FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL/OFFICER-IN-CHARGE College is situated at the town of Jhargram, the District Head Quarters of the newly created District of Jhargram. Founded in 1949 as Jhargram Agricultural College, grew into a hallowed centre of higher learning, offering to the undergraduate students a whole array of subjects from three disciplines of Arts, Commerce and Science. Initially affiliated to the University of Calcutta, the college came under affiliation of Vidyasagar University in 1985. In 2005, the college introduced Dr. Debnarayan Roy its first Postgraduate course in Chemistry. Gradually, Postgraduate courses Principal/Officer-in-Charge in Zoology and Bengali also came into being from 2006 and 2008, respectively. The faculties regularly participate in seminars, workshops etc. and their research papers are regularly published in reputed journals and periodicals. Different minor and major research projects funded by different government agencies are carried out by the faculty members of various departments of the college. In its seventy-one years of existence, the college has continuously strived to cope with the changes with time and offer better education to its students. The mission of the college has been the empowerment of the under-privileged. Many of the alumni of the college are at the top positions of various government and non-government organisations. Many are reputed academicians. Many have made names in the field of art, music, literature etc. While the college takes pride in them, it busies itself with the duty of grooming the present students and looks forward to a brighter future for the coming generations. The college welcomes the young aspirants to help them realise their dreams and thereby contribute to our beautiful nation. HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE Jhargram Raj College is situated at the town of Jhargram, the District Head Quarters of the newly created District of Jhargram. The area is a place of natural beauty and diverse tribal culture. The college is set amid the serene and verdant forests of primordial trees such as Mahua, Sal, Piasal etc. It has registered a spectacular growth over the years since its inception. In 1949, the young of Jhargram, Raja Sir Narasingha Malla Ugal Sanda Deb, OBE, KBE, at the request of Pramathanath Banerjee, the then Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, made a bequest of Rupees One Lakh in cash JRC Science Building and vast tracts of land to set up a college at Jhargram. The Khaira Professor of Agriculture of the University of Calcutta Dr Pabitra Kumar Sen who was the first principal of the college, helped with the Khaira Endowment Fund. The college was handed over to the Government of West Bengal in 1953. Initially affiliated to the University of Calcutta, the college came under affiliation of Vidyasagar University in 1985. On 8th May, 1999, the college celebrated the completion of 50 years of its glorious existence. In 2005, the college introduced its first Postgraduate course in Chemistry. Gradually, Postgraduate courses in Zoology and Bengali also came into being from 2006 and 2008, respectively. These activities lead to involve and motivate the students, especially those who are pursuing postgraduate courses in this college, to a JRC Arts Building research career. MISSION & VISION Jhargram Raj College being a government college offering quality education programmes at UG as well as a few PG levels takes a special place in the area. Many students of this college come from extremely poor families and under-privileged sections of the society and, are often the first- generation learners. Their requirements are quite different from that of the students belonging to middle class and comparatively well-to-do families. To achieve what is required of it, Jhargram Raj College functions accordingly to impart good and quality education in particular and contribute towards social welfare in general. The college consistently works towards: • Spreading education and awareness. • Making youths socially responsible and able to undertake the social responsibilities that are demanded of a good citizen. • Grooming students as sensitive men and women. • Providing a process of learning via activities that cross-links the society with education. • Imparting values that lead to accountability for the society at large. • Inculcating a sense of understanding for self as well as for others.

PROFILE OF THE COLLEGE LOCATION: Jhargram Raj College is situated at the town of Jhargram, the District Head Quarters of Jhargram It takes about ten minutes from Jhargram Rail Station of - railway line under South Eastern railway. Government and privates buses are also available from the nearby towns like Khargrapur & . It is about 22 km by road from Mumbai national highway DEPARTMENTS: The College has 15 undergraduate departments combining both the Arts, Commerce and Science faculties where Honours courses (except in Physical education) and associated general courses are taught. The general course curriculums are also offered to the students. Three of these departments, namely Chemistry, Zoology & Bengali also conduct Post-Graduate courses. These departments enjoy academic autonomy in Post Graduate courses guided by Vidyasagar University. All undergraduate & Post graduate departments follow the semester system under CBCS affiliated by Vidyasagar University. INFRASRUCTURE: The college is set in a huge campus of 327 acres. The college has three separate faculty buildings, one administrative building, a well-equipped Library, ten Laboratories for Science faculties & modern gym for all students and faculty members. The college has three staff quarters and three separate Hostel accommodation for Boys and Girls students. The college also has canteen facility and a playground, badminton court and basketball court of its own. LIBRARY: The antiquity and heritage of Jhargram Raj College resides in its Central Library. There are over one lakh books and journals covering different branches of knowledge. A two-storied library extension provides separate sections for books on Humanities, Science and Commerce. A Reading Room is provided to the students. The rich collection of rare books allows the students a glimpse into the tradition of bygone eras. The use of INFLIBNET and LIBSYS software is underway for digital accession of the books and journals. Students gain access to the facilities of the Central Library at the beginning of each academic session. Specialised information is available in the departmental and seminar libraries through Librarika, an online facility. The Libraries contribute to the academic empowerment of the students of Jhargram Raj College in a very significant way.

HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION: The College provides separate hostel accommodation to boy and girl students. In fact, the college has three separate hostel buildings viz. Vidyasagar Chhatrabas, New Boys’ Hostel and Girls’ Hostel. The boys’ hostel at present accommodates 220 boarders, while the girls’ hostel accommodates 50 boarders. Application for hostel accommodation has to be JRC Ladies’ Hostel made in the prescribed form to be obtained from the hostel office. Hostel accommodation is made strictly made according as per the existing norms. All boarders must abide by hostel rules and regulations and violation of the hostel rules are severely dealt with. Ragging is strictly prohibited. Any hostel boarder if found to be involved in ragging will be seriously dealt with as per Aerial View of JRC Boys’ Hostels revised Govt. norms.

SCHOLARSHIP/FREE STUDENTSHIP: As per existing Government rules, merit-based scholarships from Govt. of West Bengal (like SVMCM, Post Matric Scholarship for SC/ST Students, Kanyashree, Aikyashree, etc). and Govt. of (like National Scholarship, Inspire Fellowsip etc) are allotted among meritorious, poor, Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste students of the college. Apart from that, initiatives would be undertaken to grant free and half-free studentship to needy and meritorious students subject to approval of the same from the Higher Education Department, Govt. of West Bengal.

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS Units – I, II, III & IV, Jhargram Raj College)

The National Service Scheme is a central government scheme, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It was launched on the 24th of September, 1969, with the aim of involving students in the task of national service. Keeping its motto of ‘Not Me, But You’ as its goal, the National Service Scheme of Jhargram Raj College has had a long tradition of volunteer activity by the Swacch Bharat - Cleanliness Drive students of the college. Today, there are four units of NSS operating under the guidance of the National Service Scheme Cell, Vidyasagar University, and the NSS Regional Directorate, Kolkata. Led by energetic Programme Officers, the NSS Units of Jhargram Raj College induct volunteers in their very first year of college, and they remain enrolled as volunteers till their final year of college. They are encouraged to take part in the calendar programmes conducted by the NSS Units, Blood Donation and Thalassemia Detection in the extension and outreach programmes conducted in the adopted villages, and also in special programmes held from time to time, such as week-long special camps. The volunteers actively participate in tree plantation and blood donation programmes, cleanliness drive, health awareness campaigns, special camps, social work at adopted villages etc. all around the year. The volunteers of these units are active participants in all these programmes and are well-trained to help the society at la rge. Jhargram Raj College is one of the most active colleges in the district with regard to the activities of the National Service Scheme, and during the crisis of Covid-19 in the year 2020, Jhargram Raj Special camp at Adopted Villages College has been nominated to be the nodal office in the District of Jhargram, to lead the crusade against Covid-19. SPORTS AND GAMES The college has its own playground, volleyball, badminton and basketball courts. The college also boasts of a State-of-the Art modern gym. The college holds its Annual Athletic Meet every year and various activities are held and encouraged among the students. The winners are felicitated. This is further extended into inter-departmental, inter-mural, inter- college and inter-district meets. At least Badminton Tournament three to four teams are fielded per year for various inter-collegiate competitions organized by Vidyasagar University and the Inter District College Meets, and they have met tremendous success. The College organizes badminton, cricket and Bratachari and Yoga Camp football competitions between the teachers, students and staff and this generates immense excitement and participation in the college. These activities encourage the sportsman spirit, healthy competition and temporal efficiency, along with the ability to take both success and failure in their stride. A spirit of companionship also blossoms out of these activities. Bratachari and Yoga camps are also organised every year and students wholeheartedly participate in these camps.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES Healthy cultural atmosphere of academic institutions are required for psychological upliftment and overall development of students. Such encouraging atmosphere allows expression of creative skills rests in each individual student. Teachers from different departments who show efficiencies in cultural activities regularly take part in conduction and overall supervision of various cultural programmes. Students of each of the department celebrate Teachers’ Day, Fresher’s Welcome and Farewell Ceremony of outgoing students every year. All of the departments are decorated up to its full. Students give their full

Observation of Sampriti Saptaha efficiency to beautify their own departments and uplifting their performance to the highest limit. The celebrations become a grand success every year. Celebration of different memorable dates like Independence Day, Rabindra Jayanti, Bhasa Dibas etc. are a common practice of Jhargram Raj college. The Cultural Sub Committee supervises the entire programme from starting to the end for smooth conduction of each one. The Members of Students’ Union with other interested students Cultural Programme on Freshers’ Welcome in acquaintance with The College Authority and the Cultural Subcommittee celebrates Annual College Fresher’s Welcome, College Teachers’ Day Celebration and Saraswati Puja. Every year the college remains filled with vibrating, bright and smiling faces of young boys and girls on these days. DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW

DEPARTMENT OF BENGALI (UG & PG) The Department of Bengali is one of the oldest departments of the institution that started its journey since the inception of the institution. Established in 1949, the Department of Bengali began to offer B.A. General and Honours courses under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta in 1957 and 1969 respectively. In 1985 academic affiliation of the department shifted to Vidyasagar University. The department has started its post graduate course in Bengali in 2008 and from 2016 the department is running the course autonomously under the affiliation of Vidyasagar University. Class room teaching involves not only standard lectures but also audio-visual presentations and interactive sessions. The department has an enriched departmental library with a collection of 600 books on diverse fields of . The department organizes for intradepartmental Students’ Seminar, special talks, seminar lectures from time to time and arranges for publication of departmental wall magazine every year. Besides, regular academic exercise, the Department encourages its students to actively participate in extension and outreach activities and arranges for educational trips, excursions, field surveys on local culture and tribal lifestyle on a regular basis. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH The Department of English of Jhargram Raj College started functioning since the inception of the institution. The erudite and dedicated faculty guides the students through the intricacies of the undergraduate C.B.C.S. (Honours and General) academic curriculum of Vidyasagar University, even as they are encouraged to challenge established notions and theories. The department offers the wealth of a Central and Seminar Library, and organizes seminars, workshops, quizzes, debates, movie screenings, and wall magazines for the active participation of the students, whereby they are exposed to the larger academic domain. Into this is layered experiential, cultural, environmental and gender issues, so that the students have a holistic experience. The success of the departmental endeavour is concretised in the significant academic performances in the university and competitive examinations, and the several awards and prizes received in sporting and cultural events through the years. DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY Established in the year 1953, the Department of History began to offer B.A. General and Honours courses under the University of Calcutta in 1957 and 1962, respectively. In 1985 academic affiliation of the department shifted to Vidyasagar University. Within the scope of the curriculum designed by Vidyasagar University, the department takes up the role of facilitator in order to equip students for careers both within and outside the academia, with an emphasis on developing their research skills. Apart from standard lectures, class room teaching involves audio-visual presentations and interactive sessions. The department regularly organises museum visits and educational tours to historical places in India. With the objective of enhancing their learning skills micro-teaching sessions and extension lecturers are usually arranged. Students’ seminar, quiz and debates are organised on a regular basis with the purpose of further invigorating the knowledge of the subject among the pupils of the department and make them nationally and globally more competitive. DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Philosophy started its journey in the year 1963 and starts Honours course in the year 1970. Later on it was affiliated to Vidyasagar University. From 2018-19 academic session it starts CBCS system under the guideline provided by the mother University. This department tries to guide students not only for pursing the academic aspect, but also put in real concern to guide them in understanding and implementing the higher objectives of life. The seminar library provides total 250 books to the students to quench their academic thrust. Political Science was taught as a pass subject at that time under the affiliation of Calcutta University. Political Science was started in 1969. However, the department came under the affiliation of Vidyasagar University in 1985 and the department now follows the CBCS pattern as per Vidyasagar University norms. The department has an enriched departmental library. Students can borrow books from the library. We have many students who had qualified NET/ SET examinations in later period. The department organizes for intradepartmental Students’ Seminar and arranges for publication of departmental wall magazine every year. The Department also takes a leading role in preparing students for various competitions like Youth Parliament Competitions, inter-college quiz and debate competitions etc. on a regular basis. DEPARTMENT OF SANSKRIT The Department of Sanskrit commenced functioning in 1953 with the I.A. course, under the University of Calcutta. In 1985, the college changed its affiliation, and thus, the department began to conduct courses under the Vidyasagar University. Today, the Department offers B.A. Honours in Sanskrit, and teaches Sanskrit as an elective subject under the C.B.C.S. The Department organises Seminars on Sanskrit Language and Literature, observes special days such as ‘Sanskrit Divas’, and encourages the publication of an annual departmental wall magazine, to expose students to the rich literature, heritage, culture and wisdom of ancient India. DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION The Department of Physical Education was established in 1979 with B.A. (Pass course) under Calcutta University. Presently the department is offering an elective subject under Vidyasagar University and carrying 3tier course and semester system U G Course. The Department takes theoretical classes and supplements it with practical classes for a better understanding of the basic skills and techniques of sports. The Department organises many Bratachari Camp organised by the Dept. of Physical Education events throughout the year like Seminars, Badminton tournament, Annual Athletic Meet, Bratachari camps every year and the students participate wholeheartedly in every event. The department is also equipped with modern amenities like a State-of-the-Art multi-gymnasium, Physiotherapy Room, Yoga Room, Souna Bath Chamber, Steam Bath Chamber and other fitness equipments. DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY The Department of Botany has a distinctive place in the glorious history of Jhargram Raj College, Jhargram. The Department is continuously catering to the academic and intellectual aspirations of the students inclined to the discipline of plant science since inception of Jhargram Raj College. Started as Department of Biology in the early fifties, when the conceptual aspects of the biological science were undergoing radical metamorphosis, the present Department started humming as the Department of Botany under the University of Calcutta. DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY (UG and PG) The Department of Chemistry was established in early 90s with very limited number of teachers and non-teaching staff, under Vidyasagar University. Undergraduate study began in the year 1989. Later, in the year of 1985, the department got affiliated to Vidyasagar University. The department has started its post graduate course in Chemistry in 2005 and from 2016 the department is running the course autonomously. The department is enriched with smart classroom, seminar library and well-equipped laboratory and instruments. Regular excursion and field trips are arranged by the department as per curriculum. The students of the department do pretty well in University examinations. A good number of students have been qualified in various competitive Examinations including NET, GATE.etc. in recent Past. DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS Department of Mathematics, established in 1953, offers Mathematics (Honours) and Mathematics (General) course. The department has well equipped computer laboratory and a rich seminar library with significant number of books on various fields of Mathematics for students. Students’ seminar is one of the regular and important phenomena in the department. Apart from the students’ seminar the department organizes state / national level seminars as well as quiz and debates on a regular basis. Significant number of students have performed well in their University Examinations in the previous years and many of the students participated in various level competitive examinations to secure jobs. DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS Department of Physics offers Physics (Honours) and Physics (General) course. It is one of the oldest colleges which offer Physics (Honours) under Vidyasagar University. The department has well equipped laboratory with separate computer laboratory. The department also has a seminar library for students. The department is supported by DBT, Government of India. Students of this department also participate in extracurricular activity. One student of 2019 batch participated in state level quiz competition. Most of the students after completing Physics (Honours) course go for higher study. Two student of 2019 batch qualified JAM examination. DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY The Department of Physiology has a glorious history of progress since its inception in 1985. Physiology (General) and Physiology (Honours) were introduced in the years 1986 and 1995 respectively under the affiliation of Vidyasagar University. DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY (UG & PG) Department of Zoology at Jhargram Raj College was established in the year of 1970-71. Since the inception, the courses offered by the department were affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Later, in the year of 1985, the department got affiliated to Vidyasagar University. The department has started its post graduate course in Zoology in 2006 and from 2016 the department is running the course autonomously. The Department is well equipped with State-of-the-Art laboratories, smart classroom, computer laboratory, Departmental Library, one enriched museum and a central Instrumentation room equipped with a number of sophisticated instruments. • Loitering and lounging on the corridor are prohibited. • Admission to the college binds a student to abide by the College rules and all the directives that may be issued from time to time by the college authorities. • Students absent from class lectures for more than three consecutive days have to produce a letter by parent or guardian (whose signature appears on application form during admission) explaining the cause of absence. • A formal letter accompanied by a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner is necessary in case of sickness for over a week. All leave applications addressed to the Principal / Officer-in-Charge (forwarded through respective Heads of the Departments in case of Honours students) should be deposited at the students’ section of the College. • Students’ attendance is regularly monitored by the College and displayed on occasions in the notice board for necessary remedial measures by the students concerned. • The name of a student who has been absent for 15 consecutive working days of the College in any subject will be struck off from the register without intimation.

GENERAL INFORMATION • A student is advised to go through the notice board regularly. • Students are required to address their teachers and all other members of the teaching and non-teaching staff with due respect and politeness and are expected to behave properly. • Any kind of disobedience or objectionable behaviour may result in penal action leading even to expulsion from the college. • Strict action may be taken if college property including library books is wilfully damaged or destroyed. • Students should not enter the Principal’s chamber without permission. However they can meet the college officials at 1.30 pm and onwards from Monday to Friday. • Routine needs of the students are met usually by the staff in the students section of the office. • Application to be forwarded by the Principal / Officer-in Charge must be submitted in duplicate to the College. • Applications to be forwarded within a certain date must be submitted at least three clear working days ahead of that date. • Prayer for character-certificate or any other document by any current or ex-student is also to be made at least three clear working days ahead of the date by which it is required. Such application should clearly state the name, academic session, year, subject and roll no. of the candidate. • All such applications should be submitted to the College office, and in urgent case, to the Principal / Officer-in Charge or the Heads of the Departments concerned directly. • Any change in address/ telephone number/ guardian-status should be immediately brought to the notice of the College office for necessary change in the records. • No one, other than parents / guardian whose signature appears in the application form during admission is allowed to sign in any other document or represent them on their behalf in any case.
