TOMMY EMMANUEL (Bio for 'Accomplice One' Album) “If You Like Guitar Playing, It Simply Doesn't Get Any Better Than Tommy
TOMMY EMMANUEL (Bio for ‘Accomplice One’ Album) “If you like guitar playing, it simply doesn’t get any better than Tommy.” – Jason Isbell Tommy Emmanuel has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. Or at least they would if he was the kind of artist who was ever satisfied. At the age of six, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a Certified Guitar Player by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. All the while, Tommy has hungered for what’s next. When you’re widely acknowledged as the international master of the solo acoustic guitar, what’s next is an album of collaborations with some of the finest singers, songwriters and, yes, guitarists alive today. “For me, music has always been about collaboration–the push and pull you get from another human being’s energy,” explains Tommy. “Even when I play solo, it feels like I’m playing to the emotions I’m getting from the crowd. To feel the love or the joy or the hope coming through these other pickers and singers was electric–I played in ways I never would on my own.” Accomplice One is a testament to Tommy’s musical diversity, the range of expression that stretches from authentic country-blues to face-melting rock shredding, by way of tender and devastating pure song playing. -

Come with me. A generation ago, the astronomer Carl Sagan stood here and launched hundreds of millions of us on a great adventure: the exploration of the universe revealed by science. It's time to get going again. We're about to begin a journey that will take us from the infinitesimal to the infinite, from the dawn of time to the distant future. We'll explore galaxies and suns and worlds, surf the gravity waves of space-time, encounter beings that live in fire and ice, explore the planets of stars that never die, discover atoms as massive as suns and universes smaller than atoms. Cosmos is also a story about us. It's the saga of how wandering bands of hunters and gatherers found their way to the stars, one adventure with many heroes. -

The Endless Road
Hugvísindasvið The Endless Road On Writing The Road Less Travelled B.A. Essay Hildur Guðbergsdóttir January 2015 University of Iceland School of Humanities Department of English The Endless Road On Writing The Road Less Travelled B.A. Essay Hildur Guðbergsdóttir Kt.: 140684-3849 Supervisor: Anna Heiða Pálsdóttir January 2015 Abstract It was inspiration and a lifelong passion for stories that prompted the writing of this novella called The Endless Road (about 28.000 words) and an essay called The Road Less Travelled (around 3.000 words). The Road Less Travelled highlights the process gone through in order to create The Endless Road. The Endless Road is about a girl named Lia. After creating a good life for herself in London, attending university and landing a beautiful girlfriend, life seems pretty good for this young woman. The arrival of Lia’s ex-lover, Juliet, throws everything into a downward spiral. Gradually, it is revealed that Juliet and Lia share a dark past together and how the girls took extreme measures when their families tried to break them apart. A murder is committed and temptation presents itself in the form of a stunning detective named Grace Morgan. The Road Less Travelled documents the evolution of The Endless Road; how it progressed from a mere idea to a novella. The essay furthermore explains how decisions were made regarding plot, character and setting. The Endless Road was inspired by a real case which took place in New Zealand in 1954. The method chosen for writing required painstaking research and the results are described in The Road Less Travelled. -

Tommy Emmanuel Critics’ Quote Sheet (2020)
TOMMY EMMANUEL CRITICS’ QUOTE SHEET (2020) ALBUM REVIEWS TOMMY EMMANUEL & JOHN KNOWLES ‘Heart Songs’ (2019) Critics’ Quotes: “Heart Songs…is a collection of melodic masterpieces, such as the Bee Gee’s ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ and tearjerkers like Hank Williams’ ‘Cold, Cold Heart,’ delivered with utmost respect for the composition. Throughout most of the affair, Emmanuel plays the lead role with lyrical grace accompanied with harmonic brilliance by Knowles.” --Jimmy Leslie, Guitar Player, March 5, 2019 “Somewhere, (Chet) Atkins surely must be smiling over the gorgeous arrangements of two country classics on this album: Hank Williams’ “Cold, Cold Heart” and Don Gibson’s “I Can’t Stop Loving You.” Whether Emmanuel or Knowles is engaging in intricate fingerpicking, delivering a subtle bass line or offering chiming coloration, each has the ability to highlight the melodic contours of whatever material he interprets. The diverse program here includes studio renditions of “Somewhere” (from West Side Story), the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” Billy Joel’s “Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me” (popularized by Bonnie Raitt) before concluding with a couple of live tracks.” --Bobby Reed, Downbeat Magazine, January 31, 2019 “What happens when two fantastic guitarists join forces to perform their favorite songs? Pure magic. Featuring the acoustic wizardry drenched in emotion, these two guitarists know how to take a classic (‘How Deep Is Your Love’) and deliver it with aplomb.” --Laura B. Whitmore, Parade, December 13, 2018 “For decades, acoustic guitar virtuosos Tommy Emmanuel and John Knowles have dazzled with their skills, from intricate runs to coaxing unexpected sounds from their instruments. -

Russia Eternal: Recalling The Imperial Era In Late- And Post-Soviet Literature And Culture Abstract The return of Tsarist buildings, narratives and symbols has been a prominent facet of social life in post- Soviet Russia. My dissertation aims to explain this phenomenon and its meaning by tracking contemporary Russia’s cultural memory of the Imperial era. By close-reading both popular and influential cultural texts, as well as analyzing their conditions of production and reception, I show how three generations of Russian cultural elites from the 1950s until today have used Russia’s past to fight present- day political battles, and outline how the cultural memory of the Imperial epoch continues to inform post- Soviet Russian leaders and their mainstream detractors. Chapters One and Two situate the origin of Russian culture’s current engagement with the pre-Revolutionary era in the social dynamic following Stalin’s death in 1953. -
