17 Nantucket Conservation Foundation - ANNUAL REPORT 2019 - 18 COATUE GIFT

Craig family donates Coatue property to NCF In October 2019, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation announced that the Craig Family donated almost four acres of land on Coatue to the Foundation. This gift will allow the Foundation to continue to have a presence on Coatue in perpetuity. The property, located on Bass Point, consists of 3.88 acres and a 490 SF bungalow that has housed the Foundation’s Seasonal Coatue Ranger.

The Craig family sisters, Hayden Craig Hurley, Sheron Craig Lowe, and Christina Craig Moore graciously leased the Ranger Station located on the property to the Foundation for many years, allowing the Foundation to house a full time, seasonal ranger. The Coatue Ranger monitors and protect rare beach- nesting shorebirds, patrols and maintains the properties, and interacts with visitors to the area.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Craig family for their long-time support of the Foundation and with the gift of land on Coatue,” said Cormac Collier, President & CEO. “The Ranger Station will be renamed the Craig Family Ranger Station in their honor.”

The gift of land now brings the Foundation’s total holdings to 9,009 acres of land on Nantucket.

- ANNUAL REPORT 2019 - 20 CRANBERRY REPORT

As 2019 drew to a close, we gave thanks to our long term second generation farmer Tom Larrabee Jr. who retired and handed the cranberry reins to his son Nick. Tom Jr. grew up at the bog, as his father, Tom Larrabee Sr., began to work the Milestone Bog in 1951, and becoming manager in 1959. Tom Jr.’s first job was mowing the edge of the bog at the age of 10. “I was put to work as soon as I could reach the pedals,” Tom Jr. recalled fondly. He worked at the bog alongside his father through high school during harvest, and with the rest of his family. In 1980, Larrabee joined the Marine Corps for four years, and then moved to Hilton Head, SC. In 2003 Tom Jr. returned to Nantucket to work the bogs till this year.

Tom Jr. has contributed a lifetime of experience to the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, and his achievements and legacy will not be forgotten. The Trustees thank Tom Jr. for all that he has done for the bogs, and mold the next generation of leadership. We welcome Nick as he brings his energy and passion following the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

21 Nantucket Conservation Foundation The annual Cranberry Festival was rescheduled from Saturday of Columbus Day Weekend to Sunday due to high winds and storms. Sunday was a beautiful day, but numbers were down as many people were unable to make it to the island. Visitors enjoyed parts of the bog that were flooded for wet picking demonstrations and some visitors were lucky enough to put on waders for a great photo opportunity in the bog with the berries.

There was plenty to celebrate: a fantastic fall day with over 4,000 island residents and visitors; the Foundation now using all organic farming methods, over 9,000 acres of the island – that’s over 30% – under the Foundation’s stewardship; and carefully managed open spaces that are available to the public, year-round. The rescheduled festival allowed for islanders and visitors alike to enjoy music, hayrides, delicious food from local vendors, and fun children’s events.

23 Nantucket Conservation Foundation SCIENCE AND STEWARDSHIP

The Foundation’s Science and Stewardship Department seeks to increase our understanding of the rare resources found on our properties by undertaking focused research, inventory and monitoring projects. This information is used by our year- round staff, including Karen Beattie (Science and Stewardship Director), Jennifer Karberg, Ph.D. (Research Program Supervisor), Kelly Omand and Danielle O’Dell (Ecologist/Field Supervisors) and Libby Buck (Ecological Stewardship and Research Technician) to make well-informed ecological management decisions and develop detailed plans for the stewardship of the Foundation’s conservation lands.

Director of Science and During 2019, we worked closely with our Properties Stewardship Maintenance staff, volunteers, local conservation Karen C. Beattie partners and outside researchers. We also hired several highly-qualified seasonal staff to assist Research Program us in accomplishing our objectives. Brendan Supervisor Connolly (BS in Biology/BA in Psychology from Jennifer M. Karberg, Ph.D. Denison University) and Jeremy Vandenberg (BS in Conservation Biology from Middlebury Ecologist/Field College) were our Ecology Field Assistants. Neil Supervisors Foley (MS in Conservation Biology from Central Danielle I. O’Dell Michigan University) returned for a sixth summer Kelly A. Omand as our Coatue Ranger/Shorebird Monitor and then transitioned into a full-time, year-round position Ecological Stewardship as our new Interpretive Education Coordinator/ and Research Technician Ecologist in the fall of 2019. The research and Elizabeth C. ■ Windswept Bog Wetland Restoration Project

Since the Board of Trustees’ decision in January, 2019 to retire cranberry cultivation at the Foundation’s Windswept Cranberry Bog, our department has made progress with preliminary planning for a large- scale wetland restoration project at this site. We are working with experts from the Cranberry Bog Program of the Mass. Division of Ecological Restoration (MassDER) and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, who specialize in pulling together partnerships to assist landowners with restoring wetlands on retired cranberry bogs such as Windswept. Progress made during 2019 included several site visits with wetland restoration ecologists, collection of multiple rounds of water quality monitoring data, completion of soil and ground penetrating radar surveys to confirm historic wetland presence and initial surveys for species of conservation concern, including rare and invasive plants and spotted turtles. MassDER is funding a preliminary engineering feasibility and design analysis for this project and has also recently applied for a comprehensive federal grant to cover costs associated with easement purchases and restoration work for Windswept Bog and a number of other similar projects in Massachusetts.

25 Nantucket Conservation Foundation ■ Northern Long-eared Bat Research

Northern Long-eared bat research continued to be a big focus for our department this past year. Danielle O’Dell, our department’s wildlife ecologist, has become widely recognized for her bat research expertise on Nantucket. Under her leadership, our field crew captured 82 adult and juvenile northern long- eared bats in mist nets at various locations on Nantucket during the spring, summer and fall of 2019. In addition to weighing, measuring and banding each bat with a unique numbered wing band, their wings and muzzles were tested for Pd (Pseudogymnoascus destructans), the fungus that causes White- nose Syndrome (https://www.whitenosesyndrome.org/). Thankfully, all our samples collected in 2019 returned Pd negative. We continued bat acoustic surveys across the island, focusing this year on more remote sections such as Coskata-Coatue and the old Sconset Dump. We also put detectors in places where we have never collected data, such as downtown Nantucket, where we were somewhat surprised to find high levels of northern long-eared and red bat activity. All of this information is contributing to our knowledge about what types of habitats on Nantucket are important for northern long- eared bats and how our habitat management efforts may affect populations of this rare species, which appears to be thriving here despite drastic population declines throughout the rest of the northeast region.

- ANNUAL REPORT 2019 - 26 SCIENCE AND STEWARDSHIP ■ Saltmarsh Dieback Research and Management In response to increased salt marsh dieback observed around Polpis Harbor, Dr. Jen Karberg (our department’s Research Program Supervisor and wetland ecologist) initiated a new research project investigating methods of slowing and potentially reversing salt marsh dieback by controlling populations of the native purple marsh crab and non-native green crab. Intensive grazing by crabs on smooth cordgrass along the salt marsh edge leads to salt marsh dieback, often resulting in the complete loss of stabilizing marsh vegetation. Our research involved trapping and removing a total of 215 purple marsh crabs and 168 green crabs twice per week between May and August to reduce the effects of grazing. Following 3 months of removal efforts, we monitored the impacted marsh dieback areas in August and observed very little evidence of grazing. Furthermore, for the first time in many years, we documented marsh grass recolonizing some of these sites, which is very encouraging! We plan to continue trapping and possibly expand this effort into a larger portion of the marsh in future years. The results of this work will inform the feasibility of future salt marsh restoration work on a larger scale in Polpis Harbor and at other sites that have been similarly impacted by salt marsh die-off.

■ Nantucket Flora Update We continued our collaborative database update for The Vascular and Non- Vascular Flora of Nantucket, Tuckernuck, and Muskeget Islands, which was first published in 1996. Kelly Omand, our department’s plant ecologist and botanist extraordinaire, is working with staff from the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, Framingham State University and an adjunct researcher from the Maria Mitchell Association on this long-term project, which will be wrapping up in 2020. The updated database and pending publication will increase our understanding of changes that have occurred to our local flora during the past 25 years in response to land use changes, vegetation succession and climate change. It will also serve as the definitive record of the plants currently on Nantucket and as a reference for all botany-related work for years to come. When completed, this work will be published and also available online in digital format.

27 Nantucket Conservation Foundation ■ Shorebird Monitoring During the 2019 breeding season, Libby Buck (our department’s shorebird ecologist) worked with Neil Foley (Coatue Ranger) to monitor and protect 10 pairs of piping plovers, 20 pairs of American oystercatchers, 20 pairs of least terns and 1 pair of common terns that nested and raised chicks on Foundation-owned beaches. Highlights for this season included a new nesting site for least terns and piping plovers on the harbor beach at the Nantucket Field Station, as well as a single pair of common terns successfully raising chicks at the Haulover. We undertake this work annually to conserve shorebird populations and comply with endangered species regulations. Our staff also color-banded a total of 29 American oystercatcher chicks on Nantucket, Tuckernuck and Muskeget this year with uniquely coded yellow and black field-readable leg bands as part of a larger collaborative project overseen by the American Oystercatcher Working Group (www.amoywg.org). This widespread banding/re-sighting effort has revealed interesting connections between breeding and wintering sites and a glimpse into the complexity of dispersal patterns.

■ Head of the Plains Disk Harrowing Research We completed our third year of post-treatment sampling for our comprehensive brushcutting, disk harrowing and native seed addition research at Head of the Plains to assess the effectiveness of these techniques in restoring and maintaining rare sandplain grassland habitat. This project involves monitoring four different units, all approximately 3 acres in size: brushcut + harrow, brushcut only (no harrow), representative grassland and representative heathland. We are comparing the effects of these management treatments to the reference areas, focusing on changes in vegetation, insect, small mammal and bird populations to gain a better understanding of how combinations of management treatments affect the plants and wildlife.

- ANNUAL REPORT 2019 - 28 ■ School-to-Career Student Mentoring Lily Bartlett, a Nantucket High School senior, volunteered for our department approximately 8 hours per week during the school year in 2019 as part of the School-to-Career program. This is the first time that the Foundation has mentored a student in this capacity. School-to-Career is part of a national program that brings together schools, businesses and non-profit organizations to provide on-the- job experiences for students to explore potential careers, think about their future educational goals and develop workplace skills. Lily is interested in pursuing a career in environmental studies; she assisted our department staff with many tasks, including data entry, herbarium specimen preparation and sorting insect specimens collected. She was a very enthusiastic volunteer, a quick learner and a welcome addition to our team!

■ Other Projects In addition to these major projects, we also substantially increased our department’s outreach and education efforts by giving numerous public presentations on the results of our research and participating in committees and meetings where our staff can provide knowledgeable, relevant expertise. We also continued monitoring and management on a number of multi- year, ongoing projects, including participation in region-wide horseshoe crab spawning surveys, non-native, invasive species management efforts at multiple sites, systematic surveys for multiple rare plant species, seed collection and greenhouse propagation of common, native plant species for use in habitat restoration projects, and participation in the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative’s collaborative efforts.

We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to everyone that has contributed to the success of our many projects and endeavors over the past year - especially our generous donors and dedicated Board of Trustees, who make everything we do possible. 29 Nantucket Conservation Foundation Daniel Sutherland Photography - ANNUAL REPORT 2019 - 30 WILDFIRE PREVENTION PROGRAM

2019 represented the seventh year of the implementation of our Wildfire Prevention Program. This program is beneficial in slowing the spread and flow of fire, providing better accessibility for responding firefighters and improving protection for nearby homes and the people who live in them. Prior to the execution, we had drawn up a master plan for each property and had it approved by the State of Massachusetts. With the purchase of two large, expensive Fecon mulching machines and the development of fire break plans for those NCF properties most at risk, the Foundation has created a series of wide, low firebreaks throughout the Middle Moors and the Head of the Plains. Since that time, we have brush cut nearly ten miles of firebreaks throughout the Middle Moors and the Head of the Plains, or about 349 acres. This acreage is re-mowed annually to maintain its low cover. During 2019, we cut additional firebreaks in the Tom Nevers area of the south shore, which was the final area we had planned.

To date, we have completed all of the firebreak mowing. In the coming years, NCF will be working with the Town and other agencies on their comprehensive fire management program.

*Please note that the 2018 Annual report incorrectly reported the acreage of firebreaks cut.

31 Nantucket Conservation Foundation TUPANCY-HARRIS FOUNDATION

As a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees from 1978 until her death, Sallie Gail Harris Tupancy learned about the importance of open space protection and was one of the Foundation’s strongest supporters. Together with her husband Oswald (“Tup”) Tupancy, Sallie created the Tupancy-Harris Foundation in 1987 as a way of supporting the Conservation Foundation as well as a variety of other organizations which they felt benefited Nantucket’s year- round population.

Today, the Conservation Foundation receives a generous annual grant in support of its organizational operations and to help bridge some of the gap that exists between membership revenues and expenses associated with the responsible stewardship of several hundred properties.

The Foundation would like to acknowledge and thank Mr. Doug Burden, Executor of the Tupancy-Harris Foundation, for his support and generosity.

33 Nantucket Conservation Foundation 50-Year Contributors

We would like to recognize those individuals and families who had the foresight to believe in the organization’s mission long before conservation and “green” issues were popular. Without their loyal and generous support over the past five decades, Nantucket would be a very different place.

How to make a memorial gift

Making a memorial gift to the Nantucket Conservation’s Land Fund is a wonderful and appreciated way to commemorate the passing of a loved one, a close friend or an island neighbor. The Foundation will promptly inform a family member or friend of your thoughtful gesture, acknowledge your gift to you, and unless otherwise requested, include it in our next Annual Report. At the time memorial gift is made we would appreciate being advised to whom our notification should be sent including that person’s mailing address. Notifications to an honoree’s family members or friend or listing in a publication will not include the dollar amount of your gift. Please remember that a memorial gift to the Foundation is a fitting way of celebrating a person’s time on earth and sustaining the effort required to preserve Nantucket’s remarkable open spaces for all to enjoy.

Gift and Estate Planning

A charitable bequest is one of the simplest ways you can leave a long-lasting impact that will help protect Nantucket’s fragile environment. Providing a bequest gift through your will or trust to the Foundation will help us preserve, maintain and manage conserved open spaces of Nantucket now and for years to come. We invite you to contact the Nantucket Conservation Foundation development office for information about leaving a gift in your will at 508-228-2884.

- ANNUAL REPORT 2019 - 56 The Nantucket Conservation Foundation extends a heartfelt thank you to all of the individuals listed below who volunteered their time and effort during the year to help make 2019 such a success for the organization.
