Confusion of the heart. Quotable moments. Mischievous servants. A contrived weekend in the country. Sounds like one of Shakespeare’s comedies, doesn’t it? It’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with a Stephen Sondheim score but it is so much more. Adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s 1959 film, Smiles of a Summer Night, Sondheim’s operetta leaves room to explore loneliness, aging, suicidal self- loathing, and the disappointments of missed opportunity. Choices have consequences, and relationships sting as often as they soothe.

I, like so many others, am a long-standing Stephen Sondheim fan. His music and lyrics are second to none and from the instant you hear the first few notes of a song from Jennie Gray Connard, Director any of his long list of works, you know it’s his. My very first introduction to Stephen Sondheim was A Little Night Music. I must have been somewhere between 8 and 10 years old and it was one of the many musicals my family would listen to during “Saturday cleaning” day. There was something so special about the music and the way it moved and ebbed and flowed that just struck me, even at such a young age.

When I was 11 years old I was so fortunate to get to see my oldest cousin, who I completely idolized, playing the part of Fredrika in a production in . Seeing the music come to life was fantastic! I was mesmerized by its elegance and beauty. I’m sure I didn’t understand the adult themes both complex and simple but it didn’t matter, the music and the brilliance of the story and how it intertwined so many characters thoroughly entertained me.

I feel incredibly blessed to get to direct this show at Coronado Playhouse. This theatre has been like a second home to me for many years and the staff and board have entrusted me with some fabulous pieces of theatrical works but I think this will be my favorite. My most recent endeavors have been, fun, funny, irreverent and downright naughty. I’m thrilled to share this lovely story filled with family, love, lust, humor, heartache and happy endings.

Please sit back and relax and let the music wash over you. Get social with us!
