Ara tawhito (trails), ran through these catchments, bringing whānau into the southern lakes and rivers on their seasonal pursuit of resources. Today the rivers are used for recreation, and are valued for their landscape qualities and the species residing in them. -

Nick's grandfather was German but was o educated in England before coming to New Zealand. o » Their first son, Nicholas Graham "Tiny" was born the year » they were married. Another child did not follow until 1943. -I , around home and relished the responsibility. She Mouru had had her hopes pinned on a dainty little girl 2S attended Raetihi School and later was a boarder at but instead she gave birth to a 13lb 40z boy called Gary " James. Turakina Maori Girls' College in Marton. She learnt the teachings of both the Ratana and Methodist churches. Mouru went to her family's tlU island Pikomamaku In 1944 Ruruhira took up a position at Te Rahui nui almost every season of her life. She excelled at Wahine Methodist Hostel for Maori girls in Hamilton cooking - the priest at her funeral remarked that "she founded by Princess Te Puea Herangi. -

Holland Institute of Natural Resources, massey University, Private Bag 11-222, Palmerston North, New Zealand Abstract Using GPS technology, we tracked 3 juvenile northern royal albatrosses (Diomedea sanfordi) as they fledged from Taiaroa Head, Otago Peninsula, New Zealand. All birds flew north along the east coast of New Zealand before undertaking a trans-Pacific easterly migration to Chile. during their 8500 km migration, the maximum daily distance and speed reached were 1047 km and 110 km h-1, respectively, and the maximum altitude was 38 m a.s.l. Upon leaving New Zealand waters, the 3 albatrosses took between 16 to 34 days to reach the coast of Chile where they remained between 23°S and 58°S. The tracked albatrosses generally kept to within 100 km of the coast where the depth of water varied between 1000 and 2000 m. Overall, the tracked albatrosses on the Chilean coast spent 72% of the time resting on the water, primarily between 1800 h and 2400 h local time. Fix success rate of the GPS technology ranged from 56% to 85%. The use of solar charging and a long attachment period allowed birds to be followed continuously for 134 to 362 days. Traditional Knowledge Systems and Crops: Case Studies on the Introduction of Kūmara (Ipomoea batatas) and Taewa Māori (Solanum tuberosum) to Aotearoa/New Zealand A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of AgriScience in Horticultural Science at Massey University, Manawatū, New Zealand Rodrigo Estrada de la Cerda 2015 Kūmara and Taewa Māori, Ōhakea, New Zealand i Abstract Kūmara (Ipomoea batatas) and taewa Māori, or Māori potato (Solanum tuberosum), are arguably the most important Māori traditional crops. Over many centuries, Māori have developed a very intimate relationship to kūmara, and later with taewa, in order to ensure the survival of their people. There are extensive examples of traditional knowledge aligned to kūmara and taewa that strengthen the relationship to the people and acknowledge that relationship as central to the human and crop dispersal from different locations, eventually to Aotearoa / New Zealand. This project looked at the diverse knowledge systems that exist relative to the relationship of Māori to these two food crops; kūmara and taewa. A mixed methodology was applied and information gained from diverse sources including scientific publications, literature in Spanish and English, and Andean, Pacific and Māori traditional knowledge. The evidence on the introduction of kūmara to Aotearoa/New Zealand by Māori is indisputable. Mātauranga Māori confirms the association of kūmara as important cargo for the tribes involved, even detailing the purpose for some of the voyages. -

Auckland Regional Office of Archives New Zealand
A supplementary finding-aid to the archives relating to Maori Schools held in the Auckland Regional Office of Archives New Zealand MAORI SCHOOL RECORDS, 1879-1969 Archives New Zealand Auckland holds records relating to approximately 449 Maori Schools, which were transferred by the Department of Education. These schools cover the whole of New Zealand. In 1969 the Maori Schools were integrated into the State System. Since then some of the former Maori schools have transferred their records to Archives New Zealand Auckland. Building and Site Files (series 1001) For most schools we hold a Building and Site file. These usually give information on: • the acquisition of land, specifications for the school or teacher’s residence, sometimes a plan. • letters and petitions to the Education Department requesting a school, providing lists of families’ names and ages of children in the local community who would attend a school. (Sometimes the school was never built, or it was some years before the Department agreed to the establishment of a school in the area). The files may also contain other information such as: • initial Inspector’s reports on the pupils and the teacher, and standard of buildings and grounds; • correspondence from the teachers, Education Department and members of the school committee or community; • pre-1920 lists of students’ names may be included. There are no Building and Site files for Church/private Maori schools as those organisations usually erected, paid for and maintained the buildings themselves. Admission Registers (series 1004) provide details such as: - Name of pupil - Date enrolled - Date of birth - Name of parent or guardian - Address - Previous school attended - Years/classes attended - Last date of attendance - Next school or destination Attendance Returns (series 1001 and 1006) provide: - Name of pupil - Age in years and months - Sometimes number of days attended at time of Return Log Books (series 1003) Written by the Head Teacher/Sole Teacher this daily diary includes important events and various activities held at the school. -

I was born at Otaki on 29 October 1960, I was brought up there. My father is Rikihana Te Rei Carkeek and my mother is Hemaima Te Hiwi Carkeek. I am the second youngest of their fourteen children. I am of Ngati Toa and Ngati Raukawa descent, among others. 2 I reside in Otaki today. Although I am not a resident in Te Tau Ihu I have always been aware that our family had roots there through our Maori ancestry. 3 I am self-employed and contract my administrative and teaching skills for our iwi developments. I presently have a working relationship with Te Runanga o Raukawa Inc and the Raukawa Marae Information and Support Service. -

[499] Mummification Among the Maoris. Following recent newspaper discussions, Mr. H. D. Skinner sends the following extract from a private letter from Mr. George Graham, 26th July, 1935: “I have myself seen (in situ) human bodies in the urupā (burying-place) in a perfectly preserved condition, in a sitting posture, as originally arranged after death; probably not more than a century or so in age (Kaipara, Arawa, and Kawhia). I am sure mummifying was not a Maori art, the necessary processes would be derogatory from the Maori point of view. “The nearest approach to mummification in New Zealand I ever heard of was connected with the death of Rangitihi (Arawa ancestor of Ngatirangitihi). His body was encased or folded in eight (waru) wrappings (pu), and after some years of retention for wailing over, - 190 at last consigned to the urupā. Hence the pepeha (motto) of that clan: 1. E waru nga pu-manawa a Rangitihi or 2. Rangitihi pu-manawa waru i.e.— 1. Eight were/are the bowel-bindings of Rangitihi. 2. Rangitihi (of the) eight bowel-bindings. “Why Rangitihi was thus provided for after his death is another story—but it seems to have been a historical incident—though unique of its kind. Of course there is another alleged interpretation of the term pumanawa. “The bodies I saw at a cavern urupā at Kaipara (1883 about) were all sitting around the sides of a spacious cavern vault, clothed and bedecked with feather plumes, and the tattooing (all were men) as clear and perfect as can possibly be imagined.
