TOMMY EMMANUEL (Bio for 'Accomplice One' Album) “If You Like Guitar Playing, It Simply Doesn't Get Any Better Than Tommy
TOMMY EMMANUEL (Bio for ‘Accomplice One’ Album) “If you like guitar playing, it simply doesn’t get any better than Tommy.” – Jason Isbell Tommy Emmanuel has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. Or at least they would if he was the kind of artist who was ever satisfied. At the age of six, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a Certified Guitar Player by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. All the while, Tommy has hungered for what’s next. When you’re widely acknowledged as the international master of the solo acoustic guitar, what’s next is an album of collaborations with some of the finest singers, songwriters and, yes, guitarists alive today. “For me, music has always been about collaboration–the push and pull you get from another human being’s energy,” explains Tommy. “Even when I play solo, it feels like I’m playing to the emotions I’m getting from the crowd. To feel the love or the joy or the hope coming through these other pickers and singers was electric–I played in ways I never would on my own.” Accomplice One is a testament to Tommy’s musical diversity, the range of expression that stretches from authentic country-blues to face-melting rock shredding, by way of tender and devastating pure song playing. -

Az immáron 11. alkalommal megszervezett nemzetközi fesztivál programjai a város a város 7 különböző pontján zajlott: a Kultúrpalotában, a Művészeti Egyetemen, a marosvásárhelyi középkori várban, Zanza Café& Bistroban, J’ai Bistrot-ban, illetve a Weekend szabadidős- és sportközpontban, ahol Ausztrália, Venezuela, Japán, Ausztria, Franciaország, Görögország, Magyarország, Németor- szág, Szerbia es Románia elismert művészeit látthattuk, hallhattuk. 1994-ben a John Farnham Band-be került, azausztráliai John Farnham meghívása révén Stuart Fraser mel- lé a Noiseworks-ből a Concert For Rwanda albumra. -

Diggin' You Like Those Ol' Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America
Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records 181 Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America Tammy L. Kernodle Today’s absolutist varieties of Black Nationalism have run into trouble when faced with the need to make sense of the increasingly distinct forms of black culture produced from various diaspora populations. The unashamedly hybrid character of these black cultures continually confounds any simplistic (essentialist or antiessentialist) understanding of the relationship between racial identity and racial nonidentity, between folk cultural authenticity and pop cultural betrayal. Paul Gilroy1 Funk, from its beginnings as terminology used to describe a specific genre of black music, has been equated with the following things: blackness, mascu- linity, personal and collective freedom, and the groove. Even as the genre and terminology gave way to new forms of expression, the performance aesthetic developed by myriad bands throughout the 1960s and 1970s remained an im- portant part of post-1970s black popular culture. In the early 1990s, rhythm and blues (R&B) splintered into a new substyle that reached back to the live instru- mentation and infectious grooves of funk but also reflected a new racial and social consciousness that was rooted in the experiences of the postsoul genera- tion. One of the pivotal albums advancing this style was Meshell Ndegeocello’s Plantation Lullabies (1993). Ndegeocello’s sound was an amalgamation of 0026-3079/2013/5204-181$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:4 (2013): 181-204 181 182 Tammy L. Kernodle several things. She was one part Bootsy Collins, inspiring listeners to dance to her infectious bass lines; one part Nina Simone, schooling one about life, love, hardship, and struggle in post–Civil Rights Movement America; and one part Sarah Vaughn, experimenting with the numerous timbral colors of her voice. -

Gillian Eastoe & Terry Murray
Gillian Eastoe & Terry Murray present "Excellent! Students said 'wicked'…'best assembly ever'…'best four bucks I have ever spent' – We would gladly have the performance again next year" Robinvale SC, Vic "Thanks again for your great concert! The students are still buzzing about it. Hope to see you again next year if not sooner" All Saints College, NSW "A vibrant performance which totally captured students attention" Reservoir DHS, Vic "Great enthusiasm & love of music making was evident in the performers. We will have them back" St Francis Xavier College, ACT THE PERFORMANCE This specifically designed high school Rock show is high energy, fun, informative and crammed with full-on Rock music. Kicking of with a high energy, well known Rock’n’Roll song, it then takes a leap back to the musical influences which formed Rock’n’Roll such as Blues, Country & Western and Gospel. Terry & Gillie explore how the music evolved to give Rock its unmistakable edge through the introduction of the solid body guitar by Leo Fender in the 50’s and then the invention of pedals and sound effects. They also cover the influence of the major bands such as The Beatles, Cream, Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones & female rock legends such as Janis Joplin, Tina Turner and Dusty Springfield. Students will recognize many of the songs that have survived the test of time and those that have become recent hits again. They will also get a chance to get up for a dance during ‘Nutbush City Limits’ if teachers and space permit. THE PERFORMERS Gillian Eastoe: Gillian Eastoe was named in the Australian Book of Rock‘n’Roll as a top performer in the late 70's & early 80's with her band "Gillian Eastoe and King Dog" which featured Phil Emmanuel on guitar.
