YAC CSEB Trip to Winchester Dear YAC CSEB member, On Saturday 20th May YAC CSEB are running a trip to Winchester. Our guide for the day will be YAC leader, Alex Crisp, a Winchester resident and expert in the city’s history and archaeology. Winchester is one of the great historical and archaeological centres in the country and it promises to be an action-packed day. Amongst the many highlights of the day we will see the Westgate, the 12th century city wall gate built on the site of the Roman defences and the Great Hall of Winchester Castle, founded following the Norman Conquest and the scene of a great battle during the Anarchy when The Empress Matilda’s forces were besieged by those of King Stephen. We will also visit the Peninsular Barracks, built by Charles II to be the foundation of his new English Versailles and the grandest palatial complex in England and designed by Christopher Wren, it was used by the Army as a barracks until the 1980s. We will explore the high street which follows the street plan of the Saxon city of Winton-Caester and abounds in Tudor houses before visiting the 11th century Cathedral and taking in Winchester College. We will also explore the ruins of Wolvesey Castle, the 12th century palace of Bishop Henry of Blois, King Stephen’s brother, and receive the traditional Wayfairers’ Dole at the Hospital of St. Cross! The cost of the trip is £25 for YACs and friends and £30 for adults. (Please make cheques payable to “YAC CSEB”.) For this trip we will be travelling by train and will meet at Farnborough (Main) railway station at 9.30am in order to catch the 9.45 train to Winchester. (YAC leaders will be at the station from 9am onwards.) We will be returning on the 5.25pm service from Winchester which is scheduled to arrive into Farnborough at 5.59pm. Although we will do everything we can to ensure an on-time return, please bear in mind that punctuality of trains is outside of our control and we ask you to please be patient if we are a few minutes late. Please remember to bring a packed lunch, a waterproof and sturdy sensible shoes. Family members and friends are also welcome. Please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to come as this trip.
