  • Final Dissertation Document
Abstract Title of Dissertation: INFLUENCES AND TRANSFORMATIONS: 19TH- CENTURY SOLO AND COLLABORATIVE PIANO REPERTOIRE Miori Sugiyama, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2012 Dissertation Directed by: Professor Rita Sloan School of Music, Piano Division This dissertation is an exploration of the inter-relationships of genres in the collaborative piano repertoire, particularly in music of the 19th century, an especially important period for collaborative piano repertoire. During this time, much of the repertoire gave equal importance to the piano in duo and ensemble repertoire. Starting with Schubert, and becoming more apparent with the development of the German lied, the piano became a more integral part of any composition, the piano part being no longer simplistic but rather a collaborative partner with its own voice. Mendelssohn transformed the genre of lieder by writing them, without their words, for solo piano. In addition to creating some of the greatest and most representative lieder in the Romantic period, composers such as Schumann, Brahms, and Strauss continued the evolution of the sonata by writing works that were more technically demanding on the performer, musically innovative, and structurally still evolving. In the case of Chopin who wrote mostly piano works, a major influence came from the world of opera, particularly the Bel Canto style. In exploring two specific genres, vocal and instrumental piano works by these composers; it is fascinating to see how one genre translates to another genre. This was especially true in the vocal and instrumental works by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, and Strauss. All of these composers, with the exception of Chopin, contributed equally to both the song and sonata genres.

  • The Most Common Orchestral Excerpts for the Horn: a Discussion of Performance Practice
The most common orchestral excerpts for the horn: a discussion of performance practice by Shannon L. Armer Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Music in the Faculty of Humanities University of Pretoria Supervisor: Dr. J. deC Hinch Pretoria January 2006 © University of Pretoria ii ABSTRACT This study describes in detail the preparation that must be done by aspiring orchestral horn players in order to be sufficiently ready for an orchestral audition. The general physical and mental preparation, through to the very specific elements that require attention when practicing and learning a list of orchestral excerpts that will be performed for an audition committee, is investigated. This study provides both the necessary tools and the insight borne of a number of years of orchestral experience that will enable a player to take a given excerpt and learn not only the notes and rhythms, but also discern many other subtleties inherent in the music, resulting in a full understanding and mastery thereof. Ten musical examples are included in order to illustrate the type of additional information that a player must gain so as to develop an in-depth knowledge of an excerpt. Three lists are presented within the text of this study: 1) a list of excerpts that are most commonly found at auditions, 2) a list of those excerpts that are often included and 3) other excerpts that have been requested but are not as commonly found. Also included is advice regarding the audition procedure itself, a discussion of the music required for auditions, and a guide to the orchestral excerpt books in which these passages can be found.

  • The Pianist's Freedom and the Work's Constrictions
The Pianist’s Freedom and the Work’s Constrictions What Tempo Fluctuation in Bach and Chopin Indicate Alisa Yuko Bernhard A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music (Performance) Sydney Conservatorium of Music University of Sydney 2017 Declaration I declare that the research presented here is my own original work and has not been submitted to any other institution for the award of a degree. Alisa Yuko Bernhard 10 November 2016 i Abstract The concept of the musical work has triggered much discussion: it has been defined and redefined, and at times attacked and deconstructed, by writers including Wolterstorff, Goodman, Levinson, Davies, Nattiez, Goehr, Abbate and Parmer, to name but a few. More often than not, it is treated either as an abstract sound-structure or, in contrast, as a culturally constructed concept, even a chimera. But what is a musical work to the performer, actively engaged in a “relationship” with the work he or she is interpreting? This question, not asked often enough in scholarship, can be used to yield fascinating insights into the ontological status of the work. My thesis therefore explores the relationship between the musical work and the performance, with a specific focus on classical pianists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. I make use of two methodological starting-points for considering the nature of the work. Firstly, I survey what pianists have said and written in interviews and biographies regarding their role as interpreters of works. Secondly, I analyse pianists’ use of tempo fluctuation at structurally significant moments in a selection of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach and Frederic Chopin.

Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. Meanwhile Hyperion bring out another volume (no.79!) of their Romantic Piano Concerto series, more Machaut from the wonderful Orlando Consort (see our cover picture), and Brahms songs from soprano Harriet Burns. Another Hyperion Brahms release features as our 'Disc of the Month': the Violin Sonatas in a superb new recording from star team Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien (see below).
