Umass Amherst Department of Music & Dance Presents Tasso at Ferrara
UMass Amherst Department of Music & Dance presents Tasso at Ferrara – La Compagnia del Madrigale This concert highlights the distinguished musical legacy of late-Renaissance poet Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), with an emphasis on madrigal settings composed by musicians associated with the Este court of Ferrara (Italy), where Tasso spent a substantial part of his career. The concert is inspired by Prof. Ricciardi’s Tasso in Music Project (www.tassomusic.org), an NEH- funded digital edition of the early modern settings of Torquato Tasso’s poetry. It is also a sequel to the Tasso and Music Symposium and Concerts (https://www.umass.edu/music/tasso-and- music-symposium-concerts), hosted by UMass in April 2020, which convened music historians, literary scholars, and performers from North America and Europe to offer new perspectives on Tasso and the music of his time. The concert has been made possible thanks to generous funding from the Department of Music and Dance and the College of Fine Arts and Humanities. Dresdner Philharmonie The Dresden Philharmonic can look back on 150 years of history as the orchestra of Saxony’s capital Dresden. When the so-called “Gewerbehaussaal” opened on 29 November 1870, the citizens of the city were given the opportunity to organise major orchestra concerts. Philharmonic concerts were held regularly starting in 1885; the orchestra adopted its present name in 1923. In its first decades, composers such as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Strauss conducted the Dresdner Philharmonie with their own works. The first desks were presided over by outstanding concertmasters such as Stefan Frenkel, Simon Goldberg and the cellists Stefan Auber and Enrico Mainardi. From 1934, Carl Schuricht and Paul van Kempen led the orchestra; van Kempen in particular guided the Dresden Philharmonic to top achievements. All of Bruckner’s symphonies were first performed in their original versions, which earned the orchestra the reputation of a “Bruckner orchestra” and brought renowned guest conductors such as Hermann Abendroth, Eduard van Beinum, Fritz Busch, Eugen Jochum, Joseph Keilbert, Erich Kleiber, Hans Knappertsbusch and Franz Konwitschny to the rostrum. After 1945 and into the 1990s, Heinz Bongartz, Horst Förster, Kurt Masur (from 1994 also honorary conductor), Günther Herbig, Herbert Kegel, Jörg-Peter Weigle and Michel Plasson were the principal conductors. In recent years, conductors such as Marek Janowski, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Michael Sanderling have shaped the orchestra. As of season 2019/2020, Marek Janowski has returned to the Dresden Philharmonic as principal conductor and artistic director. Its home is the highly modern concert hall inaugurated in April 2017 in the Kulturpalast building in the heart of the historic old town. -

Mozart Complete Fortepiano Concertos Author: Jed Distler
A1 Mozart Complete Fortepiano Concertos Author: Jed Distler Recorded in 2004-06, this Mozart piano concerto cycle first appeared on the small Pro Musica Camerata laBel. In the main, fortepianist Viviana Sofronitsky (stepdaughter of the legendary Russian pianist Vladimir), conductor Tadeusz Karolak and the Musica Antiqua Collegium Varsoviense offer less consistent satisfaction in comparison with complete period instrument sets from Bilson/ Gardiner/English Baroque Soloists (DG) and Immerseel/Anima Eterna Orchestra (Channel Classics). The strings prove alarmingly uneven: scrawny-toned in K503ʼs Rondo, hideously ill-tuned in K595ʼs first movement, yet firmly focused in the sparsely scored K413, 414 and 415 group and the youthful first four concertos, where Sofronitskyʼs nimBle harpsichord mastery oozes sparkle and wit. However, her fortepiano artistry yields mixed results. Her heavy-handed articulation, pounded out Alberti Basses and crude down-Beat accents roB certain Rondo movements of their prerequisite animation and lilt, such as those in K271, 450, 459, 482 and 595. And when you juxtapose her Brusque, dynamically unvaried treatment of the latterʼs Larghetto with Bilsonʼs graceful lyricism, her faster Basic tempo actually seems slower. Orchestrally speaking, little sense of long line and amorphous melody/ accompaniment textures yield rudderless slow movements in K271 and K456 while, at the same time, the rich contrapuntal writing in the Adagio of K488 could hardly By more viBrant and roBust; the first Bassoonist really shines here and in the Allegro assaiʼs rapid solo licks. Strange how percussively the Busy passagework in the outer movements of the E flat Double Concerto (K365) registers, whereas the more difficult-to-Balance Triple Concerto (K242) Benefits from superior microphone placement. -
