The danger of cluster bombs According to an AFP report, the British forces were responsible for the use of over 2,000 cluster bombs during the Iraq conflict last year. Cluster bombs are weapons comprising a container which breaks apart to drop a shower of bomblets. Released from high altitudes, they can wander off their target. Some also do not explode immediately, but litter the ground with bomblets with the potential to go off years later.

An unexploded portion of a cluster bomb lies in the Seybiran area, some 40km south from nothern Iraq’s town of Arbil, on 8 May, 2003.

Razzaq Kazem al-Khafaj grieves over the bodies of his children in Hilla in the southern province of Babylon. Khafaj lost 15 members (including six children) of his family as his car was bombed by coalition helicopters while fleeing al-Haidariyeh towards Babylon.
