The one-story low-slung building used to be St. Antho- ny's CatholicChurch. Beforethat, itwas a community theater, which is why there are no pews, only a semicircle of tiered seats facing the old stage, now an altar. On a Sunday morning in late Febru- ary, 38-year-old Pastor HyungJin "Sean" Moon, son of the late Rev. Sun Mlnrng Moon, entered stage right wearing a white hoodie and cargo pants. He strapped on a leather headband and picked up a microphone. "Okay, take it away," he said to the electric pianist and two female vocalists who function as the choir. Theylaunched into the first offour songs: "O, light ofgrace, shining above / lighting mydim shadowed way..." The 2oo-plus congregants packed into the room sang along with gusto. Pastor Sean stood by his front-row seat with his wife at his side, wringing his hands like an orchestra conductor. The song cycle ended and, after abriefprayer, he took center stage. "Look at all these crowns of sovereignty!" he exclaimed, gazing upon his audience. One tenet of the Sanctuary Church is that all people are independent kings and queens in God's Kingdom - akind of dont-tread- on-me notion of personal sovereignty. • The Legacy of Unification Political Theology
The Legacy of Unification Political Theology Dan Fefferman August 28, 2017 "Political theology" investigates the ways in which theological concepts relate to politics, society and economics. In this article, I examine the ways in which the expression of the political theology of the Unification Movement has evolved since its early days, especially in the U.S. From its beginning, Unificationism has had to deal with tensions between its vision of One World Under God and its commitment to ridding the world of threats to that vision, especially that of communism. This tension led to various alliances in the political world that have impacted the Unificationist community significantly and remain unresolved today. Victory Over Communism From the 1960s through early 1980s, the expression of Unification political theology in the public realm was largely focused on "Victory Over Communism." The movement's commitment to world unity transcending race and nationality was prominent in its spiritual and evangelical work, but took a back seat to VOC in terms of activism. Dan Fefferman Divine Principle (DP) itself provides the rationale for giving priority to VOC: "The Third World War is the final conflict in the providence of restoration. Through this war, God intends that the democratic world bring the communist world to submission and build the ideal world… [W]hether the Third World War is waged by force of arms or as an ideological conflict depends upon the responsibility of the people…serving the providence of God…. [I]t is inescapable that this worldwide conflict take place." Reflecting this imperative, Rev. Sun Myung Moon founded the International Federation for Victory Over Communism in 1969 as a major ideological offensive.

Unification Church of the United States From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Unification Church of the United States is a new religious movement in the United States of America. It began in the 1950s and 1960s when missionaries from Japan and South Korea were sent to the United States by the international Unification Church's founder and leader Sun Myung Moon. It expanded in the 1970s and then became involved in controversy due to its theology, its political activism, and the life style of its members. Since then it has been involved in many areas of American society and has itself gone through substantial changes. Among them were Young Oon Kim, Sang Ik-Choi, Bo Hi Pak, David S. C. Kim, and Yun Soo Lim. Missionary work took place in Washington D.C., New York, Oregon, and California.[1] The church first came to public notice in the United States after sociology student John Lofland studied Young Oon Kim's group and published his findings as a doctoral thesis entitled: The World Savers: A Field Study of Cult Processes , which was published in 1966 in book form by Prentice-Hall as Doomsday Cult: A Study of Conversion, Proselytization, and Maintenance of Faith.

Summary Report & Reflections ‘The Life and Legacy of SMM and the Unification Movements in Scholarly Perspective’ Faculty of Comparative Study of Religion and Humanism (FVG) Antwerp, Belgium 29-30 May 2017 __________________________________________________________________ Organized by: The European Observatory of Religion and Secularism (Laïcité) in partnership with Faculty of Comparative Study of Religion and Humanism (FVG), CESNUR & CLIMAS (Bordeaux) This is a summary-report and a reflection on the recent conference in Antwerp, Belgium. The text is a compilation of impressions and reflections by Dr. Andrew Wilson, Dr. Mike Mickler, Dan Fefferman, Hugo Veracx, Peter Zoehrer and Catriona Valenta. The number of participants (including scholars & organizers) was around 40: 15 persons belonging to Sanctuary Church, 8 participants from the Preston (H1) group, 8 from FFWPU and 9 neutral (ex-members, scholars, etc.). The conference was devoted almost exclusively to examining the background and development of the schisms that have emerged in the Unification Movement since the death of the founder. DAY ONE The first day was consistent with the conference theme of the „Life and legacy of Sun Myung Moon and Unification Movements“ in a scholarly perspective. Dr. Eileen Barker led off with an excellent keynote address titled "The Unification Church: A Kaleidoscopic History." She looked at the UM as a religious movement, a spiritual movement, a charismatic movement, a messianic movement, a millenarian movement, a utopian movement, a political movement, a financial-business movement, a criminal movement, a sectarian movement, a denominationalizing movement, and a schismatic movement. It was a good introduction to the conference as a whole. Alexa Blonner followed with a very excellent presentation on the UM's antecedents in Neo-Confucian thought and also the ways in which the UM went beyond that heritage.
