ONE OF THESE CHANGES IS REPRESENTED BY A BETTER CONTOURING OF STATE BOUNDARIES. STATES ARE UNDERGOING THROUGH A PROCESS OF CENTRALISATION AND TERRITORIALISATION, WHICH IS REFLECTED IN A BETTER ESTABLISHMENT AND DEMARCATION OF FRONTIERS. AT A THEORETICAL LEVEL, THIS PROCESS IS INFLUENCED BY A REBIRTH OF ROMAN LEGAL TRADITIONS. THIS PAPER TRIES TO PRESENT SOME MODELS OF THE ESTABLISHMENT AND DEMARCATION OF BORDERS THROUGHOUT THE EUROPEAN CONTINENT. MORE PRECISELY: PRINCIPLES OF BORDER DELIMITATION IN THE ITALIAN AREA; BORDER BETWEEN SPAIN AND FRANCE ON THE PYRENEES MOUNTAINS; NORTH-EASTERN FRONTIER OF FRANCE; THE FRONTIER OF EXPASION IN THE RUSSIAN STEPPES; ENGLAND’S BOUNDARIES WITH SCOTLAND AND IRELAND AND THE OTTOMAN-HABSBURG MILITARY FRONTIER. THE PAPER WILL ALSO DESCRIBE METHODS OF DEMARCATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF BOUNDARIES AND THE TRANSITION,THAT HAPPENS IN SOME INSTANCES, FROM JURISDICTION TO STATE SOVEREIGNITY. KEYWORDS: FRONTIER, DEMARCATION, BORDER, LEGAL TRADITION, STATE INTRODUCTION Any political authority that wishes to effectively govern a territory, an area, a jurisdiction must have physical limits. The position and the role of these limitations affect the lives of people on both sides of the border. Frontiers,

ÀÍÒÐÎÏÎÍÈÌÈß GIOROCEANU, Alina (Craiova, Romania) ON ROMANIAN POLITICAL NICKNAMES Çà ïðîçâèùàòà íà ðóìúíñêèòå ïîëèòèöè On Romanian Political Nicknames The nickname which is given to a person and is initially used by a small group of people turns into a byname as the person becomes more popular in society. The byname contains indications about the individuality or the public image of its carrier. There is also a connection with the physical and psychic features of the person or to activities or events connected with him or her. On the political scene (the Romanian political scene is no exception) a byname is used as a weapon for disctediting or demonizing political oppo- nents. Linguistic analysis of bynames of Romanian politicians shows the variety of linguistic resources and means used in the creation of a byname such as contraction, composition, derivation and abbreviation. A name given to someone by few people, once become public knowledge, is often used instead of the person’s formal name.

De altfel, a crescut industria IT.

The main form of divided government in Romania is that of cohabitation, and it has been experienced only twice, for a brief period of time: in 2007-2008 under Prime-Minister Călin Popescu Tăriceanu of the National Liberal Party and again, starting May 2012, under Prime Minister Victor Ponta of the Social Democratic Party.

  • Romanian Science in Free Fall
NEWS IN FOCUS shared. In April, hundreds of scientists took to the streets in protest, and more than 900 signed a petition addressed to Prime Minister Victor Ponta, demanding that the research budget and quality control be restored. The entire National Research Council, Romania’s main research- funding agency, resigned in protest (see Nature 496, 274–275; 2013). With no compromise from the government PHOTO CHIRITA/MEDIAFAX RAZVAN and the council seats still unfilled, Romanian science is adrift. Scientists are resigned to tread- ing water, in the hope that the tide will turn. Many of Romania’s best researchers left dur- ing the political chaos that followed the collapse of communism in 1989. But in 2011, the govern- ment passed a law designed to drive up stand- ards in education and science. Research and education minister Daniel Funeriu furnished the law with rules and regulations crafted to break through local power networks and ensure Research minister Mihnea Costoiu and his predecessor Ecaterina Andronescu have left scientists unhappy. that funding and academic positions would go to the best people — for example by requiring POLICY grant applications to be reviewed by foreign experts, and by instituting minimum qualifi- cations for job candidates (see Nature http:// doi.org/bp7nsg; 2011). At the same time, the Romanian science research budget was boosted by nearly half. But that government fell last year. Reversals to the reforms followed; many scientists blame Funeriu’s successor, Ecaterina Andronescu. in free fall Andronescu, who took the post last July, is a powerful figure in Romanian academic poli- tics.
