Art and Music on the Coast “In the Footsteps of the Normans: Rupestrian Churches and Abbeys”

DAY 1 – Thur 1 Oct 2015: ARRIVAL AND GUIDED TOUR OF Renowned for its stunning nature and tourist attraction, the is less known for the wealth of Medieval and Byzantine cathedrals, monasteries and churches that nestle along the shore and on the mountains that rise above the sea. We meet at airport in the late morning and transfer to Ravello and Hotel Bonadies where we will stay for three nights. Once a 12C monastery it is now a famous 4* hotel with fabulous views over the sea, a swimming pool and first class cuisine.

The afternoon will be spent visiting Ravello : the renowned gardens of and , the Cathedral of Ravello with its Spectacular Dome, located in the Vescovado Square. 8pm we will have dinner in the hotel (by invitation)

DAY 2 – Fri 2 Oct 2015: VISIT TO & EVENING CONCERT

10am - We will go to Salerno, the second major city in , it was considered the world capital of Medicine during the Middle Ages, because of the high level of education offered by the Benedictine Monastery at that time. We will visit the Cathedral, whose Dome is a mix of architectural styles, from Medieval to Baroque; the historical centre, a first class example of medieval planning and the botanical garden of La Minerva. We will return to Ravello for a free afternoon.

7pm - CONCERT IN RCS RECITAL HALL: ALESSANDRO MARANO piano recital - F.Schubert: Improvviso op.90 n.1 - L. van Beethoven: Sonata op.111 - F. Liszt: Consolazione n.3, Invocation, Funerailles - R.Wagner/F.Liszt: Fantasia on themes of “Rienzi”. The Concert is part of the Ravello Musical Festival which has a long established reputation for first class music.

DAY 3 – Sat 3 Oct 2015: GUIDED TOUR OF AMALFI & BOAT TRIP TO

10am - We will descend to Amalfi, a major tourist attraction thanks to its unique scenery that combines history and natural beauty. We will visit St. Andrew’s Cathedral, an excellent example of medieval architecture, the Cloister of Paradise, the Valley of the Mills, famous for its traditional production of handmade paper and the Paper Museum. Departing from the small port of Amalfi we go by boat to Positano. The trip will provide an opportunity to view the spectacular coast and mountains from a different perspective.

We will have free time for lunch and to shop in Positano, the most delightful and lively resort on the coast. We return by bus climbing to the 15C Convent of San. Domenico 364m. above the sea with wonderful views over the coast. The evening is free with dinner at leisure.

DAY 4 – Sun 4 Oct 2015: VIST TO THE CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DE OLEARIA, WINE TASTING IN A LOCAL CELLAR AND EVENING CONCERT 10am - We go to the picturesque resort of to see the rock church of Santa Maria dell’Olearia. This monastic building, consisting of three floors, built in a grotto, was founded by monks from an eastern culture. It is famous for the frescoes found in the three chapels of the structure. After the visit we will go to Tramonti to visit a local cellar in a historic farm of the 18C in the green of the regional park of Lattari mountains, to taste some DOC wines “COSTA D'AMALFI”, cheese and salami produced by the farm. It is an unforgettable experience to rediscover the tastes and flavours of this rural world.

After the visit we return to Ravello with free time in the afternoon. 7pm - CONCERT RAVELLO ART CENTRE: FEDERICA MONTI - FABIO BIANCO two-piano duo – JAZZ CONTAMINATIONS M. Ravel: La Valse - G. Gershwin: Rhapsody in blue - C. Guastavino: Romance op.2 n.1 - S. Rachmaninov: Tarantella - R. Piana: Sonata - W. Lutoslawski: Variations on a Theme of Paganini - N. Kapustin: Paraphrase on Dizzy Gillespie's Manteca op.129 - W. Bolcom: The Serpent's Kiss. Dinner after the Concert in a typical restaurant of Ravello (by invitation).

DAY 5 – Mon 5 Oct 2015: VISIT TO THE ABBEY OF CAVA DEI TIRRENI & DEPARTURE 10am - We leave for Cava dei Tirreni, known as "Little Switzerland" since the time of Goethe and the "Bologna of the South" for its architectural heritage. It is situated in a charming place, between fertile hills and mountains that fade around in the blue. We will visit the historical centre called “ Borgo Scacciaventi” and the Benedictine Abbey of the Holy Trinity founded in 1011 and rich in many works of art from different periods: buildings, frescoes, , sarcophagi, sculptures, paintings, illuminated manuscripts and precious objects.

Lunch in Cava dei Tirreni (by invitation) Transfer to Naples Airport, for check-in and return flight home.

COST: £1095 Single supplement: £90 The price includes: 3 nights bed & breakfast in a standard room; two dinners; two concerts; transport and guiding throughout; wine and local products tasting on day 4; light lunch on day 5.
