During the eighty-year-old life of TV, documentaries have undergone changes in the form and content. This paper is aimed at identifying one of the most important developments in TV documentaries which started in the 1990s and is known as “reality TV”. Recognition, emerging fields, generations and types of programmes of “reality TV” have been studied through surveys in this paper. Key words: TV, TV documentary, reality TV iafor The International Academic Forum www.iafor.org 1 The Asian Conference on Film & Documentary 2014 Official Conference Proceedings Introduction In this paper, the developments of TV documentary in the west and the industrial world from the early nineties and on the threshold of the 21st century will be studied. TV documentary has faced substantial changes in production, new administrative solutions and technical innovations which have led into the emergence of different types of TV documentaries. Like other innovations, it has somewhat shattered the foundations of formal structures of traditional documentary and has established new foundations and capacity for itself. Recognition, analysis and describing the features of TV documentary in this era include this paper’s words. Defining the topic and noting the main questions of the research Analytic examination of TV documentary programmes, in form and content, providing a comprehensive picture of the technical procedures, and transforming the content in TV documentary forms, from the early 1990s with emphasis on “reality TV” programmes in order to identify the capacities, facilities and limitation of such programmes, is the main topic of this research. This paper is meant to answer the following questions: 1- Based on what needs did the TV documentary start to change from the beginning of the 90s? 2- What TV structures did those needs lead into? 3- What is the innovation of such structures

Locally and globally film as an art form is being used to provoke, agitate, ask questions and generate new politicized communities. Experimental films in India and Pakistan have contested political, social and cultural status quo. Socially, culturally and politically marginalized groups across the globe have found adequate place in film narratives. The ulterior aim of the depiction of different categories of subalternity in films is to expand the idea of ‘art for life’s sake’. Indian film director Manish Jha’s Matrubhoomi- a Nation without Women (2005) and Pakistani film director Shoaib Mansoor’s Bol (2011) depict women issues of two different religions of two different countries. Matrubhoomi is a film based on the issue of female infanticide and female foeticide in a country like India and its effects on gender balance and the recurring social anarchy it creates. Matrubhoomi’s female protagonist Kalki is the last surviving woman who reminding of Draupadi of the Mahabharata undergoes tremendous sexual oppression within family at the hands of male family members who operate as arch patriarchs for her. The film depicts the horrors of life without woman. The narrative of Bol is based in the heart of Lahore and is placed in a house full of daughters.

  • MONTY PYTHON at 50 , a Month-Long Season Celebra
    Tuesday 16 July 2019, London. The BFI today announces full details of IT’S… MONTY PYTHON AT 50, a month-long season celebrating Monty Python – their roots, influences and subsequent work both as a group, and as individuals. The season, which takes place from 1 September – 1 October at BFI Southbank, forms part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the beloved comedy group, whose seminal series Monty Python’s Flying Circus first aired on 5th October 1969. The season will include all the Monty Python feature films; oddities and unseen curios from the depths of the BFI National Archive and from Michael Palin’s personal collection of super 8mm films; back-to-back screenings of the entire series of Monty Python’s Flying Circus in a unique big-screen outing; and screenings of post-Python TV (Fawlty Towers, Out of the Trees, Ripping Yarns) and films (Jabberwocky, A Fish Called Wanda, Time Bandits, Wind in the Willows and more). There will also be rare screenings of pre-Python shows At Last the 1948 Show and Do Not Adjust Your Set, both of which will be released on BFI DVD on Monday 16 September, and a free exhibition of Python-related material from the BFI National Archive and The Monty Python Archive, and a Python takeover in the BFI Shop. Reflecting on the legacy and approaching celebrations, the Pythons commented: “Python has survived because we live in an increasingly Pythonesque world.     Channel 4 and British Film: An Assessment of Industrial and Cultural Impact, 1982-1998 Laura Mayne This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. September 2014 i Abstract This thesis is an historical investigation of Channel 4’s influence on the British film industry and on British film culture between 1982 and 1998. Combining archival research with interview testimony and secondary literature, this thesis presents the history of a broadcaster’s involvement in British film production, while also examining the cultural and industrial impact of this involvement over time. This study of the interdependence of film and television will aim to bring together aspects of what have hitherto been separate disciplinary fields, and as such will make an important contribution to film and television studies. In order to better understand this interdependence, this thesis will offer some original ideas about the relationship between film and television, examining the ways in which Channel 4’s funding methods led to new production practices. Aside from the important part the Channel played in funding (predominantly low-budget) films during periods when the industry was in decline and film finance was scarce, this partnership had profound effects on British cinema in the 1980s and 1990s. In exploring these effects, this thesis will look at the ways in which the film funding practices of the Channel changed the landscape of the film industry, offered opportunities to emerging new talent, altered perceptions of British film culture at home and abroad, fostered innovative aesthetic practices and brought new images of Britain to cinema and television screens.
