  • Beauty's Transformation of the Ugly in Gregory of Nyssa's Life of Moses
Beauty’s Transformation of the Ugly in Gregory of Nyssa’s Life of Moses Mako A. Nagasawa Originally submitted to Dr. Maximos Constas, Patristic Exegesis in the Alexandrian Tradition and Dr. Evie Holmberg, Comparative Readings in the Greek Fathers as They Relate to Plato and the Neoplatonists , Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Seminary, Fall 2018 Last modified: February 4, 2020 Introduction In this paper, I will build on the efforts of those who have shown that Gregory of Nyssa (335 – 395 AD) critically engaged the Platonic inheritance as represented by Origen and Plotinus, among others. 1 I will explore Gregory’s Life of Moses as a corrective to Origen within the Church, and as an evangelist of sorts to educated Neoplatonists outside the Church. I will do this by comparing Plotinus’ chapter on Beauty in the Enneads with Gregory’s treatment of pagan philosophy and the three theophanies in Life of Moses . The Problem of Ugliness According to Plato and Plotinus One of the difficulties for Plato and Plotinus was the problem of “ugliness.” Both Plato and Plotinus started from human experience. They observe that we find pleasing certain sights, sounds, movements, and proportions, so we call them beautiful. Plato remarked that we find human bodies – or at least some of them – beautiful.2 Why? Plotinus asks and answers the question thus: “On what principle does the architect, when he finds the house standing before him correspondent with his inner ideal of a house, pronounce it beautiful? Is it not that the house before him, the stones apart, is the inner idea stamped upon the mass of exterior matter, the indivisible exhibited in diversity?”3 For both philosophers, Beauty and Ugliness are equivalents to Good and Evil transposed into an aesthetic key.

Ugly Beauty: Chaucer’s Poetic Ecclesiology Britta B. Rowe Ivy, Virginia B.A., University of Virginia, 1990 M.A., University of Virginia, 2014 A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Virginia August, 2017 © Copyright by Britta B. Rowe All Rights Reserved August 2017 i Abstract Over the last several decades, the “religious turn” in Chaucer studies has opened up numerous avenues for analysis of Chaucer’s poetics without completely resolving questions about their specifically Christian character, or lack thereof. Approaches to answering such questions include biographical analysis, which in Chaucer’s case seems least likely to yield substantial conclusions: we simply don’t have enough biographical data to be confident that Chaucer held strongly to one, or another, or no version of Christian faith. Our limited sources of knowledge about Chaucer’s distinctly secular professional life certainly give us no basis for confident assertions about his own personal piety. Unlike his contemporary John Lydgate, for example, Chaucer was no monk. On the other hand, given the numerous, lively and vigorous forms of lay piety in Chaucer’s era, his lack of religious vocation and/or sacerdotal ordination is not per se a limiting factor on the possibility that his poetics is robustly Christian at a deep philosophical level. One important movement of lay piety, founded on protest against ecclesial corruption, was inspired in large part by the indignation and influence of another Chaucer contemporary, John Wyclif, and this movement has been the focus of a substantial body of scholarship over the last several decades.
