2 Dear Friends, i’m coming up on something of a milestone in my time at four winds, my fifteenth summer at Camp. The first time Linda and I took the ferry to Orcas, in November of 2004, it was not our plan to stay 15 years. But, Four Winds proved to be a place where we could both do rewarding work with young people, and Orcas Island proved to be a place where we’d want to live and start our family. This milestone puts me in a reflective mood. It brings to mind the ninety-two previous Four Winds summers. It makes me think of all the times, over the years, that a camper or staff member has stepped foot on Orcas for the first time, unsure of what was in store for them. I think of all returning campers and staff, thrilled to see their friends again and make new ones. I think of adult alumni visiting, a bit wistful to see Four Winds entrusted to a new generation. Most of all, I think of the many ways Camp has changed, and the many ways it has stayed the same. On the year-round staff, we consider it a great compliment when an alum visits in the summer after many decades and tells us that Camp looks and feels the same. I consider it a great compliment because we’ve managed to pull off that feeling despite, in reality, Camp changing a great deal. Of course, we’re now a fully coed Camp, but we were founded as a girls-only camp. Activities have changed over the years. The number of campers has changed. The length of the sessions has changed. Buildings have changed. Old songs continue to be sung, but new ones are written every summer. I could go on and on. How is it possible that all this change has occurred, but Camp feels as though nothing has changed? I have a theory. The changes that have happened over the years have moved us closer and closer to the values we espouse at Camp. Throughout our history, our generous donors have been a critical element of our ability to do this. They’ve funded projects that have amounted to changes but have helped us get closer to our own ideals. They’ve been a sounding board to me and my predecessors in being clear on what those values are and how they’re lived at Camp. In my reflective mood, I wonder what changes we will be challenged with over the coming decades. I’m confident that with the same commitment to our values that has kept us strong these many decades, the decades to come will be filled with more positive change that doesn’t feel like change. Thank you for all your support. I hope to see many of you on Orcas this summer. Paul

3 From the Board i have just returned from a weekend on orcas island and was amazed at the beauty a winter day can bring. The natural surroundings are incomparable and it reminds me how fortunate we all are to be a part of the Four Winds family. We have now completed our 91st year and I am happy to report that Camp remains on sound financial footing and continues to meet our mission of providing the very best experience while enhancing our environment and infrastructure. Financial highlights include our long-term investments, inclusive of our endowments and board designated fund, which grew through our fiscal year end in September to $2.9 million, a 7% increase over the previous year. Through your donations and a modest annual distribution from our endowment, we were able to fund capital improvements such as the rebuilding of our treehouse, replacing our kayak fleet, finishing off Camp’s kitchen upgrades and redesigning the new Camp website which will be released later this year. Additionally, we were able to award camperships to approximately 20% of our campers through our Financial Aid program. We are grateful to have such a large and generous donor base. This year we were able to raise more than $500,000 from 522 donations, a notable year in both overall donations and number of donors. Most of our donations were made from individual or family annual giving. On a more poignant note, however, many were made in memory of those individuals we lost this year, via their own planned giving or by request of the family. We pause to give special acknowledgement to those individuals who will be forever part of our camp community and held in remembrance by our shores. In reflecting on this past year, I am struck by both the fragility and fortune that 12 months can bring and grateful to be connected to such a special place as Four Winds * Westward Ho. Camp remains strong and vital because of you, the loyal and generous people who support Camp and each other throughout the year. You make it all possible. Best wishes, Diana Wiegel Chair, FWWH Board of Trustees
