Students got together, went online, and voted. The result? Your new NAIT Students’ Association Executive. There are some new faces, and some people returning for a sec- ond kick at the can. Moving from his role of Vice President Aca- demic into the coveted President’s office is Timothy Jobs. For Jobs, it’s all about serving the students. “We’re going into some interesting times with budget cuts,” Jobs said. “So it’s an opportunity to use my experience to help students.” Jobs will bring to his new position his experience dealing with student academic issues, and his past interactions with influential people on campus. Sadly, as Jobs enters the pres- ident’s role, it will be the last we see of the presidential toque, which has been worn by out going president Geoff Tate. Another current executive member, Tessa Cocchio, is mak- ing the move from Vice President External into Jobs’ former role of V.P. Academic. “I’m really excited for that [face time] with students, because right now I don’t get to do that a lot,” said Cocchio. During her tenure as V.P. External, Cochio dealt more with administration at NAIT and at the provincial level. As for the challenges with the new position, Cocchio’s efforts to learn the academic rules and regulations might be her biggest task. Fitzner explains that one factor leading to the for- mat change was the uneven playing field seen across many local races. “A lot of areas had their own tracks and you’d get all kinds of different quality,” he said. “Some were old, some new, some wood, some metal, some plastic. So we wanted to even out the playing field.” NAIT’s advanced woodworking team created 1,500 feet of track, each about 32 feet long, four feet high and elevated. “Some projects are really fun to do and this one was fun to do,” said Leo Walch, a woodworking tech- nician involved with the track building. MOVIE REVIEW On the edge of your seat By Graham McCANN Mel Gibson makes his return to the screen after an eight years hiatus with the thriller, Edge of Darkness. Based on the 1985/86 British television serial by the same name, Gib- son plays Boston detective Thomas Craven, who is thrust into a furious investigation after his daughter is murdered on his front porch by masked gunmen. Doesn’t add up Before firing, the gunmen scream out Thomas and his daughter’s family name to get their attention, leading Cra- ven to assume that the killers were after him instead of his daughter due to him being on the police force. However, this is until evidence doesn’t add up. He finds a pistol and Geiger counter in his daughter’s belongings, which he uses and realizes that a lock of hair he took off his daughter is irradiated. The beginning and set up for the film, the murder, is the weakest point of the movie. Gibson’s character is understand- ably upset, but Gibson conveys this emotion in a very uncon- vincing manner, until later in the film.
