Museum into the medium term future. In July and August 2016, the Museum team identified and worked with Museum stakeholders to develop the Expressions of Interest (EOI) Document, to seek the appropriate consultant/s to create the Facility Development Plan. In September 2016, Hames Sharley was appointed to undertake the Concept Design. This design was endorsed at OCM on 21 March 2017. Discussion Museum Manager Role Given the upcoming expiry of the acting role, the permanent position of Manager – Heritage Services has been advertised. This new role is taking on a slightly different focus of human resource management, marketing management, customer development and relations and project management. Background An updated report is provided every meeting. Discussion Collection Audit: At the beginning of this year, staff commenced the deaccessioning project, which incorporates an intensive audit of the entire collection. Many artefacts have been boxed for years and most are packed with of a different classifications. All boxes are unpacked and repacked to correct this and for the replacement of tissue paper. Over time tissue paper suffers the effects of off-gassing and will no longer protect the artefact. Artefacts can be singled out for needed conservation work or in some cases for deaccessioning based on the Museum policy and procedures. All the artefacts are then repacked by classification, taking into consideration preventative conservation practices. At this stage, staff have audited the education collection, manchester, handcrafts, books, food technology, personal effects and some domestic equipment. Currently the large tool collection is being completed. To ensure best practice through the deaccessioning project, the Acting Museum Manger and Curator had a meeting at the National Trust with Ms Sarah Murphy (Director Conservation). Approximately 10 years ago, Ms Murphy took on the unbelievably difficult task of deaccessioning over 7000 artefacts from the National Trust Collection and has gained a wealth of experience that she was more than happy to share with the Freshwater Bay Museum. One idea, using a scoring system to assess individual artefacts based on main requirements of the Museum’s Collection Policy, has now been incorporated into the survey process. Photo Collection: Page (8) FRESHWATER BAY MUSEUM COMMITTEE AGENDA 4 DECEMBER, 2017 Staff are continuing to rescan the entire photographic collection. At this stage, all small photos received between 1976 -1987 have been completed.
