PRE FA CE There is nothing absolute about the existence of a species. Every species epithet published represents an opinion held by its author, and is validated or invalidated by the opinions of other authors and the opinions of stilllater authors concerning the validity of the opinions of their pred­ ecessors. In preparing this check list, your editors were faced with the fact that in many cases the exact status of a species, subspecies or variety had not been determined by a consensus of expert opinions. An excellent statement of the problem is contained in "Classification of Eupogon Irises," L. F.Randolph and G. H.M. Lawrence, published in the AIS Bulletin No.148, January 1958, p. 9, reprinted here with the kind permission of the authors and of AIS. "It is with definite reservations concerning their taxonomic status that various species are listed as distinct entities in this classification rather than being considered as synonyms of oth­ er species. Most species of the Subsection Iris are sufficiently well known to place them with assurance in the appropriate Series as they are here defined; but their evaluation as good species is often hampered by inadequate descriptions, insufficient herbarium material, or lack of fa­ miliarity with the range of variability exhibited by the plants in their native habitats. Bearded iris species as a group are extremely variable and much of this variability is heritable as shown by their breeding behavior, by differences among clones grown side by side in cultivation, and by the prevalence in wild populations of variation in flower color, form of spathes, leaf shape, and other traits not easily influenced by environment. Conclusions based on observations of a few clones or a few her barium specimens can be and often are misleading. Until a thorough re­ vision of the genus Iris is undertaken at the species level the status of many species will remain in doubt." We could not make definitive judgments ourselves without stopping to get degrees in tax­ onomy, making original collections and conducting a thorough study of all material in European herbaria. On the other hand, some judgments were unavoidable; in making them, we have gath­ ,. ered the available information, and then done the best we could. Clones are listed under the preferred species, subspecies or variety, with references elsewhere to that listing. Where we have indicated disagreement among the authorities, readers should remember that later judg­ ments are more likely to be correct-particularly when based on chromosome counts. Dykes, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for his early monumental work on the species, depended largely on other collectors' herbarium specimens and plants grown in a few English gardens {he rarely visited the sites himself), and he did not have the benefit of chromosome counts nor of modern cytological techniques. There can be no doubt that he would have been the first to re­ joice over these present-day sources of information and the last to say that newer decisions on taxonomy should be set aside simply because "they conflict with Dykes." In compiling this list the editors have received generous assistance from a large number of iris fanciers. First and foremost, our gratitude goes to L. F. {Fitz) Randolph, whose collecting and distributing of the species plants made this volume necessary, and to Mrs Randolph, who kept the records ·Of these collections and made them available to us; their professional advice and supervision during the tedious preparation of the data herein assembled has preserved us, we hope, from serious blundering in treatment of our confused and confusing assortment of bearded species. This was brought home to members of the Northeast Median Group in 1956 when Dr Randolph brought to a meeting several large flats filled with blooming plants of the previously unfamiliar species which he had collected in 1954. In the flats, with various clones of l. attica and a number of other species, were seven clones of l_. pseudopumila, covering the range of variation of this very polymorphic species. Luckily for us Dr Irene van de Water was present, for while we mostly stood gasping or pleading for pollen, Irene insisted that we must forthwith make detailed descriptions of the clones.

For the purpose of the study, 97 clonal plants of the rhizomatous herb I. variegata that experienced different light conditions in their two native habitats were selected: one along the top and slope of sand dunes and one in woodland understories. Two fully expanded leaves that had developed during spring, summer and fall in two consecutive years were sampled from each of these clones. Six leaf traits affecting the photosynthetic rate of a plant − morphological (specific leaf area), anatomical (stomatal density) and physiological (total chlorophyll concentration, chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b ratio, carotenoid concentration, chlorophyll a/carotenoid ratio) exhibited significant plastic responses in the two different light habitats. To test whether these traits differ between exposed and shaded habitats as well as during different vegetation periods, we used the repeated model analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results of the repeated ANOVA revealed statistically significant effects of year, habitat and period of vegetation season. I. spuria L. subsp. musulmanica (Fomin) Takht., is one of the the 10 species of Limniris section and grows wildly in Eastern Anatolia. Plant material was collected from Van-Erciş road. Besides the morphological and anatomical investigation; oil content and methyl esters of fatty acids of the seed oils were examined in this study for the first time. Fatty Acid methyl esters were prepared according to the method of Metcalfe et al. (13) from the oil obtained by the Soxhelet apparatus with n-hexane. Analysis of the methyl esters have been carried out with GC-MS. Myristic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Stearic Acid, Oleic and Arachidic Acid were determined as the main fatty acids in the oil. Also, the paper provides information about the hayfields floral richness, a great scientific value for Romania and Europe. The study of the flora was carried out in several stages: 2005-2008, 2013, 2017-2018. In the studied area, 397 taxa were identified, distributed in 82 families with therapeutic potential, represented by 164 medical taxa, 37 of them being in the European Pharmacopoeia 8.5. The study reveals that most plants contain: volatile oils (13.41%), tannins (12.19%), flavonoids (9.75%), mucilages (8.53%) etc. This plants can be used in the treatment of various human disorders: disorders of the digestive system, respiratory system, skin disorders, muscular and skeletal systems, genitourinary system, in gynaecological disorders, cardiovascular, and central nervous sistem disorders. In the study plants protected by law at European and national level were identified: Echium maculatum, Cephalaria radiata, Crambe tataria, Narcissus poeticus ssp. radiiflorus, Salvia nutans, Iris aphylla, Orchis morio, Orchis tridentata, Adonis vernalis, Dictamnus albus, Hammarbya paludosa etc. Keywords: Fărăgău, medicinal plants, human disease, Mureş County 1.

Counterpoised to these flashy dandies we are offering an assortment of choice muscari whose quiet charm, softer colours and Tulipa vvedenskyi Tecophilaea cyanocrocus Violacea persistent flowering make them no less effective in the winter and spring garden. WILSON Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, 1500 North College Avenue, Claremont, California 91711-3157, USA (carol. wilson@ cgu. edu) ABSTRACT Subgeneric groups have been circumscribed in Iris based on a small number of morphological characters. Recent DNA sequence data has indicated that several of the subgenera, sections, and series that have previously been delineated are paraphyletic or polyphyletic. The evolution of characters that have traditionally been used to distinguish sub generic and sectional groups within Iris was investigated by mapping these characters on a phylogenetic tree based on matK sequence data. Results indicate that rhizomes are pleisomorphic for the genus and that three bulb types have arisen independently. My analysis shows that sepal beards, sepal crests, and seed arils show extensive homoplasy. Most of the homoplasy seen is associated with the circumscription of polyphyletic subgeneric groups such as the beardless subgenus Limniris. Some additional homoplasy is due to diversity within supported clades or the historical use of a single character in circumscribing more than one subgeneric group.

Native to rocky areas of northern Italy and the Eastern Mediterranean (including Dalmatia, a province of Croatia, hence one of the common names), it was one of the primary species used in the development of the tall bearded iris. Its dried root (along with other species of Iris) is a source of orris root powder that was used medicinally or for its supposed magical and alchemical properties in medieval times, as well as a per- fume and potpourri fi xative for many centuries. It may take several years of drying for the root to fully develop its fragrance. Orris oil, derived from the fresh root, is used as a fl avoring Iris pallida ‘Aurea-variegata’ in bud in soft drinks, candies and chewing gum. The low clumps of sword-like leaves remain nearly evergreen in mild winter climates, but in Iris pallida ‘Argentea Variegata’ at cold areas the plant dies back to the ground like RHS Garden Wisley in England. other irises do. The qualitative morphological features of the Alpine-Dinaric and cultivated populations, as well as of the herbarium specimens of the genus Iris, series Pallidae, were investigated. The height of the plant, leaves, inflorescence, flowers (spathe, perigonium, androecium, gynoecium), fruits and seeds were analysed. It was established that the morphological features analysed did not show pheno- typic plasticity. The following qualitative morphological features have possible diagnostic signifi- cance: intensity of the leaf vein, spathe colour, perigonium colour, and pollen and seed morphol- ogy. Of no diagnostic use are ratio of filament and anther lengths (individual variability), and size and form of the fruits (intrapopulation variability). Key words: genus Iris L., series Pallidae (A.
