Similarly, Green Lantern was of African descent to provide black children a super-hero with whom they could more easily identify. Hearts and Minds Terror Beyond Hearts and Minds Eclipse Best World consists of the 37th and 38th episodes of Justice League. It premiered on November 1, 2003. The contents of the show Plot Part I Superman confronts the president. Justice League storms the White House. Batman and Wonder Woman take over the Secret Service, clearing Superman's path to the Oval Office. Inside the Oval Office, President desperately collects papers. Superman breaks in by saying that he accepts Luthor for crimes committed in the office. Semi-mad at the same time going through the paperwork, Luthor rants that he is not to blame. People for not being able to see or take it to great design for the world. Lutor is preparing to press the button that will start a nuclear war, saying they will burn for their mistake. But then he calms down, and waits to see what Superman will do; he notes that Superman can't stop him without deadly force. Superman hesitates, and Luthor mocks him, saying that Krypton was Luthor's greatest accomplice all along: he loves being a hero and all the fame that comes with him so much that he continues to frustrate Luthor over and over again, instead of having the courage to put an end to it once and for all. Although Luthor may lose the presidency, he will eventually find a way out of prison, and everything will start again. Alas, this turns out to be Luthor's last mistake; Clearly affected by the accusations of his nemesis, Superman decides that if being a hero led to this endless cycle, he's done with it. He looks at Luthor, his eyes glow red...... and outside the Oval Office a strange smell reaches the noses of Batman and Wonder Woman. They rush and stop dead on their paths to see that Superman burned Luthor to death. Wonder Woman is shocked, while Batman coldly proclaims that it should have been done. Wonder Woman asks Superman if he's okay; Turning around, Superman shows off a unnerving smile on his face, and says he's great. Two years later, the Earth became a very different world. Superman and his five remaining teammates are now the effective rulers of the planet. It turned out that the catalyst for their rebellion was the death of the Flash, killed as part of the Luthor schemes. Watching the events with their new, well-armed watchtower, they took over the government and undermined freedom of speech, all in the name of people's safety. After denial The US president is allowing the election to choose his successor, Hawkgirl and Green Lantern sent to disperse the protest in Smallville. Batman retreated to , claiming to be busy with the project. The very appearance of Green Lantern and Hawkgirl makes the protesters disperse, out of fear. Hawkgirl shows some doubts, wondering why they should go to such lengths when the world has already become much safer. Lantern says they must remain vigilant, and he is at ease with their actions because the dangerous world needed their leadership. While Superman awkwardly dines with , she also voices her fears about the fascist regime of the Lords. Superman tells her that she lacks a big picture, but their conversation is interrupted by Batman, who triggers an urgent meeting of the Lords of Justice. When Superman leaves, Lois tries to follow him out of the apartment, only to be stopped by security guards at her door. She scolds the soldiers, and therefore the people of the Earth, for being blindly obedient and smug under the rule of the Lords of Justice. In Batcave, Batman shows other Justice League lords fighting Lex Luthor. What they see, Batman explains, is a real-time event from an alternate reality - a reality in which the rest of the series takes place. In this reality, the Lightning is still alive, and the League still plays a passive, law enforcement role. Deciding that the alternative world needs their brand of law and order as well as their own, the Lords of Justice decide to intervene. The Justice League double was crossed by their colleagues. In the primary universe, the Justice League continues to fight Luthor, eventually defeating him and disassembling the weapons he was preparing. Soon after, the Martian Lord Hunter emerges from the interreath of reality portal, stating that he was sent from an alternative reality battle league that needs a primary league of help. While the League, especially Batman, has some doubts, they have chosen to trust Judge Lord J'onn. Once the League has entered the alternate universe, they are quickly put down by a trap. Hawkgirl, however, refuses to go down without a fight (a fact noted with some pride by her colleague Justice Lord) and is badly injured when the lantern has to knock her out. While Hawkgirl is accepted for medical treatment, other league members are locked in a specially designed cell unit. The Lords, with the exception of Batman, then move on to the mainstream universe, planning to bring order to the new world. Judgment Day has come. It seems that the Lords of Justice are arriving just in time: the rogue behemoth Judgment Day is at large. Lords every attack, but no one fits for a creature other than Superman. When it becomes clear that they are outmatched in strength and stamina, Superman ends by lobotomizing the Doomsday with its thermal vision. The main version of Lois Lane shocked the ferocity of Superman, but others in the crowd cheered, saying: It's time the heroes took a more aggressive approach. Watching this from prison, Luthor alone realizes that these heroes are not the real Justice League. Part II Batman won't want to lose his friend again. Back in the reality of the Lords, Judge Lord Batman acts as a jailer for the rest of the League. Batman and Flash scold him for the extremes that the Lords have gone to. Judge Lord Batman only objects that such a thing could just as easily have happened to them if they had been pushed far enough- for the Lords, he admits, the push came with Death Flash. Judge Lord Batman tells them not to worry about trying to escape because he has already thought about everything their Batman will have. But Flash's pulse becomes unstable and then stops completely. Fearing that another Lightning had just died on his watch, Judge Lord Batman rushes into the camera and opens it to see what is happening. As soon as Judge Lord Batman unpacked the hand of Flash, the fastest man alive clobbers his barrage of super-speed punches, pounding his warden all over the room. The flash escapes, shackles the Lord justice in his place, and emerges from his cell to free the others. Batman says he didn't know that Flash could accelerate his own pulse to the point where it seems flat, prompting Flash to admit that it didn't either; It was the first time Flash tried such a trick, but since Batman couldn't come up with a plan, he fell for him to think about something. Batman heads to batcave his colleague to activate the portal between reality, while the rest of the league is sent to find Hawkgirl. As he approaches the portal, Batman encounters his colleague, who escaped from flash's cell and foresaw all his moves. Hidden in the shadows, the two stalks each other through the cave, all the while discussing the ethics of what the lords did. Batman says they have crossed the line by seizing power, but Judge Lord Batman replies that, having told authorities, they have made a world where no other eight-year-old boy will lose his parents senseless violence as they did. At the same time, Batman throws his batarang, comes into the light and gives up. The League track is Hawkgirl at , the only hospital equipped to treat metahuman patients. But asylum is a very different place than what was in their reality. Staff are all ex-criminals, especially from the gallery of Batman crooks, all of whom are calm, docile zombies. All the inmates appeared to be lobotomised by Lord Justice Superman's thermal vision, revealing that Judgment Day was not the first victim of Lord Justice Superman's brutal tactics. Very calm and polite - Superintendent. Pretending to be lords, asks to be taken to Hawkgirl. The Joker asks for the password that J'onn J'onzz gives by reading the Joker's mind (apple puree). The Joker says they did everything right, but apologizing is alarming because Wonder Woman had to say it. The robotic versions of Lord Justice Superman attack the league, but are easy to defeat, and the league breaks Hawkgirl out. Batman shows himself around an alternative . Batman and his colleague, with Batman at the wheel of Lord Justice's , drive through towards Arkham. Batman is surprised to see Gotham without garbage; The Lord of Justice says that if someone wants people to respect big laws, then small laws must be enforced. When they stop at a red light, they see a restaurant where a customer argues with the manager about refusing to pay for the poor quality of his food, and in a short time arrested by the police for breaking the peace. Seeing the judge Lord Batman, looking at them, the staff and other patrons hastily and nervously move away from their own business. Batman needles his colleague, wondering what Mom and Dad will think. By the time they reach Arkham, the military had been alerted and the league barricaded itself inside. Judge Lord Batman has now changed his heart and is telling the military to back down. As the League prepares to return to its reality to confront the Lords, Batman openly wonders what they will have to do: the Lords are their equal in strength and intelligence, and they are willing to kill, while the League is not. Superman doesn't want to cross that line, but Batman says they'll have to cross a line if they want to succeed. In primary reality, the Lords occupied the League's Watchtower when they received a warning about escaping from prison: Luthor escaped. The Lords are going to prison, but this is a trap set by the League, reflecting the Lords of Justice's own trap that has taken over the League. In the next fight, each member of the League fights with his colleague, and neither side can get the upper hand. The exception is Lord Superman, whose own colleague is mysteriously absent, and who ended up fighting Flash. Flash tries to turn to the good in Lord Superman, reminding him of his friendship with Lord Flash, but fails. Lord Superman prepares to kill Flash, but then Superman arrives with Luthor, who rebuilt the weapon from his previous fight with the League. Luthor turns the energy destroyer to Superman. Luthor fires weapons at each of the lords, depleting their powers. He is tempted to turn the gun on Superman, but then passes it, because the deal is a deal. It turned out that Superman received a presidential pardon for Luthor in exchange for his help in defeating the Lords, who were taken away. Lord Superman is raging that everything Luthor does from now on will be on Superman's head. agrees that this is a high price, but states that this is one of the many difficult choices he had to make. Luthor later holds a press conference to answer questions about his new freedom. He says the business world doesn't seem as complicated as it used to be, but he's been giving some thought to politics. Continuity Background Home Video Releases Production notes that this episode was originally intended for the Crime Syndicate story. However, the Lords of Justice was set up and used instead by the Crime Syndicate. According to Bruce Timm, the idea of a crime syndicate story was later retained for the planned DTV Justice League: Worlds Collide, but the project never materialized because the DCAU production team could not work for DTV and in the first season of Justice League Unlimited at the same time. In the commentary, Bruce Timm claims that the sound effect used to flash stones at Lord Superman was a machine-gun shot with a silencer. On the same comment, the creators also pointed to a scene during a prison brawl where Green Lantern tried to knock down Justice Lord Hawkgirl with his on the wrong hand. The creators explained that the shot was failed because in the original version of GL actually filmed its energy bolts in the wrong direction from where Lord Hawkgirl was flying. The comment also showed that the tone of Lex Luthor's speech at a press conference at the end of the episode (in which Lex refuses big business to enter politics) was inspired by a speech given when Jerry Levin resigned as CEO of AOL Time Warner in 2002. The line There's no poetry in it (meaning business world) is a direct quote. Manufacturing Inconsistencies In Justice League Unlimited episode of Doomsday Sanctions, Project Cadmus is credited with creating Doomsday. However, Cadmus himself was formed in response to the rampage of the Lords of Justice. In addition, the motive and personality of Doomsday seem different (not just after Superman). When Jon Stewart tries to knock down Judge Lord Hawkgerl, her mace is tied to her back, although she has previously thrown her into Batman. In a reaction shot when leaguers are shocked to find a mild-mannered Joker running in Arkham Asylum, J'onn J'onzz's belt looks like a Superman belt, only colored differently. By the next scene, the J'onn belt is back to normal. During the battle at Arkham Asylum, one of Lord Justice Superman's robots shows a white S symbol on a yellow background, instead of Lord Justice Superman's red background. When Green Lantern picks up Hawkgirl and carries her from his hospital bed, his power ring disappears. The American flag at the White House is in reverse in the opening sequence - set along the edge of the lane rather than the proper star and stripe edge. J'onn reads the mind to find out the password, but somehow somehow Telepathy can't detect that it was Wonder Woman who had to say this when such a chain of memories were probably discovered by J'onn right away. Trivia Lords of Justice seems to know (at least) the identity of Lord Justice Superman as Judge Lord Hawkgirl's comments about Smallville being his hometown. Whether they know about Lord Justice Batman's identity or whether he managed to get them in and out of Batcave without disclosing it is unknown. In Lord Batman's Batcave, 's Costumes, , , and previous Batman outfits (one in the new Batman Adventure design) are visible, similar to Batman Behind the Batcave era. Lord Batman's suit wears on his chest insignia similar to II suit. During the Battle of judgment day, Judge Lord J'onn J'onzz was defeated when the Judgment Day lights leaked gasoline causing J'onn to be shrouded in flames and knocked out. Shortly before that, J'onn seemed somewhat shaken by the flames. This seems to be a nod to comics where the Martians are weak against fire. In an audio commentary on Part II, the authors write that these episodes were written in the days leading up to the invasion of Iraq. The writers noticed several similarities between the bush administration's policies and the Lords of Justice and were very concerned about the similarities. The writers will also say that they did not intend to run parallel, but rather to compelling stories. As a note to the foregoing, the president who Justice Lord Superman speaks of after their fascist rule seems to be largely based on (at the time) real life of President George W. Bush. Although the universe of Lords of Justice is almost identical to the mainstream, there are some differences: Ventriloquist and Scarface resolved their conflict in an episode of Double Conversation about the New Batman, where Ventriloquist reformed and destroyed the Scarface, long before Batman joined the Justice League. However, in the universe of Lords of Justice, their colleagues are seen as lobotomized prisoners in the Arkham Asylum, suggesting that Lord Batman joined the Justice League much earlier than in the mainstream universe, or that Usaker's attempt to reform failed for some reason, leading him to commit back to Arkham. On the appropriate note regarding Batman rogues, given that The Joker lobotomized by the Lord of Justice superman in this universe, it is likely that Batman events are beyond: The Joker's return will not happen as in the mainstream universe and Arkham Aslym will possibly remain instead of being replaced by a newer and safest medium. The of the Justice League series Starcrossed confirms that Hawkgirl was a Thanagarian spy all along, and that she infiltrated the Justice League to explore the Earth's weaknesses in the run-up to the Thanagarian invasion. However, since no trace of invasion is mentioned in this universe, it is possible that Judge Lady Hawkgerl resigned from her position as a spy and deserted the Tagaris after the assassination of President Luthor. This is the second time in DCAU to show Batman is struggling with himself (the first of which is the duplicate H.A.R.D.A.C. in Batman: Animated Episode series His Silicon Soul). In both cases, one party is a free choice and the other is full of order and security. In both cases, Batman wins, seemingly losing. Batman's secret code - 91939. This is a reference to Batman's 1939 debut. During their struggle, Lord Justice Superman and Judgment Day beat each other at the same time. In the comics, this is what led to both of their deaths during the famous death of Superman storyline. The audio comment also revealed that the Lords of Justice were heavily influenced by comic Power, which features an uncompromising super-team that has taken over their world for their own good and will use whatever means necessary to achieve their goals. The audio comment further stated that the scene where Wonder Woman threw her tiara at Judge Lord Wonder Woman was a tribute to Linda Carter as Amazon's Amazing 70s TV show Wonder Woman. In the said show as well as the comics, Diana often used her indestructible tiara as a throwing weapon. Diana does it again, in order to disarm Tobias Manning in justice League Unlimited episode Once and Future Thing Part One: Strange Western Tales. In the commentary, Bruce Timm argues that the lines uttered by Lord Superman's robotic replicas are unpopular quotes from Superman back in the first season. The gag was an episode of writer Stan Berkowitz's idea. However, in reality, only two of them are paraphrases from the lines said by Superman, and the rest never spoke. Starring Uncredited Performances Alternative Two-Faced Alternative Ventriloquist and Scarface Quotes Justice Lord Superman: There are at least six different ways I can stop you right now. President Luthor: But they're all about deadly force, aren't they? And you don't. No, you need me. You wouldn't be a great hero without a villain, and you love being a hero, wouldn't you? The applause of the children, the swooning women, you love him so much, it made you my most trusted accomplice. Justice Lord Superman: Accomplice? What do you do...? President Luthor: You could crush me at any time, and it was not the law or the will of the people who stopped you. It was your ego. Being a hero was too important to you. You're as responsible as I am. Justice Lord Superman: I loved being a hero, but if that's where he leads, I'm done with it. Luthor: (after being caught) Watch. I'll come through Days. Wonder Woman: Not with a broken leg you won't. Will. Lord Superman: What do you want? Judgment Day: Just like you, I suppose. Power. Management. But I had to see the best that this planet has to offer. I'm not impressed. Batman: You thought about everything. Judge Lord Batman: No. Just everything you ever think of. Flash: What are you looking at? Yes? Judge Lord Batman: Calm down. Someday you'll appreciate it. Flash: Yes? I don't think Hawkgerle would appreciate it too highly. Judge Lord Batman: It was an accident. She's in our best hospital right now, and... Flash: I don't want to hear it. Batman: I think he likes you. Flash: Must be my magnetic personality. Batman: How did you get out? Flash: I sped up my heartbeat until it looked like it was flat. Batman: I didn't know you could do that. Flash: Me too. But I had to come up with something if you weren't going to. Batman: I couldn't. Not to foresee with him everything I could ever think of. But who can foresee you? Judge Lord Batman: Think about it. A world where there is no crime, no victims, no pain. Batman: And there's no choice. Who elected you? Judge Lord Batman: Who elected you? The problem with democracy is that it doesn't make you safe. Batman: He has other virtues, but you seem to have forgotten them. Judge Lord Batman: I haven't forgotten. I just chose peace and security instead. Batman: You've seized power! Judge Lord Batman: And with that power, we have made a world in which no eight-year-old boy will ever lose his parents... because of some punk with a gun. (Batman throws his batarang to the ground and is silent for a minute) Batman: You win. Batman: They'll love it here, won't they? Judge Lord Batman: Who? Batman: Mom and Dad. They'd be so proud of you. Judge Lord Batman: just a drive. Flash: Hey, it was the conscience of your group and that means I have to be... Green Lantern: Come on, Jimidi! Flash: Wow, Supes, you really know how to knock down a house! (Justice Lord Superman raises a flash and raises his fist, but then hesitates) Flash: I can't, can I? I'm the last part of your conscience, and that's something you'll never do. Another one won't hurt. Lex Luthor: (direction of arms) That would be so cute. But... A deal is a deal. Green Lantern: What's the deal? Superman: A full pardon in exchange for his help. Lord Justice Superman: Everything he does from now on is your fault! Superman: It's a high price, but it's better than the alternative. Inquiries - Bruce Timm's Interview in The World's Finest Finest
