From the outstretched hand in “Janet’s Repentance,” through the hands “that have long ago mingled with the soil” in Adam Bede, to the clasped “little hands in love” in The Mill on the Floss, these three works are saturated by haptic imagery and interaction (Eliot, Adam Bede 518 and Eliot, The Mill on the Floss 483).
