This evening’s artists Redlands Bowl Concerto Competition Finalists

Emily Rosenberg (, CA) Soprano Emily Rosenberg has been recognized as a “spirited actress” with a “rounded and lyri - cal voice, well under her control” by Platea Magazine, and “could be part of the program at any established international theater.” This season, Emily made her role debut as Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto with Jerusalem Lyric Opera. Other recent highlights include an appear - ance as Lieschen in Korngold’s Der Ring des Polykrates with Numi Opera, a return to Pacific Opera Project for their “super” take on The Magic Flute, singing the title role of The Cunning Little Vixen with Opera Steamboat, and her Chicago debut originating the role of the Narrator in the world premiere of For Those in Peril, a new opera by Francis L. Lynch. Emily has captivated audiences in multiple portrayals of Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, with performances in Los Angeles, Prague, and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Ad - ditional roles include Laetitia (The Old Maid and the Thief), Mabel (The Pirates of Penzance), Amore (Orfeo ed Euridice), Barbarina (Le nozze di Figaro), Papagena (Die Zauberflöte), An - nina (La Traviata), Suor Genovieffa (Suor Angelica), and covering Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), and Zerlina (Don Giovanni). Emily made her Boston Symphony Hall debut in 2015 as soloist in the Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY world tour. Emily holds degrees in Vocal Performance and Professional Music with a focus in Songwriting from Berklee College of Music. A native of Chicago, Emily is currently based in Los Angeles, where her sound is sought after for commercial and film score recordings in addition to opera and concert producing organizations.

Alexander Hobbs, Violin (Los Angeles, CA) Alexander Hobbs recently performed a with Noah Bendix-Balgley, the first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic. He also made his Carnegie Hall recital debut in summer 2019. He is the prizewinner of numerous competitions, as well as an active concert performer. Alexander’s competition prizes include Second Prize, the highest award given, at theOsaka International Competition in 2013, Second Prize at the Na - tionals, Student MusicConcours of Japan in 2011, as well as many others. Alexander has appeared as soloist with multiple orchestras in - cluding performances with the Japan Classical Orchestra, the NHK Philharmonic Orchestra Ensemble, and the Japan String Teachers As - sociation Orchestra. Conductors whom Alexander has worked with include Esa-Pekka Salo - nen, Ludovic Morlot, Matthias Pintscher, Hans Graff, Paolo Bortolameolli, Edo de Waart, Hugh Wolff, Felix Mildenberger, James Conlon, Robert Spano and Valery Gergiev. Alexan - der’s solo performances in his native Japan include the concert halls Kioi Hall, Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall and Suntory Hall. At the age of three, Alexander enrolled in the Toho School of Music for children where he commenced his formal violin studies at the age of five, under the tutelage of Asako Iwasawa. At the age of eleven, Alexander earned the honor of serving as concertmaster for a performance of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of the conductor Myung-Whun Chung. The following year, Alexander was chosen to perform at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Italy, as part of the World Heritage Festival. Alexander has also attended the prestigious Aspen Music Festival for multiple seasons beginning in 2012. Alexander has participated in master classes with several renowned artists and pedagogues, including Andras Keller, Zakhar Bron, Leon Spierer and Augustin Dumay. Alexander has also served as concertmaster of Toho Gakuen Academy Orchestra and YMF Debut Chamber Or - chestra. In May, 2020, Alexander completed the Bachelor of Music degree at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, where he studied with Robert Lipsett. Alexander cur - rently studies with Pierre Amoyal, a world-renowned violinist and a professor at the Mozar - teum University.

Eric Gan, Piano (Foster City, CA) Born in 2003, Eric Gan started learning piano at the age of five and currently studies with Professor Ning An. He won First Prize at the Los Angeles Young Musician Inter - national Competition in 2019, and is a three-year winner of the US Chopin Foundation Scholarship (2017-2019).He has also won top prizes at the Lansum International Piano Competition and the Orange County Rising Stars Piano Competition. At the age of nine, Eric gave his first solo recital at the Steinway Piano Gallery in San Francisco and has continued to give annual performances. He has performed in venues such as the Zipper Hall in Los Angeles and Steinway Piano Gallery in Seattle. Eric has also attended master classes with renowned pianist Anton Nel and Steinway Artist Mikhail Yanovitsky. Since 2017, he has held annual benefit concerts, raising funds for underprivileged students and helping victims of the Camp Fire in Northern .

Henry Woolf, Flute (Los Angeles, CA) Flutist Henry Woolf made his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 15 as first prize winner of the Alexander and Buono International Flute Competition. He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he stud - ied with Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Flute Jeffrey Khaner. At Cur - tis, Woolf was frequently featured on the student recital series and participated in multiple touring projects including a nine city European tour as well as a chamber orchestra tour of the US.Since graduating from Curtis in 2018, Woolf has played with the Los Angeles Philhar - monic, Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra, Artosphere Festival Or - chestra, and Orpheus at Mannes Chamber Orchestra,among others. In October of 2019 Woolf was invited to compete in the Maxence larrieu International Flute Competition in Nice, France and in 2020 was invited to the Sarasota Music Festival. Woolf currently studies with Denis and Erin Bouriakov at UCLA.

Anaïs Feller, Violin (San Diego, CA) Anais Feller (14) studies violin at the Music Academy of the Colburn School in Los Angeles, under the tutelage of Martin Beaver. At age 10, she made her orches - tra debut with the California Chamber Orchestra in Koblenz, Ger - many. As a soloist, Anais has collaborated with orchestras such as the Plano Symphony Orchestra, San Angelo Orchestra, and Memphis Repertory Orchestra. She won the grand prize at the 2019 Young Artist Competition at Collin County, Texas and garnered top prizes at the Fort Worth Symphony Young Artist Competition, Vernell Gregg Young Artists Competition, International Academy of Music concerto competition, Bravo International Music Festival competition and at the 2020 Southern California Philharmonic Young Artist Concerto competition. Anais has at - tended music festivals in the US, Germany, Italy, Spain and Greece. Shehad master classes with Leonardo Kavakos, David Kim, Cho-Liang Lin, Chee Yun and JinJoo Cho. Her favorite concert experience was playing Bach Double Violin Concerto with the renowned violinist Ray Chen in 2020. Anais was previously a competitive ballet dancer and now dances mostly modern and lyrical.

Vijay Venkatesh, Piano Hailed by the Herald-Tribune for his “dazzling pianism verging on the impossible, effortless technical command and authority with a sense of poetry and refinement that belies his years,” Indian-American pi - anist Vijay Venkatesh has been recognized on three continents as a pianist with profound musicianship, sparkling pianism and an innate sense of partnership. Vijay has rapidly established a major interna - tional reputation as top prizewinner in the San Jose, Seattle, Zimmerli, World Piano, and Waring International Piano Competitions. He has also been named a Davidson Fellow Laureate at the Library of Con - gress, USC Thornton's Discovery Scholar, Grand Prize Winner of the Los Angeles Music Center’s Spotlight Awards and featured on NPR’s “From the Top” with host Christopher O'Riley. In 2007, he was a winner of the Redlands Bowl Young Artists Com - petition. Highlights of Mr. Venkatesh's upcoming seasons include debuts with the Columbus Sym - phony with Erina Yashima in Saint-Saëns Concerto No.2, Rogue Valley Symphony with Martin Majkut in Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto, the LaGrange Symphony with Richard Prior in Beethoven’s Concerto No. 5 and at the Le Salon Musiques with Chopin’s Concerto No.1. Venkatesh will also return to the Redlands Bowl with the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra with conductor Roger Kalia in Beethoven Concerto No. 5. Additionally, Venkatesh has solo recitals and chamber music with the Vieness Piano Duo at the Naples Grand Piano Series, Covington Recital Series, Lancaster Performing Arts Center, L’ermitage Foundation, the Music Guild, Sarasota Artists Series, Second City Chamber Series, Summer Stars Series and a concert tour of the Midwest through Allied Concert Services and a recital tour of India through the South Asian Symphony Foundation. An immersive and versatile soloist, Mr. Venkatesh has performed extensively across the and Europe as soloist with the symphony orchestras of Seattle, Vienna, Sara - sota, Redlands, Roanoke, Eastern Connecticut, YMF Debut, USC Thornton, IU Jacobs, UC Irvine, Pasadena, Rio Hondo, South Coast, Transylvania, and the Brevard Music Center. He has collaborated with preeminent conductors such as Jeffrey Kahane, Ludovic Morlot, David Lockington, David Stewart Wiley, Toshiyuki Shimada, Ken Lam, Michael Repper, Frank Fetta, and more. Mr. Venkatesh has performed at Merkin Hall in New York, Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess series, and at the Aspen, Brevard, Banff, Newport, Redlands Bowl, Sarasota, and Vienna Music Festivals. As recipient of the inaugural Parnassus Society Prize, he performed in recital at the Soka Performing Arts Center. An active chamber musician, Venkatesh has appeared eight times on Le Salon de Musiques at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles and tours as the Vieness Piano Duo with his wife and pianist, Eva Schaumkell. Together, they’ve performed over 40 recitals such as the InConcert Series, the Trinity Concert Series, Le Salon de Musiques, L’ermitage Foundation, Masters in the Chapel Series, Waring Gala, and the Kultur unter'm Dach series in Germany. As pianist in the Aristeia Trio, Gold Medalists of the Frances Walton International Chamber Music Competition, they embarked on a 30-concert tour of Washington, appeared twice on KING-FM 89.1 FM, and have been featured on the Camerata Musica recital series and at the Irvine Performing Arts Center. Originally from California, Mr. Venkatesh is an Artist Diploma candidate at the Colburn School in Los Angeles with Fabio Bidini. He holds degrees from USC Thornton and IU Jacobs School of Music, where he was a recipient of the Barbara and David Jacobs Fellowship under the tutelage of Norman Krieger and André Watts. Venkatesh previously studied with Jeffrey Kahane and has received artistic guidance from Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Menahem Pressler, and Murray Perahia.

Roger Kalia, Competition Conductor A dynamic and innovative presence both on and off the podium, In - dian-American conductor Roger Kalia is a respected collaborator with orchestras and artists alike, known for his eloquent and compelling interpretations, and for bringing a “fresh view to classical music” (The Republic). A five-time recipient of the Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award (2013, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021), Kalia is the Music Director of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony NH (Symphony New Hampshire), and Orchestra Santa Monica. He is also the Co-Founder and Music Director of the celebrated Lake George Music Festival in upstate New York, which celebrates its ten- year anniversary in August 2021 (postponed due to Covid-19 from August 2020). As the sixth music director of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Kalia reimagined the 2020-21 season with great success. His inaugural concert as music director featured the world premiere of Paul Dooley’s River City, which celebrated both the Philharmonic and the city of Evansville. Kalia’s innovative programming has included works by living composers such as Jessie Montgomery, Jessica Meyer, T.J. Cole, and Reena Esmail as well as unique collaborations and projects with Evansville Civic Theatre, Historic Bosse Field, the Evansville World War 2 Museum, Ballet Indiana, and tango dancers from the University of Evansville. Kalia was recently recognized in the League of American Orchestras’ Symphony Magazine as one of five first-year music directors for his innovative work during the pandemic. With Symphony NH, the spirit of diversity in the arts was celebrated with works by Sarah Kirkland Snider, George Walker, William Grant-Still, and Osvaldo Golijov as well as regional partnerships with Mayor Jim Donchess and Indian Carnatic musicians. Kalia also introduced a new online series entitled "Granite State Conversations with Roger Kalia,” which highlighted different New Hampshire artists, civic and business leaders in conversations with Maestro Kalia. With Orchestra Santa Monica, Kalia has commissioned composer Derrick Spiva to compose a series of short pieces in an art film project titled “Santa Monica Black Life Ex - pressed through Music, Visuals, and Narrative,” which combine musicians, artists, and local historians from the Santa Monica area. These commissions were made possible through the Art of Recovery grant from Santa Monica Cultural Affairs. Kalia’s 2021-22 season highlights include his subscription debut with the Louisiana Phil - harmonic Orchestra and return engagements with Poland’s Szczecin Philharmonic and the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra at the Redlands Bowl. Amongst the orchestras that he has appeared with are the National Symphony Orchestra at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Chicago Sinfonietta at Symphony Hall, the symphony orchestras of Lima, Long Beach, Adrian, Bakersfield, Great Falls, Owensboro, Redlands, Spokane, and Wheeling as well as the Boise Philharmonic, Spartanburg Philharmonic, and Camarada Chamber Orchestra. A versatile communicator, Kalia has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including singers Shayna Steele and Steve Lippia, Electronic Dance Music (EDM) duo MAKO, singer/songwriter Randy Newman, Philadelphia Orchestra concertmaster David Kim, violinists Glenn Dicterow, Nikki and Timothy Chooi, and Sphinx Competition winner Annelle Gregory, percussionist Lisa Pegher, pianists Fei-Fei Dong and Misha Dichter, the B-52s, PROJ - ECT Trio, the Brooklyn-based electronic Indie band Balún, actor Jack Black, and visual artist and astronomer Dr. José Francisco Salgado. Kalia is a staunch supporter of music education. His tenure as Music Director of the Youth Orchestra was highly praised and included numerous commissioned works and a three-city tour of China in June 2016, marking the orchestra’s second interna - tional tour and its first to Asia. Kalia has conducted numerous youth and collegiate orchestras including the 2021 Georgia All-State Symphony Orchestra, the 2018 Missouri All-State Sym - phony Orchestra, The Colburn Orchestra, California State University Fullerton Symphony Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Irvine Seraphim Symphony. He has created family and educational concerts in a variety of concert formats, and has collaborated on the education platform with such renowned artists and ensembles as Cirque de la Sym - phony, Orange County’s Festival Ballet Theater, speed painter Dan Dunn, and the Magic Circle Mime Co. Furthermore, Kalia has also served as an instructor of conducting at USC’s Thornton School of Music. A creator as well as a communicator, in 2011, Kalia and two of his colleagues co- founded the Lake George Music Festival, an original, ground-breaking, two-week, nationally recognized music festival that presents cutting-edge artists and composers performing clas - sical and new music, traditional and experimental concerts and recitals of various sizes, open rehearsals, informational talks and a variety of community outreach programs. As Music Di - rector, Kalia programs and conducts all orchestral and large ensemble concerts, including the popular “Sounds of Our Time,” series (which he created and curates) highlighting con - nections between popular and orchestral music though multimedia concert formats, as well as the festival’s Family Concert Series. He also programs and conducts the “Uncorked” con - cert series, creating an immersive experience for the audience by performing chamber operas in unique settings. In 2018, Kalia introduced Symphony Happy Hours, which are informative chats about music that take place in local breweries and bars. A native of New York State, Roger Kalia holds degrees from Indiana University, the Uni - versity of Houston and SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music. His primary mentors include David Effron, Arthur Fagen, and Franz Anton Krager. Among his honors and awards are a 2019 Solti Foundation Elizabeth Buccheri Opera Residency with Lyric Opera of Chicago where he assisted Sir Andrew Davis for Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, a Project Inclusion Conducting Freeman Fellowship with the Chicago Sinfonietta, and an American Academy of Conducting Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival with Robert Spano. In 2011, Kalia won Second Prize in the Memphis Symphony International Conducting Competition, which led to his debut with the orchestra the following season and launched his professional career. Kalia recently stepped down at the end of the 2019-20 season as Music Director of California’s Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, and as Associate Conductor of Pacific Symphony, a post he was promoted to in 2019 after serving as Assistant Conductor since the 2015-16 season. Earlier posts were with the Young Musicians Foundation (YMF) Debut Orchestra, the Charlotte Symphony, and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (IN). NEXT EVENT OF THE SEASON Friday, July 2, 2021 – 8:00 pm Pacific Mambo Orchestra GRAMMY® Winner the Pacific Mambo Orchestra (a.k.a. the PMO) is a 20 piece, San Francisco-based musical group leading the rebirth of the Latin Big Band Sound. The PMO uses the traditions of the classic mambo-craze orchestras of the 1950s to deliver their original music and clever, modern arrangements of hit songs. Currently, the only fully active Latin Big Band on the West Coast of the United States, this elite group of the Bay Area’s finest musicians performs in both English and Spanish. SMOKING: By a City of Redlands Ordinance, no smoking or vaping is permitted at Redlands Bowl performances. SEATING: No seats may be reserved by leaving items unattended for any program by ruling of the City Council. Seating is not permitted in the orchestra pit area. CAMERAS: No filming, recording or photographing is permitted without prior written consent of the artists and Redlands Bowl Performing Arts.
