Report of the Officer-in-charge: Junglemahal Zoological Park which started as a deer park in 1980 has grown to be a medium zoo and has become an important visitor’s destination in Jhargram town. It is located within the natural Sal forests thus providing natural habitat for the zoo animals. Over the last 4-5 years new enclosures for leopard, fishing cat, jungle cat, leopard cat, Monkey and Languor, Reptile House, Flying Birds Aviary, Administrative Building, Veterinary Hospital, Nature Interpretation Centre and Kitchen-cum-store, Zoo Supervisor Quarter, Barrack for Zoo Keepers etc are completed as per the guidelines of CZA. A new Hyena enclosure, Stand of Barrier, are also to be constructed. In 2019-20, 1,36,556 persons visited the zoo. Under the guidance of CZA and WBZA, many new works and initiatives are being taken up to further develop the Zoo. 2. History of the Zoo: Jhargram Mini Zoo has been started as Deer park in the year 1980 within a small patch of natural Sal forest in the outskirt of Jhargram Town. Subsequently it was accorded the status of Mini Zoo (Small category Zoo) on 9th September 2005 by the Central Zoo Authority. In the year 2014 the Govt. of west Bengal decided to upgrade the Mini zoo into a major Zoo and renamed as Junglemahal Zoological Park, Jhargram vide G.O No. 1153-For/O/11M-11/2015 dated Kolkata 3rd June, 2015 through the West Bengal Zoo Authority. The zoo was re-categorized as Medium zoo by Central Zoo Authority vide F.No.18-1/2017-CZA (Vol I)(AK) dated 21st November 2017. The Junglemahal Zoological Park, Jhargram is spread in an area 22.928 Ha. Covered by beautiful Sal coppice forest. 3. Vision :- The vision of Junglemahal Zoological Park, Jhargram is to showcase the rich biodiversity of lateritic-eco-system in the state of West Bengal. 4. Mission : The Junglemahal Zoological Park Jhargram, West Bengal intends to compliment the national efforts in conservation of wildlife, through breeding of endangered species of the Junglemahal region and to develop the empathy among the visitors of wild animals. 5. Objective : The Junglemahal Zoological Park, Jhargram intends to complement the national efforts in conservation of wildlife through breeding of endangered wild animal species of the Junglemahal region and develop empathy for wild animals amongst the visitors to the Park. 4 6.
