Focus groups identified non-burdensome ways that project partners were already collecting or could easily collect information to quantify and track impact. This feedback was developed into quantitative surveys that were administered via partners in 2018 and analyzed in early 2019. Forty one percent of City of Design partners collected or are planning to collect data related to their project’s impact. At this early stage of the work, event attendance and demographic data is easiest to collect, and only three partners were able to measure the impact of programming on changes in perspective, thoughts on participation, or building usage. An additional three partners collected data on investment or revenue from public and private sources. Data collection is ongoing. Wherever impact is cited within this report, it has been sourced via these partner data collection efforts. The National Museum of the Great Lakes tells the incredible story of our Great Lakes through over 300 genuine artifacts, a number of powerful audiovisual displays and 40 hands-on interactive exhibits including the Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship. The tales told here span hundreds of years, from the fur traders in the 1600s to the Underground Railroad operators in the 1800s, the rum runners in the 1900s, to the sailors on the thousand-footers sailing today. The theme of the Great Lakes as a Powerful Force runs through all of these stories and will create a lifelong interest in all who visit from 5 – 95 years old. Toledo and the surrounding area are full of early American History and great places to visit. The Battle of Fallen Timbers, the War of 1812, Fort Meigs and the early shipbuilding cities of Perrysburg and Maumee promise to please those who have an interest in local history. A visit to the world-class Toledo Art Museum, the fine dining along the river, with brew pubs and the world famous Tony Packo’s restaurant, will make for a great visit. -

Benjamin Woodworth by Eloise Kelly (Courtesy of Eloise Lavin, edited by Joanne Steckling) Benjamin Woodworth was born in Scituate, Massachusetts, Jan 13, 178?1 He was a man of many trades, a large bluff man with a big voice, a carpenter, builder, stone cutter, brick maker and an architect of sorts. He came to Detroit in 1803 where he thought there would be more demand for his services. General Hull had been appointed the first Governor of Michigan and his house, as he put it, “was not befitting a man of his importance.” He asked Ben Woodworth if he could build one more suitable for him. When Ben told him he could but he would need some experienced men to help him—the Governor said he and his “cabinet” were going to see the President on government business, and asked him to go with them, and then to go home and find men to bring back to help him. They could meet at a designated place and return with them to Detroit. Mr. Woodworth found two men he had worked with, joined the Governor’s party and reached Detroit in 1804. The first thing he did after they returned was to locate and lease a piece of land with clay on it, set up a kiln, and began making bricks with which to build the Governor’s mansion. By 1807 he had completed a frame house for himself on Randolph Street and Woodbridge, and he married Rachel Dix. By then the bricks were ready to use and he built a mansion for the Governor and then built a brick building for the Detroit Bank on the northwest corner of Jefferson and Randolph Streets. -

I found a package of old and yellowed papers, tied carefully together, which, on opening, I found to 'be the Key to the answer to a question I had often asked my father when I was a child; it was, "Haven't you some cousins, papa?" (None were ever known to me.) His answ,er always was what a busy man's usually is, and suggested he didn't have time to explain, "Yes, lots of them, but they're away out West." By the contents of this package I found father had four uncles and three aUllts who married. That suggested there might have been lots of cousins, and I made the-endeavor to find out about them and succeeded far beyond my expecta tion. You will find the result if you begin at the family of Benjamin2 and follow it out. Only one own cousin of his was then (1903) living. In that search Mr. Rix helped me, as he has also helped in the records of this book by compiling and sending· me all that he had of this branch of the family. -
