The graphic elements of the extraordinary limited edition version have been kept especially narrow to optimize readability of the tachymeter for measuring speed during motorsports. The iconic hole- punched design of the fine leather strap, with its distinctive red decorative stitching, is a reference to the first motorsports watch. The shape of the dial and hands is based on the legendary predecessor of Porsche Design Timepieces, the Chronograph I.

‘GOOD DESIGN ONLY EXISTS IN CONJUNCTION WITH ENGINEERING.’

– Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, creator of Porsche Design and the famous 911 sports car. ABOUT ANDIAL

To be successful takes more than just being good, and to become part of the culture requires a lasting contribution. On both counts, ANDIAL rose above the crowd of pretenders to forge a distinctive identity in their spe- cialized field of motorsport. Born of casual conversation between Arnold Wagner, Alwin Springer and Dieter Inzenhofer back in 1974, the partner- ship that came to be known as ANDIAL initially suffered from the usual growing pains of a young company seeking a unique path. But the three individuals learned to work together, to come together as a team, and found their true medium in the competitive arena of American motorsports.

ANDIAL became much more than a shop that merely wrenched engine rebuilds for its client teams. It also contributed an expertise in the unique challenges of the North American circuits, especially when compared to those in Europe, and ANDIAL’s experience, and willing- ness to take a fresh approach to solving a problem, also allowed the firm to extract the full potential from the turbocharged flat-six powerplant used in the Porsche 962. The time and research were well compensated by victory after victory on the national stage, and this helped build an extremely strong bond between ANDIAL and Porsche Motorsport. This led to collab- oration on a variety of projects, and it was appropriate that Alwin Springer was named President of Porsche Motorsport North America in 1996.

ANDIAL ventured on with road cars, rally projects, and events such as Pikes Peak with continued success, ensuring that even after 42 years their name is secured in Porsche history. ‘Many of us grew up watching the ANDIAL-powered Porsche 962 and race cars competing and winning championship after championship.

ANDIAL marks an important part of Porsche’s customer racing in North America. The founders and their team laid the foundation for the customer racing support program that Porsche Motorsport North America has been operating since then, which enables race customers to focus on their programs and not have to worry about developing race cars.

We at Porsche Motorsport North America are very proud to carry the brand and the values of the owners into the future. The ‘ANDIAL FIVE,’ the five GT3 Cup 4.0 ANDIAL Limited Edition cars, mark the first generation of new ANDIAL cars. The owners of these cars not only have a special piece of fine automotive history but also a great machine to enjoy on the North American race tracks.

The Porsche Design ANDIAL Limited Edition timepiece reflects and shares ANDIAL’s superbly precise craftsmanship in arenas where success is measured in both split seconds and in endurance.’

– Jens Walther President & CEO Porsche Motorsport North America, Inc. ANDIAL FOUNDER ARNOLD WAGNER

ANDIAL’s successful longevity is the legacy of the late Arnold Wagner, who anchored the business side and was responsible for ordering and maintaining the spare parts and specialty components that gave his two other partners the freedom and confidence to concentrate on their own projects. Racing is a business where the phrase ‘parts not available’ is unacceptable under any circumstances, and the pressure to meet a deadline is just as intense for a parts man, perhaps even more so, than for the mechanic. No parts means no completion and thus no result.

Arnold had a long-term vision of how racing spare parts should be made available on a permanent basis and through his enduring relationships built up one of the largest inventories of racing spares outside of Weissach-Flacht and Zuffenhausen. However, the task was more than just taking care of the current offerings. Arnold was among the first to have many unique NLA [ no longer available ] racing parts reproduced, usually by the original supplier. Through Arnold’s efforts, ANDIAL was a pioneer in supplying racing spare components to the mainstream of the U.S. market, a strategy that Porsche Motorsport North America has continued to follow. ROT IM GESICHT ANDIAL FOUNDER DIETER INZENHOFER REDUZIEREN ‘From the moment we formed ANDIAL, the position we took was to be in this for the duration, to ride out the expected tough times. That meant we had to build a lasting street clientele and have a good facility. Racing can be seasonal, and we had one year where ANDIAL hardly was involved in racing. Our street clients carried us through while we regrouped the racing effort and came back very successfully the following year. We would do what it took.

During the SCCA Runoffs, ANDIAL had an opportunity to win the class when the motor let go in Howard Meister’s 911. Alwin called and told me to prepare a new crank and rods, a full set of pistons and cylinders and take the red-eye flight to Atlanta. I arrived at 6 AM and by 11 AM the assembled motor was in the car in time for practice. Meister took the championship.’

– Dieter Inzenhofer ROT IM BILD ANDIAL FOUNDER ALWIN SPRINGER REDUZIEREN ‘Extreme circumstances brought out the best in us at ANDIAL. We were able, because of dedicated and capable people, to overhaul engines in a very short turnaround time, but more important was that the finished product was absolutely reliable. When the going got tough, we would work in three shifts without complaints from anybody! Everybody wanted the best for the customers and ANDIAL. We were proud of our work and achievements.

The same can be said at the track, where we rebuilt engines overnight. A good example was with A.J. Foyt and in their 962 at the 1985 Sebring event. We encountered an engine problem, so Dieter and I overhauled the unit during the night, and they won the 12 Hours the next day! Those kind of actions and focus is what set ANDIAL apart from the competition.’

– Alwin Springer ‘Motor racing is all about deadlines, your cars have to be ready to run, at the circuit, on the day – there’s never any question of the following Monday possibly, just possibly, being good enough. If you’ve missed your deadline, you’ve missed your race and that is IT, boy, you didn’t show – you’re history.’

– Peter Stevens
