STEWARDSHIP OFFICE The annual conference of the International Catholic Stewardship Conference will be held on September 16- 19 in Chicago. The theme is “With Hearts of Fire”, drawing from Luke’s account of meeting Jesus along the road to Emmaus. While this is an expensive conference, it features the best speakers from around the country and it is being held close to home. To reduce costs, Sr. Laura Goedken has arranged for us to stay at the Cenacle Retreat Center for $65 per night per person for a single room and $45 per night per person for a double room – opposed to $250 per night at the hotel. We can park our cars there and take public transportation to the conference, which is at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

Faithful Citizenship and Religious Freedom Presentation: Monday, June 11, 11:00 a.m., Diocese of Davenport. Tom Chapman, Executive Director for the Iowa Catholic Conference will be the presenter. Learn what the Church is encouraging us to do in our political involvement, the current situation with Religious Freedom in the United States and more about the “Political Responsibility Do’s and Don’ts.” You may attend via webinar or in person. Fortnight for Freedom: The United States Conference of Catholic (USCCB) has called for a “Fortnight for Freedom”. This fourteen day period of prayer, education, and action in support of Religious Freedom begins on June 21, the Feast of SS. John Fisher and Thomas More and ends on Independence Day, July 4.

Bishop Martin Amos will open the Fortnight for Freedom with a Holy Hour for Religious Freedom on Thursday, June 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport. Parishes have been invited to provide opportunities during this Fortnight for Freedom. The Catholic Messenger will be publicizing the activities around the diocese.

2012 Pacem in Terris Award Ceremony: Sunday, September 16, 2:00 p.m. Christ the King Chapel, St. Ambrose University, Davenport. Kim Bobo has been selected as this year’s recipient for her local and national actions to mobilize people of faith in the battle to improve wages, benefits and conditions for workers in the low- wage economy. FAITH FORMATION OFFICE Catholics in Action, our annual high school youth service retreat, will be held June 24-26 at Regina High School in Iowa City. CIA brings nearly 100 Catholic youth (incoming freshmen through graduating seniors) together for three days of service, prayer, learning and fun. The Iowa Christian Leadership Institute will be held Aug. 5-10 at the Christian Conference Center south of Newton. National Evangelization Teams (NET) Ministries will be providing retreats to parishes and schools in our diocese in late September and early October. Mrs. Kim Bobo Executive Director, Interfaith Worker Justice Mrs. Bobo has been selected as this year’s recipient for her local and national actions to mobilize people of faith in the battle to improve wages, benefits and conditions for workers in the low-wage economy.

In 1991, she founded the Chicago Interfaith Committee on Worker Issues out of which the vision for the National Interfaith Committee on Worker Justice was developed.

In 2003, she was a key organizer of the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride which mobilized people of faith to speak out on the abuses and exploitations of immigrant workers.
