Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been acknowledged in the thesis. iii Abstract Ancient Krete perceived itself, and was perceived from outside, as rather different from the rest of Greece, particularly with respect to religion, social structure, and laws. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the bases for these perceptions and their accuracy. Krete’s self-perception is examined in the light of the account of Diodoros Siculus (Book 5, 64-80, allegedly based on Kretan sources), backed up by inscriptions and archaeology, while outside perceptions are derived mainly from other literary sources, including, inter alia, Homer, Strabo, Plato and Aristotle, Herodotos and Polybios; in both cases making reference also to the fragments and testimonia of ancient historians of Krete. While the main cult-epithets of Zeus on Krete – Diktaios, associated with pre-Greek inhabitants of eastern Krete, Idatas, associated with Dorian settlers, and Kretagenes, the symbol of the Hellenistic koinon - are almost unique to the island, those of Apollo are not, but there is good reason to believe that both Delphinios and Pythios originated on Krete, and evidence too that the Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphic and Dionysiac rites had much in common with early Kretan practice. The early institutionalization of pederasty, and the abduction of boys described by Ephoros, are unique to Krete, but the latter is distinct from rites of initiation to manhood, which continued later on Krete than elsewhere, and were associated with different gods. -

Arrive at the Corinth Canal for a brief stop and then continue on to the Acropolis of Corinth. Acro-corinth is the citadel of Corinth. It is situated to the southwest of the ancient city and rises to an elevation of 1883 ft. [574 m.]. Today it is surrounded by walls that are about 1.85 mi. [3 km.] long. The foundations of the fortifications are ancient—going back to the Hellenistic Period. The current walls were built and rebuilt by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks. Climb up and visit the fortress. Then proceed to the Ancient city of Corinth. It was to this megalopolis where the apostle Paul came and worked, established a thriving church, subsequently sending two of his epistles now part of the New Testament. Here, we see all of the sites associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Odeon, the Bema and Gallio’s Seat. CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by OpenstarTs Defining the Fiscal Role of Hellenistic Monarchy in Shaping Sale NOAH KAYE INTRODUCTION In the classical Greek world, in the context of the polis, the taxation of sale was the kind of banality that could attract the wit of Aristophanes.1 Yet it is precisely this sort of everyday occurrence about which most of our sources are silent. Indeed, if we can assume that, broadly speaking, the classical polis and its Hellenistic successor raised a tax on certain sales, a tax which they called an epônion or a hekatostê (1/100), we are ill informed about the details: the incidence of this tax and the mode of imposition.2 With the subjugation, and further, the integration of many poleis into Hellenistic kingdoms, as well as the kings’ foundation of many new cities organized along similar lines, fiscality became a domain in which relations of power were negotiated, and in which, for us, the smaller polity’s position in a larger, multiscalar state can be mapped out. Alana Koontz The Art and Artifacts Associated with the Cult of Dionysus Alana Koontz is a student at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee graduating with a degree in Art History and a certificate in Ancient Mediterranean Studies. The main focus of her studies has been ancient art, with specific attention to ancient architecture, statuary, and erotic symbolism in ancient art. Through various internships, volunteering and presentations, Alana has deepened her understanding of the art world, and hopes to do so more in the future. Alana hopes to continue to grad school and earn her Master’s Degree in Art History and Museum Studies, and eventually earn her PhD. Her goal is to work in a large museum as a curator of the ancient collections. Alana would like to thank the Religious Studies Student Organization for this fantastic experience, and appreciates them for letting her participate. Dionysus was the god of wine, art, vegetation and also widely worshipped as a fertility god. The cult of Dionysus worshipped him fondly with cultural festivities, wine-induced ritualistic dances, 1 intense and violent orgies, and secretive various depictions of drunken revelry. 2 He embodies the intoxicating portion of nature. Dionysus, in myth, was the last god to be accepted at Mt Olympus, and was known for having a mortal mother. He spent his adulthood teaching the cultivation of grapes, and wine-making. The worship began as a celebration of culture, with plays and processions, and progressed into a cult that was shrouded in mystery. Later in history, worshippers would perform their rituals in the cover of darkness, limiting the cult-practitioners to women, and were surrounded by myth that is sometimes interpreted as fact. -

Chapter 1 will offer a general introduction to the aims and methodology of this thesis. This chapter will also provide information on the geography, climate and natural resources of ancient Macedonia from prehistoric times. We will them continue with a concise social and cultural history of Macedonia from prehistory to the Roman conquest. This is important in order to achieve a good understanding of all these social and cultural processes that are directly or indirectly related with the exploitation of land and agriculture in Macedonia through time. Towards Determining the Chief Function of the Settlement of Borysthenes Jaroslav V. Domanskij & Konstantin K. Marcenko The site of Borysthenes, the earliest Greek settlement in the northern Black Sea area, is located on the island of Berezan’ situated at the mouth of the estuaries of the Dnieper and Bug rivers. The large-scale historical and archaeological research currently being carried out there has already yield- ed a number of significant discoveries. Of particular importance is some additional evidence recently obtained on the date of the origin of this colony, its outward appearance, culture, and historical development, as well as its relations with the barbarians of the hinterland.1 Yet the most important result of the excavations of recent years is the discovery of the sacred precinct at the settlement – the temenos with the remains of the Temple of Aphrodite from the second half of the 6th and beginning of the 5th century BC.2 It is possible that this fact may tip the balance, at least for now, in favour of the hypothesis about the polis status of Borysthenes. Nevertheless, it must be acknowledged that the very important question about the causes of and motivation behind the appearance of the first group of colonists in this remote region of the Greek oikoumene – i.e. the question about the basic function of early Borysthenes – has remained extremely con- troversial. In this respect, almost the entire conceivable spectrum of ideas and concepts co-exists comfortably in modern historiography. The question is, indeed, difficult to answer, not only with respect to Borysthenes itself but also to many other Greek settlements in the northern Black Sea area, and although there seem to be answers for the period of the mature and fully developed existence of the Greek cities, the problem becomes extremely complicated when focussing on the period of the formation and initial devel- opment of these cities. -

HESPERIA 68.2, I999 A $HIELD MONUMEN F ROM VE RIA AN T CHRONO LOY OF /vACEDON IAN $HIElDI TYPES In the summer of 1978 I noticed a sculpture in relief of shields and corse- lets on a marble wall situated on a main street of the ancient city of Dion in Macedonia; Demetrios Pantermalis, the archaeologist in charge of the excavations,told me of a series of blocks with carved shields in Veria in the sculpture garden of the Archaeological Museum and in a tower of the old city wall.1 The sculptures appear to have been part of the same ancient monument, and I observed that traditional Greek hoplite shields with off- set rims about 95 cm in diameter appearedside by side with rimless shields of relatively flat curvature about 70 cm in diameter.2To my knowledge, this combination of both types of shields on the same structure is unique in the archaeological remains of Macedonia. The smaller shields resemble in size and shape the shields employed by the Macedonian phalanx, as described by Asclepiodotus (Tactics5.1). They were smaller than the tra- ditional Greek hoplite type and, instead of being fitted on the inside with 1. Sobre este último «género», repleto de elemen- tos etiológicos y largas digresiones, se aportan y se comparan datos importantes mediante dos métodos conocidos: la Quellensforchung y la comparación entre seguidores de la escuela de Calímaco y los denominados Telquines. Se analizan epigramas concretos, epilios de Teócrito, Mosco, la Hécale de Calímaco, epilios de Trifiodoro, Hedilo, Museo, Euforión, Partenio, Poliano, así como de Cornelio Galo y Cinna. Finalmente, se estudia la dicotomía «agua»/«vino» como símbolos de inspiración y se ofrece una posible clave para focalizar el paso de dicha contraposición desde la literatura helenística griega a la romana. Abstract This paper describes some highly important aspects than configure, from Aminachus of Colofos to the latest Hellenistic and Roman poetic pieces, the contraposition of the concepts e[po~ and ejpuvllion. About this latter ‘genre’, filled with etiological and disgressive elements, data are contrasted according to two well known methods: Quellensforchung and comparison between Callimachus’ followers and Telquines. Specific epigrams are reviewed, also some epic poems by Theocritus, Moscos, the Hecale by Callimachus, epic poems by Trifiodorus, Hedilus, Museus, Euforius, Partenius, Polianus, Cornelius, Galius, and Cinnas. Finally, dichotomous elements like ‘water’/‘wine’ are studied as symbols for inspiration. -

Housman (1859–1936) Born in Worcestershire in 1859, Alfred Edward Housman was a gifted classical scholar and poet. After studying in Oxford, Housman worked for ten years as a clerk, while publishing and writing scholarly articles on Horace, Propertius, Ovid, Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles. He gradually acquired such a high reputation that in 1892 he returned to the academic world as Professor of Classics at University College London (1892–1911) and then as Kennedy Professor of Latin at Trinity College, Cambridge (1911–1936). Housman Lectures at UCL The Department of Greek and Latin at University College London organizes regular Housman Lectures, named after its illustrious former colleague (with support from UCL Alumni). Housman Lectures, delivered by a scholar of international distinction, originally took place every second year and now happen every year, alternating between Greek and Roman topics (Greek lectures being funded by the A.G. Leventis Foundation). The fifth Housman lecture, which was given by Professor Eric Csapo (Professor of Classics, University of Sydney) on 20 February 2013, is here reproduced with minor adjustments.
