PERIOD ENDING OCTOBER 31, 2018 Revenues Total Revenue for the year was $6.7 million, comprised of $1.2M in dues and $5.5 M in contributions and Other. Contributions were derived primarily from Capital Campaign donations, Foundation grants, restricted land-fund gifts through membership donations and Other is primarily investment income. The Cranberry operations produced a net loss of $503K as the crop suffered from extensive damage due to a late infestation of Firewormand region-wide economic challenges.

Expenses Direct Operating Expenses were $4.5 million, a 15% year over year increase as the Foundation took on additional development expense.

Balance Sheet The Foundation remains in very good financial shape with solid liquidity and no debt. Net assets increased by $2.1 million to $132.9 million.

Fiscal Year End Change The Foundation recently changed its Fiscal Year End from 10/31 to 12/31 in order to simplify its record keeping and conform to the reporting periods of some of its Investment Managers. The results for the stub period 11/1/18 through 12/31/18 will be reported in next year’s Annual Report and the Audit for that period will be posted to the Foundation’s website as it becomes available.

We are continually reviewing revenues, expenses and capital expenditures along with initiating new ideas and programs to improve our revenue base. Overall, the Foundation remains in solid financial shape, and we are confident of our ability to safeguard the Foundation’s assets, manage the current portfolio of properties, and pursue additional conservation properties as they become available. As always, we express our deepest gratitude for the special funding assistance received from the Tupancy-Harris Foundation.

Respectfully submitted,

David Ross, Assistant Treasurer

17 Nantucket Conservation Foundation - ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 18 JIM LENTOWSKI RETIREMENT

On June 30, 2018, friends, family, and colleagues came together to celebrate Jim Lentowski’s retirement from the Nantucket Conservation Foundation.

The event was held at the Nantucket Field Station on a beautiful summer evening. Guests enjoyed cocktails and appetizers overlooking the bluff, followed by a seated dinner. Each table was named after a conservation property acquired during Jim’s tenure as Executive Director, and at each setting was a fun fact about Jim.

Guests watched a video about Jim’s history at the Foundation, with Jim himself regaling stories of friends of the Foundation and later enjoyed tributes by Jim’s colleagues and family.

Jim retired on July 3, 2018, exactly 47 years after he began his career with the Nantucket Conservation Foundation.

riginally donated to the Foundation by founding trustees Roy Larsen, Walter Beineke and Arthur Dean, the Milestone Bog was at one time the largest contiguous cranberry bog in the Oworld. This rich history of harvesting cranberries on Nantucket continued with the 2018 harvest. We reduced the bogs in production from 195 acres to 80 acres at the Milestone bogs for 2018 as market pricing remained depressed and we decided to lessen the risk until the market bounced back. The Milestone bogs received organic certification in 2018 and will be managed organically going forward. At Milestone, the wide, expansive view of the grasslands to the Sankaty Lighthouse in the distance brings you back to an earlier time. Pre-dating the Civil War, cranberry harvesting was an integral part of Nantucket’s economy, most notably after the whaling industry had moved on. The Foundation is proud to maintain this historically important heritage.

Tommy Larrabee heads our cranberry operations as Cranberry Bog Manager. Tom took the handoff from his father, Tom Larrabee Sr., who ran the operation for many years and was a long standing island tradition himself. It takes a varied combination of mechanical, hydrological, chemical and forecasting abilities to correctly manage the operation. Also part of our fulltime crew at the bogs is Assistant Manager Nick Larrabee (Tom’s son) and Bill Coffin, the Foundation’s master mechanic.

A terrific piece of history has been captured at the bogs, along with the protection of a beautiful ecosystem. Managing both these aspects is a connection to our original trustees’ mission which still resonates today.

21 Nantucket Conservation Foundation The annual Cranberry Festival was held on Saturday of Columbus Day Weekend at the Milestone Cranberry Bog on a perfect fall day. Even during an unusually warm fall, some parts of the bog were flooded for wet picking demonstrations and some visitors were lucky enough to put on waders for a great photo opportunity in the bog with the berries.

There was plenty to celebrate: a fantastic fall day with over 7,000 island residents and visitors; the Foundation now using all organic farming methods (with the Milestone Bog receiving its USDA organic certification days earlier); over 9,000 acres of the island – that’s over 30% – under the Foundation’s stewardship; and carefully managed open spaces that are available to the public, year-round. The perfect Fall weather allowed for festival goers to enjoy music, hayrides, delicious food from local vendors, and fun children’s events.

- ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 22 PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

As more and more visitors come to enjoy Nantucket each year our properties are being utilized more than ever. For that reason, more emphasis than ever has been placed on our Properties Management group to accommodate the responsibilities involved with being the island’s largest land holder. Those responsibilities include maintaining the many miles of our walking trails, grasslands and roads open to the public, which means mowing and brush cutting cycles need to be planned and executed in concert with the property management plans we’ve developed.

Using our heavier equipment to cut back vegetation from our extensive road edges enables clearer sightlines for the safety of drivers, walkers and bikers, as well as mowing and cutting back the hundreds of acres in the Middle Moors “Serengeti” for grassland restoration in conjunction with our Science and Stewardship Department. New trails are being cut in to accommodate additional walkers. In addition, trail signage and fence lines must be maintained and constant patrolling of our properties completed for any signs of misuse, encroachment or areas that are in need of repair. Building repairs on our structures are ongoing and the skill sets we’ve developed allow us to do most of the necessary work in house, which allows us to control the repair/renovation schedule and lower costs associated with the work.

The group has helped complete field work for several of our Science and Stewardship Department’s grants and provides invaluable logistical assistance and direction in the field for our rangers and our expanding research staff. Maintenance staff also provide critical support for the Foundation’s nesting shorebird monitoring and protection efforts, which are undertaken annually to comply with state and federal endangered species regulations. This year, 8 pairs of piping plovers, 21 pairs of American oystercatchers, 484 pairs of least terns and 1 pair of common terns were monitored and protected with fencing and signage installed on Foundation-owned beaches at Eel Point, Capaum Pond, Coatue, The Haulover and Polpis Harbor where they nested and raised chicks.

Property Maintenance Department

The Properties Maintenance Department consists of Chris Iller, Richard Mack, Donnie Mack, Jake Visco and Dave Visco. Their ability in adapting to an almost daily mix of prioritizing and balancing new developments, especially during the summer high season, is their true value. We thank them for their fine efforts once again.

23 Nantucket Conservation Foundation SCIENCE AND STEWARDSHIP

The Foundation’s Science and Stewardship Department seeks to increase our understanding of the rare resources found on our properties by undertaking focused research, inventory and monitoring projects. This information is used by our year-round staff, including Karen Beattie (Science and Stewardship Department Manager), Jennifer Karberg, Ph.D. (Research Program Supervisor), and Kelly Omand and Danielle O’Dell (Ecologist/Field Supervisors) to make well-informed ecological management decisions and develop detailed plans for the stewardship of the Foundation’s conservation lands.

Science and Stewardship During 2018, we worked closely with our Department Manager Properties Maintenance staff, volunteers, local Karen C. Beattie conservation partners and outside researchers. We also hired several highly-qualified seasonal Research Program staff to assist us in accomplishing our objectives. Supervisor Elizabeth (“Libby”) Buck was our Shorebird Jennifer M. Karberg, Ph.D. Monitor/Invasive Species Field Crew Leader, returning to work with us for her fifth field Ecologist/Field Supervisors season. Laurel Martinez and James (“Mack”) Danielle I. O’Dell McGraw were our Botany/Ecology Field Kelly A. Omand Assistants. Neil Foley, our Coatue Shorebird Monitor/Ranger, also returned for a fifth summer Shorebird Monitor/Invasive as an integral part of the science team. The Species Field Crew Leader research and management projects we undertook Elizabeth C. Buck this year included some that were physically- demanding and involved biting insects, poison Coatue Ranger/ ivy and working late nights, early mornings and Shorebird Monitor weekends. Thanks to everyone for their hard Neil Foley work, positive attitude and perseverance.

Botany/Ecology Field Below is a summary of some of our major Assistants priorities and accomplishments during this Laurel F. Martinez past year. More detailed information about James M. - ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 24 SCIENCE AND STEWARDSHIP

■ Northern Long-eared Bat Research Northern long-eared bat research continued to be a big focus for our department this year. We worked with researchers from SUNY Albany who provided us with multiple acoustic detectors to systematically survey Nantucket for this federally- threatened species during the breeding season. Detectors were rotated through evenly placed cells around the main portion of the island, with northern long-eared bats calls recorded in every cell surveyed but one. Prior to this study, this species was not known to occur on Nantucket. We also continued our efforts to document the presence of breeding and hibernating bats by capturing, banding and - tracking at multiple locations on our properties. Danielle O’Dell from our staff has become widely recognized for her bat research expertise on Nantucket. As such, she was asked by consultants working for the Town of Nantucket to survey Surfside Crossing (the site of a proposed 40B affordable housing development) to determine if northern long-eared bats were using the property. Although ultimately denied access by the developers, high levels of bat activity were documented in surveys of Town and Land Bank- owned properties in the immediate vicinity. This information is currently being assessed as part of the permitting process for this proposed development.

25 Nantucket Conservation Foundation ■ Nantucket Flora Update We continued our collaboration to update of The Vascular and Non-Vascular Flora of Nantucket, Tuckernuck and Muskeget Islands - the definitive list of our local plant species, first published in 1996 and now outdated. We are working with staff from the Linda Loring Nature Foundation and Framingham State University and an adjunct research with the Maria Mitchell Association to provide a definitive record of changes that have occurred to our local flora during the past 25 years in response to land use changes, vegetation succession and climate change. Kelly Omand from our staff has extensive botanical expertise, and her work searching out and identify plants has led to the addition of at least 55 new species not previously known to occur on the island. When completed, this work will be published and also available online in digital format. ■ Massachusetts-wide Colonial Waterbird Census We undertook a survey of breeding colonial waterbirds on Foundation-owned properties during late May and early June. This work was overseen by MassWildlife and involved numerous cooperators across Massachusetts. The goal was to accurately estimate statewide numbers of breeding birds to gain insight into long term population trends. On Foundation- owned properties, this work entailed systematically counting double-crested cormorant, greater black-backed and herring gull nests along the length of Coatue and pairs of black-crowned night herons, snowy and great egrets breeding in the Coatue Point heronry. When compared to 2013 survey results, we documented an increase in gull, great egret and cormorant nesting pairs and a decline in black-crowned night heron and snowy egret pairs this year. The declining species are cause for concern, as our results mirror trends observed across Massachusetts. Likely factors affecting downward population trends include wetland degradation, decreased populations of fish and other food sources, sea level rise and associated loss of habitat and chemical contaminants present in the environment.

- ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 26 SCIENCE AND STEWARDSHIP ■ Xeric Habitats Pollinator Monitoring Our department participated in a region-wide project spearheaded by MassWildlife investigating the effects of management practices on pollinator populations within xeric (low moisture) grassland habitats. This project involves documenting, sharing, and refining best management practices, implementing experimental adaptive management and developing standardized monitoring protocols. At the Foundation’s Head of the Plains property, we collected pollinators during four sampling sessions by netting and placing “bee bowls” (, colored plastic bowls of soapy water that attract pollinators) along established transects. All collected insects were submitted to entomologists contracted by MassWildlife for identification. Preliminary results indicate that Head of the Plains has by far the highest pollinator species diversity of all eleven sites across the northeastern U.S. surveyed in this project.

■ Spotted Turtle Surveys This year, we revisited spotted turtles trapping sites monitored during 2005-2008 as part of a completed research project at Squam Farm aimed at identifying habitat use and seasonal movement patterns. During that 4-year project, we uniquely marked almost 100 turtles and recaptured a few old turtles that were marked in the early 1990’s by a previous researcher. Ten years later in 2018, we captured 56 individual spotted turtles, including 28 recaptures - 3 of which were first marked in the 1990’s and recaptured ten years ago. This work is contributing information about spotted turtle longevity and is part of a statewide survey to inform re-consideration of this species for federal “threatened” protection status. State biologists believe that Nantucket’s spotted turtle population may be one of the most robust and healthy in Massachusetts.

■ Head of the Plains Disk Harrowing Research We completed our second year of post-treatment sampling for our comprehensive brushcutting, disk harrowing and native seed addition research at Head of the Plains. This project involves monitoring four different units, all approximately 3 acres in size: brushcut + harrow, brushcut only (no harrow), representative grassland and representative heathland. We are comparing the effects of these management treatments to the reference areas, focusing on changes in vegetation, insect, small mammal and bird populations to gain a better understanding of how combinations of management treatments affect the plants and wildlife. Visual assessment of the brushcut + harrow unit indicates that little bluestem grass (sown in half of the monitoring plots) and other grassland-associated species have colonized this area at a much higher rate than

27 Nantucket Conservation Foundation in the brushcut only unit. Additionally, we observed many individuals of rare sandplain blue-eyed grass recruited into the brushcut + harrow unit this year, which is very encouraging.

■ Professional Publications Our science staff authored several professional publications this year reporting the results of our research in various scientific journals, including the following: • “Harrowing and Seed Addition for Sandplain Grassland and Heathland Restoration” by Kelly Omand, Jennifer Karberg, Danielle O’Dell and Karen Beattie, published in the Natural Areas Journal. • “Tidal Hydrology and Salinity Drives Salt Marsh Vegetation Restoration and Phragmites australis Control in New England” by Jennifer Karberg, Karen Beattie, Danielle O’Dell and Kelly Omand, published in Wetlands: • “Bat Use of an Island off the Coast of Massachusetts” by Zara Dowling and Danielle I. O’Dell, published in the Northeastern Naturalist.

■ Invasive Species Management Efforts We continued our non-native, invasive common reed (Phragmites australis) management efforts at multiple sites on the Foundation’s properties. Follow-up monitoring and management was undertaken at Madequecham Valley, East Forked Pond Valley, West Hummock Pond, Eel Point and Folger’s Marsh to ensure that common reed populations successfully eradicated from these sites after multiple years of herbicide treatment do not re-establish. We also continued to participate in the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative Invasive Plant Species Committee’s weekly weed pulls, where staff from the island’s conservation organizations and volunteers meet for a few hours to help each other on their respective invasive species management projects.

In addition to these major projects, we also continued monitoring and management on a number of multiple year, ongoing projects, including a region-wide horseshoe crab spawning survey, participation in the American Oystercatcher Working Group’s Atlantic and Gulf Coast-wide color-banding and re-sighting efforts, monitoring of the Medouie Creek salt marsh restoration project, systematic surveys for multiple rare plant species, and seed collection and greenhouse propagation of common, native plant species for use in habitat restoration projects. We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to everyone that has contributed to the success of our many projects and endeavors over the past year - especially our generous donors and dedicated Board of Trustees, who make everything we do possible. - ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 28 WILDFIRE PREVENTION PROGRAM

2018 represented the sixth year of the implementation of our Wildfire Prevention Program. Prior to that we had drawn up a master plan and for each property and had it approved by the state of Massachusetts. With the purchase of two large, expensive Fecon mulching machines and the development of fire break plans for those NCF properties most at risk the Foundation has created a series of wide, low firebreaks throughout the Middle Moors and the Head of the Plains. Since that time we have brush cut nearly ten miles of firebreaks throughout the Middle Moors and the Head of the Plains, or about 500 acres. This acreage is re-mowed annually to maintain its low cover. During 2018 we cut additional fire breaks in the Tom Nevers area of the south shore, which is the final area we had targeted. Most people do not realize that there is a history of large, accidental wildfires on the island. We should finish up the south shore next year and complete the initial fire break cuts. These fire breaks slow the spread and flow of a fire, provide better accessibility for responding firefighters, and improve protection for nearby homes and the people who live in them.

We are grateful to all those who have contributed to the wildfire reduction program and we will continue to modify our plans where needed to ensure the best possible system of firebreaks will be developed.

29 Nantucket Conservation Foundation TUPANCY-HARRIS FOUNDATION

As a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees from 1978 until her death, Sallie Gail Harris Tupancy learned about the importance of open space protection and was one of the Foundation’s strongest supporters. Together with her husband Oswald (“Tup”) Tupancy, Sallie created the Tupancy-Harris Foundation in 1987 as a way of supporting the Conservation Foundation as well as a variety of other organizations which they felt benefited Nantucket’s year- round population.

Today, the Conservation Foundation receives a generous annual grant in support of its organizational operations and to help bridge some of the gap that exists between membership revenues and expenses associated with the responsible stewardship of several hundred properties.

The Foundation would like to acknowledge and thank Mr. Doug Burden, executor of the Tupancy-Harris Foundation, for his support and generosity. Daniel Sutherland Photography - ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 30 Land Donors 1963 - 2018

31 Nantucket Conservation Foundation 50-Year Contributors

We would like to recognize those individuals and families who had the foresight to believe in the organization’s mission long before conservation and “green” issues were popular. Without their loyal and generous support over the past five decades, Nantucket would be a very different place.

How to make a memorial gift

Making a memorial gift to the Nantucket Conservation’s Land Fund is a wonderful and appreciated way to commemorate the passing of a loved one, a close friend or an island neighbor. The Foundation will promptly inform a family member or friend of your thoughtful gesture, acknowledge your gift to you, and unless otherwise requested, include it in our next Annual Report. At the time memorial gift is made we would appreciate being advised to whom our notification should be sent including that person’s mailing address. Notifications to an honoree’s family members or friend or listing in a publication will not include the dollar amount of your gift. Please remember that a memorial gift to the Foundation is a fitting way of celebrating a person’s time on earth and sustaining the effort required to preserve Nantucket’s remarkable open spaces for all to enjoy.

Gift and Estate Planning

A charitable bequest is one of the simplest ways you can leave a long-lasting impact that will help protect Nantucket’s fragile environment. Providing a bequest gift through your will or trust to the Foundation will help us preserve, maintain and manage conserved open spaces of Nantucket now and for years to come. We invite you to contact the Nantucket Conservation Foundation development office for information about leaving a gift in your will at 508-228-2884.

- ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - 52 The Nantucket Conservation Foundation extends a heartfelt thank you to all of the individuals listed below who volunteered their time and effort during the year to help make 2018 such a success for the organization.
