Augustine and the Art of Ruling in the Carolingian Imperial Period This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language. Sophia Moesch is currently an SNSF-funded postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford, working on a project entitled ‘Developing Principles of Good Govern- ance: Latin and Greek Political Advice during the Carolingian and Macedonian Reforms’. Ethiopian calendar From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Ethiopian calendar (Amharic: የኢትዮጵያ ዘመን አቆጣጠር?; yä'Ityoṗṗya zämän aḳoṭaṭär) is the principal calendar used in Ethiopia and also serves as the liturgical year for Christians in Eritrea and Ethiopia belonging to the Orthodox Tewahedo Churches, Eastern Catholic Churches and Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. It is a solar calendar which in turn derives from the Egyptian Calendar, but like the Julian Calendar, it adds a leap day every four years without exception, and begins the year on August 29th or August 30th in the Julian Calendar. A gap of 7–8 years between the Ethiopian and Gregorian Calendars results from an alternate calculation in determining the date of the Annunciation. Like the Coptic calendar, the Ethiopic calendar has 12 months of 30 days plus 5 or 6 epagomenal days, which comprise a thirteenth month. The Ethiopian months begin on the same days as those of the Coptic calendar, but their names are in Ge'ez. The 6th epagomenal day is added every 4 years, without exception, on August 29 of the Julian calendar, 6 months before the corresponding Julian leap day. Thus the first day of the Ethiopian year, 1 Mäskäräm, for years between 1900 and 2099 (inclusive), is usually September 11 (Gregorian). It, however, falls on September 12 in years before the Gregorian leap year. In the Gregorian Calendar Year 2015; the Ethiopian Calendar Year 2008 began on the 12th September (rather than the 11th of September) on account of this additional epagomenal day occurring every 4 years. And the unlearned say that it is a contradiction in terms. How can time which is the totality and the compound of all days be improved by days which are better than the rest? This really is pulling time up by its own bootstraps. It can't be done. Time bettering days are nonsense. Having published my first study on the calendar in 1910 and my last in 1952, I am taking this highly unexpected summons to replace our friend Booth, the impressive reader of Shakespeare, as my opportunity to reorganize my calendaric and time studies around William Shakespeare. Shakespeare's and my own thesis is that mankind in the Christian era lives in a pluralism of intersecting and overlapping calendars; that this is the distinction of the Christian era as against all others, Jewish»' Chinese, Roman, Aztec and all the rest. Our era is the era of pluralism in timing, and this is officially its character. Jesus said to the man whom he saw working on a Sabbath: "Man, il^you don't know what you are doing, you are cur sed. How ever, if you do know why you are working you are blessed", and this word of the Lord of the Eons of Eons has become fiesh in the pluralism of every Western Man's own eons. -

Chapter 2. Literary approaches There is a still-increasing quantity of evidence attesting to the long life and wide dissemination of `Properties', in the form of manuscripts, incunables and fragments of the 19 Books, and in other medieval writings deemed to be derived from the compilation. In the past, students of `Properties' worked in some isolation on locally available manuscripts and printed materials, and separate scholarly traditions developed in European countries, each with their own claims to affinity with Bartholomew. These include France, where he studied and where most of the Latin manuscripts reside; Germany, where he taught and wrote; Italy, birthplace of the Franciscan Order and location of the earliest vernacular translation; and England. Now, researchers have the benefit of easier access to manuscripts and incunables. In addition, they have the benefit of a century of insights and labours from other scholars and can gain a clearer picture of the context in which the compiler lived and worked. Over the past century, researchers have focused mainly on the identity and career of Bartholomaeus Anglicus; on the manuscript tradition of the Latin `Properties' and the English translation, On the Properties of Things; on the nature of the text; and on the genre that comprises `Properties' and other medieval compilations of knowledge. The accumulation of studies reflects changes in the way the modern world has responded to a medieval compilation of knowledge and its related concepts. The search for the compiler and his work In 1888 Léopold Delisle brought Bartholomew to the attention of European scholars when he catalogued and wrote about a set of singly-bound manuscripts in the Bibliothèque nationale, Paris, which all dealt with the properties of things. -

Constructing Saint Louis in John the Good’s Grandes Chroniques de France (Royal MS. 16 G. VI) Anne D. Hedeman King John the Good of France’s Grandes Chroniques de France (Royal MS. 16 G. VI) is unique among the approximately seventy surviving illuminated copies of the chronicle. Not only does it contain a revised text that has been thoroughly annotated in its margins throughout the manuscript, it also incorporates an unprecedented cycle of over 400 one- and two-column wide miniatures that include over 600 individual scenes that both present Saint Louis as a powerful model for conduct for the young prince and that visually promote Valois legitimacy. These visual and textual characteristics break with prior and subsequent royal tradition; those who planned the manuscript seem to have ignored a freely accessible model in the royal library: the firstGrandes Chroniques (Paris, Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, MS. 782) illustrated with twenty historiated initials, fifteen single column miniatures and one two-column miniature that had been presented to King Philip III around 1280.1 Why is King John’s manuscript so densely illuminated and so different in format and textual contents from all other Grandes Chroniques? An examination of the interaction between the textual rhetoric of the revised chronicle and the visual rhetoric of its expanded pictorial cycle begins to answer this question, for it elides the chronicle with a contemporary, densely illustrated, royal copy of Vincent of Beauvais’s Miroir historial, the first two volumes of which survive (Leiden, University Library, MS. 396 Agrarian Metaphors 397 The Bible provided homilists with a rich store of "agricultural" metaphors and symbols) The loci classici are passages like Isaiah's "Song of the Vineyard" (Is. 5:1-7), Ezekiel's allegories of the Tree (Ez. 15,17,19:10-14,31) and christ's parables of the Sower (Matt. 13: 3-23, Mark 4:3-20, Luke 8:5-15) ,2 the Good Seed (Matt. 13:24-30, Mark 4:26-29) , the Barren Fig-tree (Luke 13:6-9) , the Labourers in the Vineyard (Matt. 21:33-44, Mark 12:1-11, Luke 20:9-18), and the Mustard Seed (Matt. 13:31-32, Mark 4:30-32, Luke 13:18-19). Commonplace in Scripture, however, are comparisons of God to a gardener or farmer,5 6 of man to a plant or tree, of his soul to a garden, 7and of his works to "fruits of the spirit". 8 Man is called the "husbandry" of God (1 Cor. 3:6-9), and the final doom which awaits him is depicted as a harvest in which the wheat of the blessed will be gathered into God's storehouse and the chaff of the damned cast into eternal fire. Medieval scriptural commentaries and spiritual handbooks helped to standardize the interpretation of such figures and to impress them on the memories of preachers (and their congregations). Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th. -

Starting with a few scattered hints in the works of Archaic and Classic Greek authors, including Aristotle, the first treatment of clays as a part of mineralogy is by Theophrastus. This basic tradition was further supplemented by Roman agricultural writers (Cato, Columella), Hellenistic authors (the geographer Strabo and the physicians Dioscorides and Galen), the Roman engineer- architect Vitruvius, and finally summarized in Pliny’s encyclopedia Naturalis historia, which has become the main source for later authors, including Agricola. It is shown to what extent Agricola’s work is just a great summary of this traditional knowledge and to what extent Agricola’s work must be considered as original. In particular, Agricola’s attempt to a rational, combinatorical classification of “earths” is recalled, and a plausible explanation is given for his effort to include additional information on Central European clay deposits and argillaceous raw material occurrences. However, it is shown that – in contrast to common belief – Agricola was not the first to include “earths” in a mineralogical system. This had been done almost one thousand years earlier by Isidore of Seville.
