Pope: Death of Iraqi Archbishop 'Act of Inhuman Violence'
Pope: Death of Iraqi archbishop ‘act of inhuman violence’ VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI called the kidnapping and death of an Iraqi archbishop “an act of inhuman violence that offends the dignity of the human being and seriously harms the … coexistence among the beloved Iraqi people.” Chaldean Catholic Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho of Mosul, 65, was kidnapped Feb. 29 in an attack that left his driver and two bodyguards dead. The pope had made several public appeals for his release. Catholic leaders in Iraq said March 13 that they had recovered the archbishop’s body after the kidnappers told them where they had buried him. In a March 13 telegram to Cardinal Emmanuel-Karim Delly of Baghdad, patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church, Pope Benedict said that after being informed of “the tragic death” of the archbishop, whom he called a “zealous pastor,” he wanted to let Chaldean Catholics and all Christians in Iraq know that he is close to them. The pope also said he was praying that the Lord would show “his mercy so that this tragic event would serve to construct a future of peace in the martyred land of Iraq.” Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, said Pope Benedict was informed immediately of the recovery of Archbishop Rahho’s body. “We all had continued to hope and pray for his liberation,” Father Lombardi said. “Unfortunately, the most absurd and unjustified violence continues to weigh on the Iraqi people and particularly on the small Christian community, to whom the pope and all of us are particularly close in prayer and in solidarity at this moment of great pain.” Father Lombardi said the Vatican hoped “this tragic event” would lead to a greater commitment by all, particularly the international community, to work for peace in Iraq. -

The Polish Liberal Project in Jan Krzysztof Bielecki's Policy Statement
Roczniki Historii Socjologii ISSN 2084–2031 • Vol. X (2019) p p. 9 3 –1 1 0 The Polish Liberal Project in Jan Krzysztof Bielecki’s Policy Statement Sławomir Drelich Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń Jan Krzysztof Bielecki’s liberal project—introduction The office of the first non-communist prime minister in post-war Poland was held by Tadeusz Mazowiecki. Linked with Solidarity from its beginnings, Mazowiecki began his political career in the PAX Association, on whose behalf he was elected to the Sejm of the Polish People’s Republic. Mazowiecki’s biography perfectly exemplifies the struggle of the generation which grew up during occupation and in Stalinist times, with a political regime imposed on the Poles. Mazowiecki’s policy statement, delivered on 24 August 1989, undoubtedly marked a symbolic end of the communist era in Poland. Although the message of Mazowiecki’s statement suited the period of transition that Poland was about to undergo, it did not provide a specific vision of Poland’s new political system. 93 Sławomir Drelich Mazowiecki was succeeded by Jan Krzysztof Bielecki, a politician younger than him by a generation; Bielecki was born in the Polish People’s Republic, and was also associated with Solidarity’s expert committee. While this organization essentially provided Bielecki with the first experience in his social and political career, he is considered as one of the so called “Gdańsk liberals” (Knoch 2015: 111–114). This is why Bielecki’s policy statement differed significantly from the policy statement of his opponent, as it includes a more precisely-put idea of the new political, economic and social system. -

Zaufanie Do Polityków W Kwietniu
Warszawa, kwiecień 2013 BS/53/2013 ZAUFANIE DO POLITYKÓW W KWIETNIU Znak jakości przyznany CBOS przez Organizację Firm Badania Opinii i Rynku 11 stycznia 2013 roku Fundacja Centrum Badania Opinii Społecznej ul. Wykluczonemu ostatnio z SLD Ryszardowi Kaliszowi ufa 46% respondentów, nieco mniej osób (43%) deklaruje zaufanie do szefa polskiej dyplomacji. Kolejne miejsca na liście najczęściej obdarzanych zaufaniem polityków zajmują: lider SLD Leszek Miller (36%), wiceprzewodniczący PO Grzegorz Schetyna (35%), premier Donald Tusk i przewodniczący Solidarnej Polski Zbigniew Ziobro (po 34% deklaracji zaufania) oraz prezes PiS Jarosław Kaczyński (33%). Nieco rzadziej z zaufaniem respondentów spotykają się inni prominentni politycy rządzącej koalicji: minister sprawiedliwości Jarosław Gowin (31%), marszałek Sejmu Ewa Kopacz (30%) oraz szef PSL, wicepremier i minister gospodarki Janusz Piechociński (28%). Prawie jedna czwarta badanych ufa liderowi NSZZ „Solidarność” Piotrowi Dudzie (24%) i niemal tyle samo (23%) deklaruje zaufanie do szefa sejmowego zespołu ds. -
