Over the course of the last ten to fifteen years I have had the amazing good fortune to get to know and study with one our current Master Horsemen, Ms. Bettina Drummond. As a student of Nuno Oliveria, a scholar in the subject of Classical Dressage, and a perpetual seeker of a deep relationship with her horses, Bettina’s knowledge is unequalled. In 2012 she came out West with her Quarterhorse stallion to acquaint him with his “Western” heritage and to further her study of the comparisons between Classical Dressage and true Vaquero traditions and training. I had a marvelous time riding the mountains of eastern Oregon, playing with cows, and having long discussions with Bettina in comparing our western horsemanship jobs and relationships with our horses with her background in true Classical Dressage. One of my over-arching goals was to seek an answer to the question of whether or not I could bring along my horses to accomplish the jobs necessary on the ranch, but still adhere to the principles of the Classical Dressage training scale. Viva Iberica International Webshop www.webshop.viva-iberica.com THE TRADITIONAL VAQUERA SADDLE (Sometimes incorrectly termed a Vaquero saddle) The silla vaquera, or vaquera saddle, sometimes called the vaquero saddle, is the everyday saddle used for centuries by the Spanish Vaquero, the real and probably original cowboy, working in the fields and mountains of Spain. Vaquera saddles are also used for vaquero competition – or Doma Vaquera (vaquero horse training, or dressage) as well as when testing the fighting bulls and cows, called Acoso y Derribo, and in the Ferias of Spain and of course for every day country riding. The vaquera or vaquero saddle is both comfortable for the rider and the horse, designed for many hours use every day and it has a large comfortable contact area over the horse’s back. The vaquera or vaquero saddle is traditionally covered in sheepskin, held in place by leather thongs which are also used for tying equipment to the saddle, or for emergency tack repairs when working out on the range. The saddle illustrated above is a basic plain (in Spain called the Vaquera Lisa) saddle. For competition, or Doma Vaquera, it is generally preferred that the saddle is plain so the Vaquera Lisa saddle is generally used. However in Doma Vaquera the saddle can have tooled ‘buttons’, which are called ‘moteada’. See picture left for an example of a vaquera moteada saddle. Again, for doma vaquera the saddle must be black, although it can have the traditional tan leather inside the cantle/back-piece. It is also preferred that the plain vaquera / vaquero Lisa style saddle is used if the rider is wearing full chaps, called zahones in Spain. -

Riding styles of the Iberian Peninsula By Sarah Gately-Wilson Today’s equestrians adopt various styles of riding as their individual preferences. To some equestrians, riding is a competitive sport; to some it is an art, to others, simply a way of life. In the middle ages, horses were the primary mode of transportation, a weapon of war, and to royalty, an art for the high school dressage. The way the horses were ridden, then and now, depended on what purpose they were being used for. In Spain, two styles of riding were known. The knights in their heavy armour rode heavy, cold-blooded warhorses. They rode with long stirrups, their legs and feet extended down and forward with their backs braced against the high cantles of their war saddles. This style of riding was known as riding a la brida. The other style of riding was on fast, agile, hot-blooded chargers that turned quickly and were used by light cavalry and hunters. These riders had short stirrups with legs bent underneath them and were balanced on the horses back with the ability to stand up or move agily on the horse. This style is known as riding a la gineta. At one time it was considered a great accomplishment of men to be able to ride in both saddles, meaning to ride both a la brida and a la gineta. It was even marked on their gravestones! As times of war subsided, the need for the horses was in agriculture, to work cattle, to thrash grain, and for royalty, a luxury item for hunts and high school dressage.
