Olympique de Marseille are in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since becoming the tournament's inaugural winners in 1993. To progress further they have to get the better of an FC Bayern München side who have the additional incentive of trying to reach a final which is to be staged at their home stadium. • It is the first meeting between the teams and the fourth time in six seasons that the Bavarian club have reached this stage. In 2009/10, their last appearance in the last eight, they beat Manchester United FC on away goals after the aggregate scores were tied at 4-4. Bayern won 2-1 at home and lost 3-2 away. Match background • Two home defeats in the group stage could not prevent OM making progress to the knockout rounds but they did serve to cast their home record in Europe's elite club competition in an even worse light. Before the round of 16 tie with FC Internazionale Milano they had suffered nine defeats in their last 18 fixtures at Stade Vélodrome, in the competition proper, with only six victories. • They improved that statistic with a 1-0 win against the 2010 champions, André Ayew settling a tight contest deep into added time with a header from a corner. • In the return substitute Brandão struck, again in stoppage time, to make the score at San Siro 1-1. There was still time for Giampaolo Pazzini to give Inter victory on the night with a penalty after Marseille goalkeeper had been sent off, but the French team triumphed on away goals. • Bayern had won six of their previous nine UEFA Champions League away games before going down 1-0 at FC Basel 1893 in the round of 16 first leg. They overturned that deficit with a 7-0 triumph in the return, setting a new record for margin of victory in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds. • Marseille also faced German opponents in the group stage, beating Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Stade Vélodrome and 3-2 away on matchday six to secure their place in the knockout rounds. Loïc Rémy and André Ayew scored in both games, Marseille coming from 2-0 down in Germany when substitute Mathieu Valbuena's superb 87th-minute winner sent them into the last 16. • Those were Marseille's first contests with a German team since the 1998/99 UEFA Cup when, in a second round tie against SV Werder Bremen, they followed a 1-1 away draw with a 3-2 win at home. Three other home fixtures have produced two wins and a defeat, the reverse coming against FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the 1975/76 UEFA Cup first round when a 1-0 home loss completed a 4-0 aggregate defeat. • Marseille have won their last two knockout ties with German opponents having lost the two before that. In ten games they have won five and lost three. • Marseille's other two home games in Group F, against Arsenal FC and Olympiacos FC, both ended in 1-0 reverses. • Two years ago Bayern were paired with Olympique Lyonnais in the semi-finals, Arjen Robben scoring the only goal in Munich in a game in which Franck Ribéry was sent off before Ivica Olić's second-leg hat-trick set up a final against Inter, the German club losing 2-0 in Madrid. • That season Bayern also faced an FC Girondins de Bordeaux side, who included Alou Diarra, in the group stage, losing 2-1 away and 2-0 at home. • Bayern's away record against Ligue 1 opposition is W4 D3 L6. • They have won three out of four two-legged contests with French sides, including the 1995/96 UEFA Cup final against Bordeaux. Bayern also recorded their third European Cup final victory by beating AS Saint-Étienne 1-0 in 1976, Franz Roth the scorer. • Their away games in Group A produced a 2-0 win at Villarreal CF, a 1-1 draw at SSC Napoli and a 2-0 defeat at Manchester City FC when their place as section winners was already guaranteed. Team ties • Didier Deschamps was captain of the Marseille side who lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in Munich's Olympiastadion on 26 May 1993 after a 1-0 victory against AC Milan. • Deschamps' last European game as a player came against Bayern in the 2001 UEFA Champions League final. They beat his Valencia CF side 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at San Siro. • As a Juventus player, Deschamps ended up on the losing side when Jupp Heynckes' Real Madrid CF won the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League final 1-0 at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Boateng, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Müller and Kroos all played for the winning team. • Tymoshchuk scored Ukraine's goal in a 4-1 defeat by France in Donetsk in July 2011 with Mandanda, Loïc Rémy and Ribéry all on the winning side. • Boateng and Olić's Hamburger SV were 3-0 winners against a Stade Rennais FC team which included Rod Fanni in the 2007/08 UEFA Europa League group stage. • Robben struck his first UEFA Champions League goal for PSV Eindhoven against AJ Auxerre in a 3-0 home win on 30 October 2002. He also scored in the Netherlands' 4-1 defeat of France at UEFA EURO 2008 in which Mandanda was an unused substitute. • At the 2010 World Cup group stage, Nicolas N'Koulou and Stéphane Mbia were in the Cameroon side beaten 2-1 in the group stage by the Netherlands in Cape Town, Robben coming on as a substitute. • In November 2011, France and Belgium played out a 0-0 draw in a friendly match in Paris. Rémy and Ribéry featured for France while Van Buyten started for the visitors.

His Tenerife side then reached 1996/97 UEFA Cup semi-finals, earning Heynckes a season as Madrid coach; led Los Merengues to UEFA Champions League glory in 1997/98 but left that summer. • Following a lean spell, stepped in as caretaker manager at Bayern in April 2009 following Jürgen Klinsmann's dismissal; replaced Bruno Labbadia as Leverkusen coach the same summer, beginning with German record run of 24 unbeaten Bundesliga games. UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FC Bayern München and Chelsea FC in this season's round of 16, although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home. • Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • In all, 19 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three round of 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • Eleven ties have gone to penalties, including the game between APOEL FC and Olympique Lyonnais in the 2011/12 round of 16. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie. • FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2012/12 round of 16 is the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match. • The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Real Madrid CF's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in 1957/58. • Manchester United FC's 7-1 win against AS Roma in 2006/07 is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match. FC Barcelona have twice won 5-1, against Chelsea FC after extra time (1999/2000) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2010/11), while there have been four 4-0 victories, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Tottenham Hotspur FC last season. • Chelsea FC-Liverpool FC in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United FC lost the 2011 final in London. Five teams won Champion Clubs' Cup finals on home soil: Real Madrid CF (1957), FC Internazionale Milano (1965), Manchester United FC (1968), AFC Ajax (1972) and Liverpool FC (1978), while Stade de Reims Champagne (1956), AS Roma (1984) and FC Barcelona (1986) all lost finals in their own country. UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a UEFA Champions League match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight this season. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having been aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six of the 2007/08 edition. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 148 days, in Manchester United's 2-0 win at FC Schalke 04 on 26 April 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
