MAASAI WILDERNESS CONSERVATION TRUST

IMPACT REPORT 20 18 Dear MWCT supporter,

F O U N D E R S’ We have the pleasure to share with you the truly remarkable achievements for 2018. Let us get rid of the bad news first: we did lose 4 this year. Three were poisoned M E S S A G E by the usual culprit who was released by the judicial system, and one was speared. The speared was because of severe predation and this incident was practically unavoid- able. The poisoning is unacceptable, but until we engage prosecutors and judges prop- erly, we will still face this deadly challenge. We are working on it… CONSERVATION Security & Protection What is encouraging is the positive, profound and meaningful engagement of the whole Ranger Patrol AVERAGE community, who understand how their natural resources, from wildlife to forests, are Incidents & Conflict 547.5 MM producing services and income. This attitude is the real reason of the successes I am celebrating with you: Wildlife Monitoring - zero of (in Africa, 100 are killed daily) Species Sighting - increased lion population Lion Monitoring “If you feel something that is - zero fires in the , thanks to the REDD+ rangers & community involvement Simba Scouts TOTAL driving you, you shouldn’t listen to the grown up who tells you ‘grow - better grazing management Camera Trap Results 828.7 MM up stop dreaming’ - I didn’t and - overall increased wildlife population # that desire to follow my passion has Predator Protection 55% led to something much bigger than - restoration of grassland, in partnership with JustDiggit *2017 myself... “ Wildlife Pays - Luca Belpietro, TEDxTalk We also celebrate the sales of our carbon credits to Tiffany&Co (at $12/credit), as well as a very good performance from both the education and health programmes; last but Aerial Count not least, we celebrate Muterian Ntanin (MWCT Head Rangers Commander) being Collaborations & Events Chyulu Hills REDD+ Carbon Project appointed the East African GRAA (Game Rangers Association of Africa) Representative R A I N F A L L serving on their Africa Committee.

A milestone achievement which is really extraordinary is having secured, by partnering HEALTH Outreaches with Rosey Aventures and Le Rosey Foundation, the Olpusare spring. In late December Immunization we signed a 30-year contract to secure 450 acres of critical wetland. Olpusare is where Reproductive Health Greta Garbo, Hemingway, Ruark, Holden and others were camping in the 1950s. The Public Health spring was home to rhinos, hippos, elephants and wild dogs, to mention just a few iconic Ante Natal Care species. It will be protected for the next generation, through a student camp. We will Susan Komen ecologically and botanically restore it. We will reintroduce the crocodile. Hippos will nat- urally come back. It took Edward, Samson and Luca more than 10 years, but we did it! The community is equally ecstatic. They know this choice gives them a better future. LIVELIHOODS A special thanks goes to the visionary educator Philippe Gudin, who decided to create Grass Seed Banks/Beading/Anti-FGM the conservancy (with just a little bit of convincing by Luca…). Hippo Rollers PASSIONATELY WORKING TO PROVE THAT NURTURING WILDLIFE The whole MWCT team is grateful to our donors, particularly to the Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation, for their amazing support.
