World Bank: Kyrgyzstan – Desk and Field Studies Report 1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In Kyrgyzstan [KG], the existence of natural geological hazards (known as “geohazards”), such as landslides, mudflows and large scale river erosion are common in the more mountainous areas and threaten a “core network” of major roads. This report presents the findings of a study of geohazards along 850 km of roads in southern KG and their potential impact on road rehabilitation projects throughout the country. The study is based upon an assessment of 850 km of road visited, interviews with relevant institution and ministry personnel in Bishkek and Osh and research and information gathering on road rehabilitation in general throughout KG. The KG National Environmental Health Action Plan (NEHAP, 1997) includes a chapter on natural and industrial disasters and requires that effective measures are implemented to prevent and mitigate damage caused by natural hazards. There is a perception and understanding of the importance of natural hazards in KG, although overall road and ancillary structure design is not considered adequate in dealing with the risks from geohazards, in particular from river erosion along substantial sections of road in some areas. This study has shown that the locations and extent of geohazards (predominantly landslides, mudflows and river erosion) have been comprehensively mapped along the “core network” of major routes. There appears to be a good understanding of these issues and expertise within the relevant state organisations within KG. An annually upgraded atlas of natural hazards including maps and detailed descriptions of natural hazards is maintained. However, design, monitoring and mitigation measures necessary to ensure the future integrity of a rehabilitated “core network” is inadequate due to lack of resources and funding. The current response to geohazard and other natural hazard disasters is, due to force of circumstance, reactive. Using a cell methodology adopted by Biosphere Expeditions for volunteer expeditions, 77 cells of 2 x 2 km were surveyed and 22 interviews with local people were conducted. The surveys yielded no evidence of snow leopard (camera trap photos, tracks, scrapes, marking places, etc.), but the interviews indicated that snow leopard was present in the area and confirmed the importance of the area as a habitat for snow leopard. The surveys also showed that the area’s habitat is sufficiently varied and capable of sustaining a healthy prey base for the snow leopard as well as for other carnivores such as the wolf.

Introduction The Tien Shan are an active intracontinental mountain belt that is part of the Central Asian Orogenic System (fig. 1). In general the mountain belt is composed of E-W trending ranges, separated by (sub)-parallel intramontane depressions. The western part of the Tien Shan is for a large extent situated in the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, while the eastern part is located in China. The Tien Shan can be regarded as a mobile belt between two rigid micro-continent or micro- plates: to the south this is the Tarim plate, to the north, the Aktyuz-Boordin (which in fact represents the southern part of Kazakhstan-Junggar plate) (fig. 2). The Tien Shan belt was formed during the Palaeozoic closure of the Turkestan Ocean [Allen et al., 1992; Gao et al., 1998; Chen et al., 1999; Brookfield, 2000]. Island-arc systems and micro-plates converged with the northern margin of Tarim and were accreted to Tarim in the Middle to Late Palaeozoic. Final closure of the Turkestan oceanic basin was accomplished in the Late Palaeozoic, in the Permian, when the Tarim and Tien Shan units collided with the Kazakhstan-Junggar plate [Laurent-Charvet et al., 2002; Van der Voo et al., 2006; Yang et al., 2007]. Because a range of altitudinal belts exists, the region is characterized by high biological diversity at ecosystem, species and population levels. The aim of this review is to summarize all the available data from 1930 to date on alkaloid-containing plants of the Central Asian mountains. In Saur 301 of a total of 661 species, in Tarbagatai 487 out of 1195, in Dzungarian Alatau 699 out of 1080, in Tien Shan 1177 out of 3251, in Pamir-Alai 1165 out of 3422 and in Kopet Dag 438 out of 1942 species produce alkaloids. The review also tabulates the individual alkaloids which were detected in the plants from the Central Asian mountains.

The value of biodiversity of mountainous country is far beyond it. One of the largest rivers in Central Asia, the Syr Darya River formed stock here. Water from rivers flowing from Kyrgyzstan runs to neighboring countries: China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Quality and quantity of runoff significantly depends on the preservation of biodiversity, first of all the forest and grassland ecosystems in the catch basins of the rivers of Kyrgyzstan. Thus, in extremely continental and arid climate of Central Asian the state of Kyrgyzstan’s biodiversity obtains regional importance. Grassland ecosystems dominate in area and play an important role in the protection of mountainsides. Pastures are used for grazing and hay fields, indirect uses of grassland ecosystems are collecting mushrooms and berries, as well as medicinal herbs. Forest ecosystems play an important role in maintaining environmental balance, strengthening slopes, regulation of runoffs and clearing of the air. Forest communities provide important recreational and aesthetic, cognitive, educational functions, and are sources of non-forest timber products (mushrooms, berries, nuts). The use of wood for construction purposes as well as for house heating causes a significant damage to forest ecosystems.

    Ministry of Energy and Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic Renewable Energy Sources Development Bangkok 2013 Renewable Energy Sources Potential The Republic of Kyrgyzstan has high renewable energy sources (RES) potential estimated at 840,2 toe. Solar, hydroelectricity of small rivers and streams, wind energy, geothermal waters and biomass are the major types of renewable energy sources in the republic. Still, currently their practical application is insignificant, thus, RES comprise less than 1% of the country's energy mix. This is due to various factors, the key one is the weak economic incentives to RES usage. Solar Energy Advantageous geographic location and climatic conditions allow Kyrgyzstan to produce, on the average, 4,64 bln. MWh of radiant energy per year, or 23,4 kWh per square meter, moreover, the average annual sunshine duration varies from 2100 to 2900 hours by area. According to expert estimates, solar energy resources are considerable and have high potential for being used in the fuel and energy complex.
