The Broadway Shows of Edward Gorey
73 Tony Gunn Florida State University, USA Tremendous Success and Terrible Failure: The Broadway Shows of Edward Gorey This article discusses the art and literature of Edward Gorey, focusing on his two Broadway shows that played concurrently in the late 1970s. The first, Dracula, was a tremendous success, running for over two years and 925 performances. The second, Gorey Stories, opened and closed on the same night for only one performance. This article submits that the reason for Dracula’s success and the failure of Gorey Stories is that Gorey’s visual aesthetic, while morbid and dark, is easily consumable by a mass audience especially when paired with show that provides a recognizable plot structure. Gorey’s narrative style, featured in Gorey Stories, is complex and can be unsettling, making the show a difficult sell for Broadway. Tony Gunn is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Theatre. Balderston play Dracula opened after five preview performances. The original production premièred in New York on October 5, 1927 in the Fulton Theatre starring Bella Lugosi in the title role. This new production was notable for two reasons. First, it starred a young and very attractive Frank Langella (Figure 1) as Dracula, a sexy rather than a terrifying vampire. Second, the production featured set and costume designs by Edward Gorey, mostly known at the time for his illustrations. -

Murfin 2017 All Rights Reserved 3 ABSTRACT This dissertation narrates the circulation and institutionalization of an emergent category of talk performance within the late-twentieth century US avant-garde through the career trajectories of three artists from disparate disciplinary backgrounds working in and around the 1970s: theatrical monologist Spalding Gray, poet David Antin, and dance artist and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer. All established themselves through more obviously discipline-coherent work before turning to extemporaneous talk as a performance strategy within the shifting critical and cultural environments of post-1960s avant-gardes. Undertaking a comparative study collecting these practices under the label talk performance, this project uncovers the processes by which these artists both resisted and relied upon disciplinary structures, and the media technologies and formats that attend those structures, to configure their work within particular arts discourses. Talk performance becomes a provocative site for understanding how minimalist interventions into formal disciplinary categories helped define the reapportionment of the overall art situation in the aftermath of the 1960s along lines of rhetorical and institutional distinction that still persist. Employing newly available multimedia archives and a historiographic approach to the various narrow disciplinary accounts of the late-twentieth-century American avant-garde that have become standard, this project recuperates traces of an unacknowledged, interdisciplinary set of talk performance practices. -

Examining Franzen’s fiction with this theoretical lens, Blanco Hidalga suggests a metanarrative quality that relates the characters in the novels to the author himself. By integrating “usually separated formal and ideological perspectives” (ix), Jonathan Franzen and the Romance of Community: Narratives of Salvation departs from established scholarly criticism, offering a fresh interpretive reading against which Franzen’s work can be approached and reconsidered. 5 The structure of the volume mirrors the foundation, development, and boundaries of Blanco Hidalga’s main argument as well as exemplifies the study’s critical potential to shed light on Franzen’s work.
