FamilyFamily By the age of 9, in 1964, he was a working professional musician. Recognizing the musical talents of Tommy and his brother Phil, their father created a family band, sold the family home and took his family on the road. With the family living in two station wagons, much of Emmanuel’s childhood was spent touring Australia with his family, playing rhythm guitar, and rarely going to school. The family found it difficult living on the road; they were poor and were often hungry, never settling in one place. His father would often drive ahead, organize interviews, advertising and finding the local music shop where they'd have an impromptu concert the next day. Eventually the New South Wales Department of Education insisted that the Emmanuel children needed to go to school regularly. Come with me. A generation ago, the astronomer Carl Sagan stood here and launched hundreds of millions of us on a great adventure: the exploration of the universe revealed by science. It's time to get going again. We're about to begin a journey that will take us from the infinitesimal to the infinite, from the dawn of time to the distant future. We'll explore galaxies and suns and worlds, surf the gravity waves of space-time, encounter beings that live in fire and ice, explore the planets of stars that never die, discover atoms as massive as suns and universes smaller than atoms. Cosmos is also a story about us. It's the saga of how wandering bands of hunters and gatherers found their way to the stars, one adventure with many heroes.

  • The Endless Road
Hugvísindasvið The Endless Road On Writing The Road Less Travelled B.A. Essay Hildur Guðbergsdóttir January 2015 University of Iceland School of Humanities Department of English The Endless Road On Writing The Road Less Travelled B.A. Essay Hildur Guðbergsdóttir Kt.: 140684-3849 Supervisor: Anna Heiða Pálsdóttir January 2015 Abstract It was inspiration and a lifelong passion for stories that prompted the writing of this novella called The Endless Road (about 28.000 words) and an essay called The Road Less Travelled (around 3.000 words). The Road Less Travelled highlights the process gone through in order to create The Endless Road. The Endless Road is about a girl named Lia. After creating a good life for herself in London, attending university and landing a beautiful girlfriend, life seems pretty good for this young woman. The arrival of Lia’s ex-lover, Juliet, throws everything into a downward spiral. Gradually, it is revealed that Juliet and Lia share a dark past together and how the girls took extreme measures when their families tried to break them apart. A murder is committed and temptation presents itself in the form of a stunning detective named Grace Morgan. The Road Less Travelled documents the evolution of The Endless Road; how it progressed from a mere idea to a novella. The essay furthermore explains how decisions were made regarding plot, character and setting. The Endless Road was inspired by a real case which took place in New Zealand in 1954. The method chosen for writing required painstaking research and the results are described in The Road Less Travelled.

Russia Eternal: Recalling The Imperial Era In Late- And Post-Soviet Literature And Culture Abstract The return of Tsarist buildings, narratives and symbols has been a prominent facet of social life in post- Soviet Russia. My dissertation aims to explain this phenomenon and its meaning by tracking contemporary Russia’s cultural memory of the Imperial era. By close-reading both popular and influential cultural texts, as well as analyzing their conditions of production and reception, I show how three generations of Russian cultural elites from the 1950s until today have used Russia’s past to fight present- day political battles, and outline how the cultural memory of the Imperial epoch continues to inform post- Soviet Russian leaders and their mainstream detractors. Chapters One and Two situate the origin of Russian culture’s current engagement with the pre-Revolutionary era in the social dynamic following Stalin’s death in 1953.
