In 1912 there was no state of Israel, there were no universities in the Middle East, and there was no infrastructure. The name “Shechtmanite” embodied the risk of humiliation if the material would indeed turn out to be a kind of “twinning,” as Shechtman’s opponents claimed. Revealing a new kind of crystalline order, Shechtman demonstrated a clear diffraction pattern with a fivefold symmetry. The pattern was recorded from an aluminum-manganese (Al-Mn) alloy which had been rapidly cooled after melting. Shechtman’s discovery was initially viewed with skepticism. “I feared for my scientific and academic career,” ©H. Frohman was charged with helping Intel establish a small chip design center in Haifa, which at the time, was Intel’s first outside the U.S. The rest, as the cliché goes, is history. In a little over a generation, the Israeli semiconductor industry has grown to now employ more than 20,000; annual revenues are about US $5 billion. Intel, for instance, now has about 9,900 employees in Israel and is planning to invest almost $6 billion in upgrading its Kiryat Gat fab facility. In fact, since 1974, Intel has invested about $10.8 billion in the Israeli semiconductor industry. “We’ve exported goods worth $35 billion most from our production centers in Kiryat Gat and Jerusalem,” said Intel VP and Intel Israel CEO Maxine Fassberg. Sol Gradman is editor of TapeOut, a publication covering the semiconductor industry, and also chairs ChipEx, the country’s largest annual semiconductor/microelectronics conference. Gradman said Israel’s semiconductor industry today comprises three types of companies – fabless, multinational design centers, and fabs.

This is true also for countries that are rich in natural resources, but do not use them wisely. People that live in countries that enjoy high standard of living are industrious and their countries industrial. The basic reason of this division is technological entrepreneurship nourished by free market economy. Technologically entrepreneurial people make the difference. So, is there hope for everybody on the globe to improve their lives? Can technological entrepreneurship be motivated and taught so that generations of determined entrepreneurs will build up thriving economies? The clear answer to both questions is yes, but the process will take time and dedication. It all starts with education in general and scientific- technical education in particular. There is also a way to expedite the process – start with the already educated engineers and scientists. These are the first candidates for entrepreneurial endeavors. They can do it, but need motivation, continuous instruction and encouraging economic environment until they create successful start-ups and serve as role models for others. The name of the game is motivation.

Its flickering black-and-white images show a slender woman with a stylish be- ret perched on the side of her head, self-consciously posing in front of Berlin’s most famous sites. These are the earliest moving images of Luba Hamied, born Liubov Derczanska, whom her mother nicknamed Hinde (the Indian) and whom her husband called ‘a modern Russian woman’. The camera follows her under the lush trees of the Lustgarten, between the colonnades of the Alte Museum and onto the steps of Haus Vaterland, the famous pleasure palace on Potsdamer Platz. Her husband Khwaja Abdul Hamied is at her side. He is a clean-shaven young Indian gentleman with a beaming face; he is dressed in a suit and tie and has a large Borsalino hat on his head. We see him asking direc- tions from a policeman in the centre of Potsdamer Platz, where he buys his wife a bouquet of flowers from a street vendor in front of the Tietz department store. Election posters are fluttering from balconies all around them. This elec- tion will presage Hitler’s rise to power and will be the last German election until the Nazi regime is defeated. The political atmosphere does not, however, seem to touch the couple. They have just returned from Bombay to revisit the city of their love and they look blissfully happy.

    Western Europe Great Britain Domestic Affairs A HE POLITICAL WORLD was startled by the news of Prime Minister Harold Wilson's resignation in March 1976. He was succeeded by former Foreign Secretary James Callaghan, elected by the parliamentary Labour party after three ballots. The precarious position of the government was emphasized both in March, when three by-elections showed a fall in Labour votes and a rise in C^ nservative —though no party lost a seat it had previously held; and in April, when the resignation of one Labour Member of Parliament reduced the party's voting strength to 314, as compared with 316 for all other parties. In February 1975 Margaret Thatcher had replaced Edward Heath as leader of the Conservative party. In June of that year, in a 64.5 per cent turnout, 67.2 per cent of those who went to the polls voted for the United Kingdom to stay in the European Economic Community (EEC). On the economic front significant changes of policy took place. Foremost among these were the imposition in July of a limit of £6 per week on pay rises and the introduction of more food and government housing subsidies. These measures were taken to combat a rapidly rising rate of inflation, which in May was running at 30 per cent per annum. In this way the Labour party, which had won power in 1974 by asserting the principle of free collective bargaining, reverted to a policy of compulsory wage controls after only a year. There were still doubts whether the Trades Union Congress would agree to the change; it did so at its annual conference in September by a majority of two to one.

Gevaryahu Printed in Jerusalem Alon Printing 02-5388938 Editor’s Introduction Every Shabbat morning, upon entering Lower Merion Synagogue, an Orthodox congregation on the outskirts of the city of Philadelphia, I began by exchanging greetings with the late Lt. Colonel Eliyahu Yekutiel Shwartz. He used to give me news clippings and booklets which, in his opinion, would enhance my knowledge. I, in turn, would express my personal views on current events, especially related to our shared birthplace, Jerusalem. Throughout the years we had an unwritten agreement; Eliyahu would have someone at the Israeli Consulate of Philadelphia fax the latest news in Hebrew to my office (Eliyahu had no fax machine at the time), and I would deliver the weekly accumulation of faxes to his house on Friday afternoons before Shabbat. This arrangement lasted for years. Eliyahu read the news, and distributed the material he thought was important to other Israelis and especially to our mutual friend Dr. Michael Toaff. We all had an inherent need to know exactly what was happening in Israel. Often, during my frequent visits to Israel, I found that I was more current on happenings in Israel than the local Israelis.
