These seven units are (1) Exploration and Colonization;(2) The Revolutionary Period and Its Aftermath;(3) Sectionalism, Civil War, and Reconstruction;(4) The United States Becomes a World Power; (5) World War I--World War II; (6) Challenges of a Transitional Era; and (7) America's Involvement in Cultural Affairs. Bibliographical references are included at the end of each unit, and other source materials are recommended. The significant contributions and achievements of people rrom these diverse backgrounds have combined to make our American heritage. Through omission or by superficial pre- sentation, however, the role of certain ethnic groups in the development of this nation has been obscure. It is the purpose of this booklet to provide supplementary material to the regular social studies program which will give a more comprehensive coverage to the role of these Americans in the development of this country with the realization that by no means is it inclusive of all multi-ethnic contributions; and by so doing, to help every child develop a positive self-image as he views the contributions of the members of his own ethnic group. r Introduction The material in this booklet is designed for supplementary use in the regular social studies program. It is intended as a teacher guide in objectives, activities, and supportive content, with the focus on the contributions of Americans from all ethnic groups to the development of the United States of America. Flexible units usable at three levels - the upper elementary, the junior high school, and the high school - have been developed, with material arranged in outline form. Bibliographical references are included, although an annotated bibliography has been pre- pared in a separate booklet; other source materials are recommended. 4 GENERAL OBJECTIVES To develop understanding of and respect for the men of all races who by their significant endeavors have been the leaders in all phabes of the growth and development of the United States of America. To help all children develop a positive self-image in the American way of life today. To enlighten and strengthen the lives of all children through a better understanding of current issues in order to improve our nation for tomorrow. UNIT I EXPLORATION AND COLONIZATION Introduction Men of all nationalities participated in the discovery and explo- ration of America. The history of America began with the settling of the thirteen original colonies on the Atlantic Seaboard. People who emigrated to the colonies were people of great courage and determination. These explorers and colonizers brought Old World ways with them, but conditions in a new world forced them to make changes in their customs and ideas, resulting in the development of a distinctly American society. w The purpose of this unit is to provide supplementary information con- cerning the exploration-colonization period. exploration and Colonization (1450-1763) I. The necessity of cooperating with neighbors of other ethnic groups, other faiths and other traditions guaranteed the rapid development of religious toleration, social equality, and political democracy. The young country began the task Of settling an entire continent with a population of only four million. This would have been an impossible undertaking without the continuous arrival of new immigrants. These men and women affected, and quite often determined, the cultural and social aspects our society today. This dissertation examines the experiences of campeños and campeñas, men and women who lived and worked in the banana fincas (plantations) of the Tela Railroad Company, a subsidiary of the United Fruit Company, and the Standard Fruit Company in the period leading up to the strike of 1954. It describes the lives, work, and relationships of agricultural workers in the North Coast during the period, traces the development of the labor movement, and explores the formation of a banana worker identity and culture that influenced labor and politics at the national level. This study focuses on the years 1944-1957, a period of political reform, growing dissent against the Tiburcio Carías Andino dictatorship, and worker agency and resistance against companies' control over workers and the North Coast banana regions dominated by U.S. companies. Actions and organizing among many unheralded banana finca workers consolidated the powerful general strike and brought about national outcomes in its aftermath, including the state's institution of the labor code and Ministry of Labor.

At Wichita State University’s Ulrich Museum, from September 16 to December 16, 2012, these questions were addressed in an exhibition of work celebrating the centenary of Gordon Parks’s 1912 birth. Titled “The Hard Kind of Courage: Gordon Parks and the Photography of the Civil Rights Era,” this series of deeply profound images offered visual testimony to the heart-rending but courageous sacrifices made by Freedom Riders, the bombing victims Wat the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, the energized protesters at the Great March on Washington, and other participants in the movement. “Photographers of the era,” the exhibition demonstrated, “were integral to advancing the movement by documenting the public and private acts of racial discrimination.”1 Their images succeeded in capturing the strength, fortitude, resiliency, determination, and, most of all, the love of those who dared to step out on faith and stare down physical abuse and death. It is no small thing that all this was done amidst the challenges of being a black artist or writer seeking self-actualization in a racially charged era.

On the contrary, I believe it is a subject of major importance at this time. For the civilization of free men and women will triumph in this war, and the vital need for wise, courageous leadership will be more insistent in the post-war generation than ever before in historv. The education of both adults and children — and of the many, not the few — will stronglv influence the choice of poli- cies and of leaders capable of establishing and maintaining a better world for all humanity.

    The American Pioneer Woman Circa 1930 85 The American Pioneer Woman Circa 1930: Cultural Debates and the Role of Public Art Janet Galligani Casey Last February a dozen women set out to tour the U.S. They were a curious company. Dressed in the style of the early 19th century, they remained totally impervious to the appraising stares of approximately 750,000 persons. —Time Magazine, January 2, 19281 In 1927, an unusual contest seized the attention of the American public. Oklahoma oil magnate E. W. Marland, inspired to commemorate the role of women on the American frontier, set aside more than $300,000 for the eventual erection of a monument in his hometown of Ponca City and invited prominent sculptors to submit appropriate designs. Over the next several months, twelve miniature bronze casts based on those designs were exhibited in major cities throughout the U.S., drawing tens of thousands of visitors who were invited to share their opinions via formal ballot. Although Marland retained the right to make the final decision, art critics, cultural commentators, and ordinary citizens nonetheless engaged in robust debate about the suitability of each of the models and, by extension, the symbolic parameters for an iconic female of the frontier. A compreen- são das idéias de Bruner serve para elucidar aspectos estruturais da Teoria da Aprendiza- gem Musical de Gordon e permite o esclarecimento de procedimentos e propostas de Gor- don dentro da perspectiva da psicologia cognitiva. O pesquisador estadunidense Edwin Gordon desenvolveu nos últimos 50 anos uma extensa obra nas áreas de psicologia da música e educação musical. Sua trajetória acadê- mica passa pelo doutoramento na University of Iowa (1958), atuação como docente na University of Iowa, 1958-1973, na State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY- Buf- falo), 1973-1979, até sua permanência na Carl Seashore Chair for Research in Music Edu- cation da Temple University entre 1979 e sua aposentadoria em 1997. Durante sua trajetó- ria acadêmica publicou 94 livros, com traduções em português, italiano e lituano, além de ter orientado aproximadamente 40 dissertações de doutorado. Sua carreira como pesquisa- dor nas áreas de psicologia da música e educação musical influenciaram toda uma corrente de pesquisa na linha de música. Nesta abordagem, os processos cognitivo-musicais são observados a partir de uma estrutura seqüencial de desenvolvimento que aplica à área de música a proposta teórica de Jerome Bruner publicada em Toward a Theory of Instruction (1965) Nos primeiros anos de pesquisas na Univeristy of Iowa, Gordon inicia um profundo estudo sobre a aptidão musical e os processos que influenciam o desenvolvimento musical do indivíduo baseado nos trabalhos de Seashore e Drake.

In this article the impact of the U.S. coup in Guatemala on U.S.- Central America socio-political relations will be evaluated, through the critical analysis of different perspectives and attributes on the subject. This work identifies, with reference to academic theories, key motives and interests behind the intervention, in relation to the significance of Guatemalan democratic president Jacopo Arbenz’ s reforms in the wider social context of Central America. The possible wide-scale impact of these reforms with the creation of viable alternative model to American liberal capitalism and consequently of a perceivable potential threat to U.S. intrinsic interests in its hemisphere, will be reflectively explored throughout with the intent of proposing a solution over the 1954 U.S.
