New Liszt Edition 2016Febr.Pdf index index Hungarian National Melodies and other works Volume 7 in the Supplement Series This volume contains Liszt’s earliest pieces written in a Hungarian style. The complete set of Magyar dallok / Ungarische National-Melodien [Hungarian songs] consisting of 11 items is published here for the first time in a scholarly edition. The composer began to write them resulting from his first return visit to Pest in 1839. The music of these pieces was partly re-used by Liszt at the beginning of the 1850s in his deservedly popular 15 Hungarian Rhapsodies. The Carnival at Pest was inspired by his second tour of Hungary in 1846; it was later re-worked as the 9th Hungarian Rhapsody. The present volume also contains the so far unknown very first version of the 1st Hungarian Rhapsody, and in addition two large fragments from the 1840s plus a number of album leaves. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English, and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes, makes this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. This edition’s contents are identical to those of the hardcover edition with the exception that the critical notes are not included. See the complete contents here. The mode of publication, the usable sources and the means of distinguishing the editorial additions and substitutions are described in the “General Preface” to be found at the beginning of each volume. The most important information about the indi- vidual works is provided in the “Preface” to each volume. Facsimile pages from original manuscripts by Liszt can be found before the printed score; after the printed score come the “Critical Notes”, in English. The series appeared between 1970 and 1985, comprising 18 volumes, 2358 pages altogether of musical score. In these volumes 290 works were published in their final form; in addition, 32 early versions differing significantly from their final form were published in the appendices to the volumes. The series contains 38 works that appeared here in print for the first time. The volumes of Series I of the Complete Edition were issued in two versions: A: FERENC LISZT — NEW EDITION OF THE COMPLETE WORKS The volumes are bound in blue linen with embossed gold lettering (“Clothbound”). At the beginning of each volume the “General Preface” to the complete edition, together with the “Preface” to that volume, can be found in both German and English. The musical score section is followed by the text of the “Critical Notes”, in English only. B: FERENC LISZT PIANO WORKS — A PRACTICAL VERSION OF THE NEW LISZT EDITION The volumes are bound in glossy grey boards, with white lettering (“Paper Cover”). At the beginning of each volume the “General Preface” * and the “Preface” to that volume can be found, in German and English. The musical score is identical to that in the A ver- sion, but the “Critical Notes” are not included. * In the Series I volumes this is entitled “Editorial Note”. The same facsimile pages are to be found in both versions, and the texts of the series and volume prefaces are the same in both. The size of the score in both the linenbound and the board edition is 23 x 30 cm. • Liszt Franz Ferenc

Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. Meanwhile Hyperion bring out another volume (no.79!) of their Romantic Piano Concerto series, more Machaut from the wonderful Orlando Consort (see our cover picture), and Brahms songs from soprano Harriet Burns. Another Hyperion Brahms release features as our 'Disc of the Month': the Violin Sonatas in a superb new recording from star team Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien (see below).

A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY from THE UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG by KEITH THOMAS JOHNS (M.Litt.,B.A.Hons.,Grad.Dip.Ed., F.L.C.M., F.T.C.L., L.T.C.L. ) SCHOOL OF CREATIVE ARTS 1986 i ABSTRACT This thesis examines the central concern in an analysis of the symphonic poems of Franz Liszt, that is, the relationship between programme, harmony and form. In order to make a thorough and clear analysis of this relationship a structural/semiotic analysis has been developed as the analysis of best fit. Historically it has been fashionable to see Liszt's symphonic poems in terms of sonata form or a form only making sense in terms of the attached programme. Both of these ideas are critically examined in this analysis.

  • K on the Oeuvre of Ferenc Liszt

They also converse about the im- portance of creativity and even improvisation in performances of canonized compo- sitions, and discuss the limits of the musical score as a means of conveying the in- tentions of a composer. The conversation touches on the performances of Liszt’s pu- pils, including for instance conductor Felix Weingartner and pianist Emil von Sauer, who offered a dazzling rendition of Liszt’s Ricordanza Etude at the age of 79. Sauer’s performances of Liszt’s piano concerti (conducted by Weingartner) offer clear instances of the ways in which the performer can vary the tempo of a composi- tion, even when there are no such indications of tempo changes in the score. Kocsis comments on the contributions of pianists György Cziffra and Alfred Brendel as two of the most significant interpreters of Liszt’s work. Kocsis and Szegedy-Maszák pose challenging questions regarding the notion of the completed composition and the completed work of art, as well as the authenticity of manuscript scores and the creative responsibilities of contemporary performers in the recreation and reanima- tion of a composer’s work.
