Ben Woodworth, of Detroit, was an ardent sympathizer with the patriot cause and expended much of his time and money in the movement. He was a noted citizen of Detroit, where he commanded an artillery company in the War of 1812. The long room at the Steamboat Hotel was the scene of many patriotic meetings and he boarded many of the troops and officers at his own expense. After the Steamboat Hotel burned down in 1848, he removed to St. Clair, where he resumed his profession as a builder. He died in St. Clair in 1871, nearly 91 years. His only surviving child is Mrs. A.J. Cummings, of this city." Biographical Sketch in the Detroit Post, Sept. 6, 1869 (DPL:BHC Call #SB/Burton/24A:57) "A Look at the Past Speaking, a few days ago, of the early pioneers of Detroit, the name of Benjamin Woodworth was overlooked. "Uncle Ben" as he is familiarly called, emigrated from Scituate, Massachusetts in 1806, and some time afterward, married Miss Dix, a native of Grosse Isle. The latter died in 1856. Mr. Woodworth was the builder of and kept the old "Steamboat Hotel" for more than 25 years. It stood at the corner of Woodbridge and Randolph Streets, and for a long time was the great hotel of the Northwest." "Just below the Council House, and on the corner of Woodbridge and Randolph Strees was Woodworth's Hotel, owned by Benjamin Woodworth. He was a rather short man and full bodied. I remember that our dogs used to steal the meat intended for the hotel and the folks had some contention over the matter. Mr. Woodworth's brother, Samuel, wrote The Old Oaken Bucket. I did not know Mrs. Woodworth, but they had a daugher Ann whom I slightly remember." Death mentioned in Port Huron Daily Times Nov. 11 1874 From History of Oakland County, p.30: "Uncle Ben" Woodworth "In town 4, north of range 11 east, now called Oakland, the first purchase was made by Benjamin Woodworth and William Russell, on the 16th of March 1819. They entered a part of section 33. The history of father Russell, as he was familiarly called, is truth itself, candid and unassuming. He was an example of sociality and benevolence, upright and just in all his ways. Benjamin Woodworth, "Uncle Ben," as he was known by all who ever stopped at the "Steamboat Hotel" in Detroit, had a heart full of kindness and a hand ever ready to help the distressed. He was the constant friend of Oakland county, and he never forgot or forsook her early inhabitants."
