September 12-18, 2016 3 About the Cover Artist Kasia Bukowska Kasia Bukowska is not only an artist, but also an equestrian. Since she was three years old and had the opportunity to grab the mane of a poor pony at Griffith Park in Cali- fornia, she says, she has never let go of that dream: to ride horses and be around these amazing, graceful, and powerful animals. Kassia rode as much as I could as a child, took as many lessons as her parents would allow, and competed at as many shows as possible. Her horse ob- session took her to Poland, where I planned to pursue her career in rid- ing. However, it soon became difficult for her to do everyday activities, and she restricted to her bed for five months. Ultimately, Kasia was diagnosed with Lupus SLE and Fibromyal- gia. Today, she is still working with doctors on getting her health challenges back into remission so she can go back to spending time at the barn with her horses, training, and competing. At the moment, she pours her passion for horses into her artwork. “Art is a way for me to express myself and has always been an important part of my life, but being separated from horses is what gave me the motivation and ambition to paint my abstract pieces,” Kassia explains. “Horses set my heart free on those rough days so, even if I cannot get to the barn, I paint and draw to stay in touch with my true passion. I believe that this passion for my equine friends cap- tures their true beauty and translates it into my unique works of art. I use many medi- ums, including acrylics, spray paint, pencil, and pastels.” September 12-18, 2016 4 Kassia admits that she has been doodling on class notes and sketching on homework assignments for as long as she can remember. In high school, she dipped into stencils and spray paint and had her pieces exhibited at The Hive Gallery and The Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Stenciling is a style that she still uses in some of her more modern, retro equine pieces. Her artwork has developed over the years, and she really started focusing on her horse portraits after being diagnosed with Lupus. Considering a life without horses, she channeled her feelings onto canvas. She got an overwhelming response on Facebook when she posted some of her pieces and was delighted when people began inquir- ing about custom orders. Kassia’s inspiration for this year’s winning artwork, The Un- tamed, came to her one morning when she woke up and had an urge to paint something bold and valiant. Like a majority of her paintings, Kassia said that initially she had no idea what she wanted to paint, or even what colors to use, but she knew she needed to paint. She picked out the biggest canvas she had, laid out all her acrylics and paint brushes on a table, divided the colors into groups, and ended up picking the pile of browns. “I just had a feeling of what to paint, but nothing specific in mind. I expressed these feelings I had mustering inside me onto canvas and the result was The Untamed. The Untamed is my perspective on the Lusita- no, a dauntless and gallant spirit that is, at the same time, calm and affectionate. I see and feel all of these traits in the eye of The Untamed. Kassia’s future goal as an artist is to exhibit her work globally. She has already exhibit- ed in California and Poland and would like to travel across Europe sharing her burning love of horses with other horse lovers and art enthusiasts. As far as her riding career, she plans to compete on her Polish Warmblood jumper by the end of this year. “Some doctors say I’m crazy, but I say my love of horses keeps me going and keeps me strong,” Kassia says, “I have always dreamed of owning, training, and breeding young horses, and I’ve never had more ambition than I do now to make that happen.
