The Sportsman of the Year Dinner is more than a fundraiser. It is an evening of recognition for the hard work and dedication of a number of Calgary athletes, coaches, sports administrators and volunteers. Tonight we are honouring Bob Vickers as our 2011 Sportsman of the Year. For over 30 years Bob has worked tirelessly with disabled skiers. It is with great pleasure that we recognize as Male and Female Athletes of the Year, Cheryl Bernard and Jon Montgomery, two Olympians who have brought honour to our country, our city and themselves through their efforts at the Vancouver Olympics. These two athletes were selected by the Calgary Media. We are also honouring ten Athletic Leaders in our city who have put in countless hours to make sure that our athletes in Calgary, be they novices or elite athletes, have the opportunity to have fun and compete successfully. The Booster Club would also like to thank our major sponsors, WinSport, Taylor Creative, Frank Sisson, and The Calgary Stampeder Football Club. We also wish to thank our partners; The Calgary Flames, The Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association, The City of Calgary, The Father Whelihan Group, Acorn Graphics, The City of Calgary Parks Foundation, The Talisman Centre, The University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Portrait Event Imaging and McPherson Management. Our mandate is to support amateur sport in Calgary and without the assistance of these organizations we could not fulfill that mandate. Finally, I would be remiss in not thanking the Directors of the Calgary Booster Club, without whose hard work this evening would not be possible. My best wishes to all, and I hope you enjoy this evening. congratulations to all athletes The Calgary Winter Club is proud to have supported amateur sports for the past 50 years! Congratulations to this year's honourees: Robert Vickers, Jon Montgomery, Cheryl Bernard, Bryce Paton, Terry Dolan, Thomas Langlois, Richard Frey, Jack Gregory, Michael Garland, Jodi Flanagan, Greg Peterson, Frank Lilley and Pat Clayton. Ed Stelmach Office of the Premier, Legislature Building, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T5K 2B6 Telephone (780) 427-2251 Fax (780) 427-1349 4 OFFICE OF THE MAYOR DAVE BRONCONNIER, MAYOR A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR NAHEED NENSHI On behalf of my City Council colleagues and the citizens of Calgary it is my privilege to welcome all of you to the 58th Annual Sportsman of the Year gala hosted by the Calgary Booster Club. Since its inception, this gala has recognized prominent Calgarians who have achieved excellence in their chosen sport and who have graciously shared their knowledge with others. This year’s recipients are no exception. We all watched with the joy as the Male and Female Athletes of the year, Jon Montgomery and Cheryl Bernard, won medals at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver/Whistler. Both of them have used their celebrity to introduce the sports of skeleton and curling to hundreds of young Calgarians. Skiing has long been the passion of Bob Vickers, this year’s Sportsman of the Year. He has spent decades on the slopes, teaching newcomers and instructors alike how to improve their techniques. But his true legacy lies in his efforts to ensure that all people can ski, even if they have significant disabilities. His dedication to some of our most vulnerable citizens is truly admirable. Tonight’s gala also honours several Athlete Leaders in our community. Whether they are organizing sports as diverse as baseball,
