  • 2010Year-In-Review
Mission The USAWA was formed to continue the long standing tradition of old-time weightlifters like Eugen Sandow, Louis Cyr, Arthur Saxon, Hermann Goerner, Warren Lincoln Travis, and many others. We strive to preserve the history of the original forms of weightlifting, which in the past has been referred to as ―odd lifting‖. Many of the lifts we perform are based on stage acts or challenge lifts of old-time strongmen. History The USAWA was organized in 1987 and was a charter member of the International All-Round Weightlifting Association. The USAWA has over 150 recognized lifts and 8000 plus records, so any strength athlete can find their niche. We have a drug testing program to encourage drug free lifting. Numerous local meets and a National competition are held each year to find true ―all-round‖ weightlifters. Without the support, patience and guidance of the following people, this study would not have been complete. It is to them that I owe my deepest gratitude and respect. • To Co-Advisors Eden Torres and Catherine Squires who tirelessly worked with me through multiple drafts of my work, provided wisdom, knowledge, and commitment to the highest standards which inspired and motivated me to push myself when even I believed I had reached my limits. • To Dissertation Committee Chair Miriam Duchess Harris for not only being a great sounding board and intellectual collaborator, but being a remarkable friend. You are a true inspiration as I continue to develop the tools that I need to maintain life as an engaged Black feminist politics scholar and mother. • To Dissertation Committee Member Rose Brewer I thank you for being such a remarkable example of an activist scholar you give me hope that it is possible. • To my Doctoral Preliminary Exam Warriors Reina Rodriguez, Daniel Topete, and Rene Esparza thank you for providing feedback on my works-in-progress and sustaining my spirit through that grueling process.

Esprit de Corps A History of North American Bodybuilding James Woycke Copyright c 2016 Esprit de Corps i Foreword Years ago, while researching another topic, Jim Woycke met body- builder photographer Tony Lanza who recounted many first-hand ac- counts of the early years of bodybuilding. Looking for more informa- tion, Jim discovered that, apart from some biographies of bodybuilders, there was little material on the sport, and less about Montreal brothers Ben and Joe Weider, founders of modern bodybuilding. Consequently, Jim resolved to write a comprehensive history. He researched the topic exhaustively in Canadian and American archives and libraries, and conducted several interviews. He met with Ben Weider in Montreal, who allowed him to read and photocopy all Weider magazines dating from 1940, and to quote from, and reprint photographs. Jim is the only researcher in the field to have read French language sources, uncovering Adrien Gagnon’s role in bodybuilding, especially his bitter rivalry with the Weiders.
