Young, 2014 ii Abstract This dissertation reshapes our understanding of the earliest years of American psychology by documenting the discipline’s methodological plurality from its very inception. In tracing the use of questionnaires over the first half century of the discipline’s existence as a science, I argue that a natural historical orientation, wherein collection, analysis, and categorization are central to the scientific enterprise, has been a persistent facet of the field. Manifested in a recurrent interest in collecting information on mental life, this natural historical perspective facilitated a moral economy of data, wherein the discipline’s affect-laden norms and values sanctified the objects and practices of mass data collection. This in turn lent itself to the adoption of statistical analyses as a central component of psychological science. Although, at first glance, falling outside of the bounds of the mechanically objective practices that characterized the new psychology’s laboratory endeavours, with their use of standardized instrumentation, projects with this orientation adhered to this form of objectivity in their own way. Seeking precise accounts of mental life, including information on its physical correlates, these enterprises engaged the public in collection practices in the field. Taking up subjects with widespread interest outside of purely scientific spheres – including child study, psychical matters, and dreaming – questionnaire projects had broad appeal. Undertakings with less popular allure deliberately and necessarily confined themselves to more restricted university populations. Issues of social relevance remained mainstays of this kind of research, but by the 1920s the public’s relation to questionnaire research shifted so that they were no longer active participants in collecting activities. Instead, questionnaires were circulated in more restricted circumstances and their findings served as the basis for broad claims about the state of the public’s mind. To do so effectively, I argue, practices of collecting with questionnaires shifted from thick to thin iii description; no longer were rich descriptive accounts of mental life the aim of these endeavours. Rather, increasingly restricted ranges of information were accumulated, a process that culminated in the development of numerical Likert scales and the use of more sophisticated statistical analyses. Regular components of contemporary psychological research, they have also moved beyond scientific spheres to feature regularly in our everyday lives. Whether used to assess perfectionism or attitudes toward political candidates, these instruments now pervade the many domains of our existence. How is it that the questionnaire is now our preferred means of gathering information on any and everything? When and why did psychology adopt this mode of inquiry? What shape did early research with the method take? And what are the intricacies of practice that attended the use of this method? Jeanne Marecek Since its early days the field of psychology has issued pronouncements about women and set out prescriptions for their mental health and proper conduct. Women in the discipline often dissented from the pronouncements and prescrip­ tions of mainstream psychology, but for much of psychology’s one hundred- year history women’s voices were few and far between. The past quarter of a century has witnessed a dramatic increase in the overall number of women in psychology. Moreover, many women, committed to feminism in their personal lives, have been committed to feminist ideals in their work as researchers, thera­ pists, and teachers as well. Two organizations, one within the main professional association (the Division of the Psychology of Women of the American Psycho­ logical Association, established in 1973) and one outside (the Association for Women in Psychology, established in 1969), exist, providing a locus of colle- giality and institutional support for feminist scholarship and activism (Mednick and Urbanski 1991; Tiefer 1991).

Rideout, Universityof Oklahoma On Early Applications of Psychology in Music Education Granville Stanley Hall (1842-1924) received the first doctoral degree in psychology in the United States (from Harvard, in 1878). After a two- year sojourn to Europe, where he studied the educational system of Germany, Hall returned to America where, in 1881, he was hired by Charles Elliott, president of Harvard University, to deliver a series of lectures on the state of education in Germany. He gave these lectures for teachers in the Boston environs (Ross, 1974, p. 133). In 1882, upon a recommendation from his former professor, William James, Hall was appointed professor of psychology at Johns Hopkins University. Among his students were John Dewey and James McKeen Cattel, both of whom became noted leaders in education in the first half of the twentieth century (Wilson, 1914). In many societies (e.g., the Inuit), boundary crossers are obliged to try to interpret and intercede for those on either side of the boundary. Dr. Rudmin completed a B.A. in philosophy at Bowdoin College in Maine, an M. A. in audiology at SUNY Buffalo, and a Ph.D. in social psychology at Queen University in Ontario. He has lived and worked in the United States, the Philippines, Japan, and since 1978 in Canada. His spouse, Toyoko, is Japanese. Their children are schooled in French. The primary focus of Dr. Rudmin research is the psychology of ownership and possession. He is currently an assistant professor in Queen Faculty of Law and School of Business. History of psychology is his pleasure. Peace is his passion. Summary Peace psychology has a history that is both long and prominent. However, that fact is little known and little appreciated, even among contemporary peace-activist psychologists. This article presents 17 brief biographies of psychologists who are part of this important heritage: Pythagoras, Jeremy Bentham, Franz Brentano, William James, August Forel, Ivan Pavlov, Sigmund Freud, James McKeen Cattell, Mary Whiton Calkins, Alexander Chamberlain, Alfred Adler, William McDougall, Edward Tolman, Gordon Allport, Gustav Ichheiser, Margaret Mead, and Charles Osgood. It is important that more recognition and appreciation be given to the long and prominent history of psychology in peace research and peace activism.

Keywords: Biography [2] Gradients [3] Born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on 2 February 1869, Charles Manning Child [4] was the only surviving child of Mary Elizabeth and Charles Chauncey Child, a prosperous, old New England family. Growing up in Higganum, Connecticut, Child was interested in biology from an early age. He made extensive collections of plants and minerals on his family farm and went on to study biology at Wesleyan University [5], commuting from his family home. Child received his PhB in 1890 and MS in biology in 1892, and then went on to study in Leipzig [6] after his parents’ death. He worked for a short time in the psychology laboratory of Wilhelm Wundt [7], and then pursued studies in zoology under the supervision of Rudolf Leuckhart. His doctoral dissertation investigated morphological aspects of insect sense organs. Leuckhart emphasized the functional purpose of morphological structures and led many of his students to develop and defend the notion of teleology, including Child, who completed his PhD in 1894. The preformation [8]-epigenesis [9] controversy further fueled Child’s interest in early development and form. His career was devoted to finding the mechanisms that govern development and his working hypothesis posited a role for physiological factors. These factors were thought to play a key role in communication between protoplasmic units and were responsible for many processes in an organism’s life cycle. By the late 1890s, Child identified simple organisms as the best way to investigate these factors and life processes.
