This event is sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association and held in cooperation with the Colorado Music Educators Association Dr. Janet Galván , Professor of Music at Ithaca College, conducts the Ithaca College Women's Chorale, the Ithaca College Chorus, and is Artistic Director for the Ithaca Children’s Choir. Her New York colleagues recognized Dr. Galván’s contribution to choral music in 1995 when she received the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) New York Outstanding Choral Director Award. In 2010, she

founded the chorus UNYC which has performed with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra (Lanfranco Marcelleti, conductor).

Galván has conducted national, regional, and all-state choruses throughout the United States in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Washing- ton’s Constitution Hall, Minneapolis’ Symphony Hall, Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall, and Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center. She has conducted her own choral ensembles in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, and Avery Fisher Hall as well as in concert halls in Ireland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Austria, Canada, and Spain. Her choral ensembles have also appeared at national, regional, and state music conferences. She has conducted the chamber orchestra, Virtuosi Pragneses, the State Philharmonic of Bialystok, Poland, the Ca- yuga Chamber Orchestra, the Madrid Chamber Orchestra, and the New England Symphonic Ensemble in choral/orchestral performances. Galván was the sixth national honor choir conductor for ACDA, and was the conductor of the North American Children’s Choir which

performed annually in Carnegie Hall from 1995-2007. She was also a guest conductor for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 2002.

Galván has been a guest conductor and clinician in the United Kingdom, Canada, Belgium, Austria, the Czech Republic, Greece, and Brazil as well as national and regional choral and music education conferences and the World Symposium on Choral Music. She was on the faculty for the first Tran- sient Glory Symposium in New York and will be on the faculty for the Carnegie Hall Choral Institute, the Transient Glory Symposium in February of 2012.

Galván has two choral music series with the Roger Dean Publishing Company and is the author of chapters in two books, Teaching Music through Performance in Choir, Volume 2 and The School Choral Program: Philosophy, Planning, Organizing and Teaching . She is also the series advisor to Latin Accents, a series with Boosey & Hawkes. Her article on the changing voice was published in the International Federation of Choral Music Journal in August of 2007 and was reprinted in La Circulare del Se- cretariat de Corals Infantils de Catalunga.

Galván has been recognized as one of the country’s leading conducting teachers, and her students have received first place awards and have been finalists in both the graduate and undergraduate divisions of the American Choral Directors biennial National Choral Conducting Competition. Dr. Galván was a member of the Grammy Award-winning Robert Shaw Festival Singers (Telarc Recordings).Galván is the founder and faculty advisor of the Ithaca College ACDA Student Chapter. This chapter has won Outstanding Student Chapter at the last three national conventions of ACDA. She is past president of NYACDA.

Dr. Jamie Spillane is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Roberts Wesleyan College in New York. He directs the Roberts Wesleyan Chorale and teaches conducting. Previously, Dr. Spillane was director of Choral and Vocal Activities at Iowa Wesleyan College where he directed three choirs taught conducting and had a private voice studio. He also directed the Mount Pleasant Chorale, a college and community ensemble that often performed under his direction with the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra. The Chorale and the Iowa Wesleyan College Choir recently combined to perform the Iowa premier of Stephen Paulus’ “ To Be Certain of the Dawn a Holocaust remembrance oratorio ”, as well as: Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music , the Duruflé Requiem , the Mozart Requiem , Bern- stein’s Chichester Psalms , and the Bach Magnificat in D major .

In the summers, Spillane has taught graduate choral conducting at the University Connecticut and Central Connecticut State University and directed a vocal jazz choir for talented high school students at the Indiana State University. Prior to coming to Iowa, Dr. Spillane was at the University of Arizona in Tucson. At the University of Arizona, Spillane was director of the Symphonic Choir, the premier under- graduate choir, the 125 voice University Community Chorus and orchestra, and UAVJE, the university vocal jazz ensemble as well as teaching undergraduate choral conducting. Spillane was also the Chancel Choir Director at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. For 14 years, Dr. Spillane was chairman of the Ledyard High School Music Department in Ledyard, Connecticut where he directed a program that grew to over 400 singers in 12 choirs that performed throughout America and Europe and at state and division conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and Music Educators National Conference. Ledyard High school was twice voted a Grammy Signature School as one of the top 100 high school music programs in the United States.

Dr. Spillane is a very active festival conductor, adjudicator, and clinician who enjoys working with choirs of all ages. He has conducted All-State or honor choirs in Connecticut, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Indiana, Missouri, Arizona, North Dakota, Nebraska, Rhode Island, and Iowa and has presented interest sessions at state and divisional conventions. In 2009, Dr. Spillane directed All-State Mixed Choir in North Dakota and the All-State Jazz Choir in Iowa. In 2008, Dr. Spillane was honored by the faculty and students of Iowa Wesleyan College as the Chadwick Teacher of the Year. Dr. Spillane holds degrees from Ithaca College, the Univer- sity of Connecticut, and the University of Arizona and is often listed in many Who’s Who publications . Dr. Spillane has been very active in ACDA and MENC and is a Past President of the Connecticut Chapter of the ACDA as well as the Eastern Division R & S Chair for Vocal Jazz and Show Choir. He is the chair of the 2011 Iowa Choral Directors Assoc. Summer Symposium and Convention in Mason City. He enjoys life with his wife Linda, and two sons J.B. & Colin.

Cristian Grases was the interim director of choral activities at Central Washington University and associate professor in choral music at California State University in Los Angeles. In 2001, he finished his master’s degree with honors in choral conducting with María Guinand and Alberto Grau in the Simón Bolívar University in Venezuela, and in 2009 obtained his doctoral degree at the University of Miami in Florida. Born in Venezuela in 1973, at age 11 Grases started his musical studies in Caracas. He developed as a chorister and instrumentalist, and then as a composer, assistant conductor, and conductor of choral and instrumental ensembles. He has studied composition, arranging, choral conducting, and orchestral conducting with national and international music masters. After two Bach-academie workshops with Helmuth Rilling in Venezuela, Grases was invited by Rilling under a scholarship to study choral and orchestral conducting at the Som- merakademie in Stutgart, Germany, in 1998. In 1995, Grases founded Cíncopah, a five-voice male vocal ensemble that is dedicated to the creation of new music based in vocal and jazz tendencies; he worked with them until 2002. From 1996 to 2002 he was part of the staff of the project Pequeños Cantores de la Schola as the conductor of the Second Level and Cantoría Juvenil. That same year, Grasas received a prestigious award for the arts in Venezuela: Orden José Felix Ribas for artistic merit. He also won the first and second prize in the choral arrangement competition Estilo Caribeño. Grases has been involved in many international concert tours with his former youth choir, Cantoría Juvenil of the Schola Cantorum de Caracas (Venezuela), and the Iowa Youth Chorus (USA), earning international prestige and recognition. He has served as guest conductor in concerts and workshops nationally and internationally and has been the coordinator of choral activities in the Youth Orchestra Foundation of Caracas under the direction of Jose Antonio Abreu. He has also taught choral conducting and methods, music history, world music, and general music at the undergraduate and graduate programs in the Simon Bolivar University of Caracas, Central Washington University, University of Miami, and CalStateLA. He was selected to be one of 16 participants of the Swedish competition for young conductors Eric Ericson Award in October 2003. In 2004 he was selected by the IFCM (International Federation for Choral Music) as one of a five-member committee for the Songbridge Project, together with renowned choral masters and chaired by the creator of the project, Erkki Pohjola (Finland).
