Although they use a range of dung types, there have been several reports of dung beetles showing a preference for certain feces. However, exactly what determines dung preference in dung beetles remains controversial. In the present study, we investigated differences in dung beetle communities attracted to horse or cow dung from a functional diversity standpoint. The neococcoids form a mono- phyletic group supported by both morphological and genetic data. In contrast, the monophyly of the archaeococcoids is uncertain and the higher level ranks within it have been controversial, particularly since the late Professor Jan Koteja introduced his multi-family classification for scale insects in 1974. Recent phylogenetic studies using molecular and morphological data support the recognition of up to 15 extant families of archaeococcoids, including 11 families for the former Margarodidae sensu lato, vindicating Koteja’s views. Archaeococcoids are represented better in the fossil record than neococcoids, and have an adequate record through the Tertiary and Cretaceous but almost no putative coccoid fos- sils are known from earlier. -

Family Gicadellidae Typhlocybinae : Typhlocybini ( Part i ) Nlyazd LODOS* Ayla KALKANDELEN** Summary Turkish fauna of Typhloeybini, excluding Eupteryx species, is represented by 19 species of 9 genera as a re su lt of this study. Seven newly recorded species are: Edwardsiana avellanae (Edw.), E. flavescens (F.), E. sallcioola (Edw.), Eupteryeyba jueunda (H.S.), Ficoeyba fiearia (Horv.) , Typhloeyba quereus (F.) and Aguriahana germart (Zett.). Distribution, abundanee and the plants on which the specimens were eolleeted of eaeh species are given. Introduction Turkish T!yphlocilbini was not studied as a whole up to date. Howe ver, only 12 species of this group have been reported previouslv by se veral workers, The Hrst record made by Fahringer (1922) was Ed wardsiana Iethierryi (Edw.). Metcalf (1968) also Iisted this species from Turkeyaccording to Fahringer (1.c.). Dlabola (1957) reported Ribautiana ognevi (Zach.) trom Turkey tınder the name of 'Iyphlocyba horvathiana Dlab, Linnavuori (1965) also recorded such species as Linnavuoriana sexmaculata (Hardy), Youngiada tarsalis Linn. and Zygineı1la pulchra (Löw) from Turkey. Ural et al. (1973) recorded Edwardsiana spinigera (Edw.) during the taunistic study in hazel orchards in eastern Black Sea Coast. (Coleoptera, Carabidae). In addition, we present ten new records of Laboulbeniales from several countries in southern and southeastern Asia on coleopteran hosts. These are Blasticomyces lispini from Borneo (Indonesia), Cantharomyces orientalis from the Philippines, Dimeromyces rugosus on Leiochrodes sp. from Sumatra (Indonesia), Laboulbenia anoplogenii on Clivina sp. from India, L. cafii on Remus corallicola from Singapore, L. satanas from the Philippines, L. timurensis on Clivina inopaca from Papua New Guinea, Monoicomyces stenusae on Silusa sp. from the Philippines, Ormomyces clivinae on Clivina sp. from India, and Peyritschiella princeps on Philonthus tardus from Lombok (Indonesia). Laboulbeniales are obligate parasites on invertebrate hosts, which include insects (mainly beetles and flies), millipedes, and mites. -

Two new species of Mesochria from Fiji are described and illustrated: M. schlingeri Thompson, n. sp. and M. vulgaris Thompson, n. sp. A key to genera of Aniso- podidae and key to the species of Mesochria species are provided, along with notes on the classification of the family. INTRODUCTION Wood gnats (family Anisopodidae) are common flies in forests as their name implies (Sylvicola Harris, the type genus, means “lover of woods” in Latin). They are found on all continents except Antarctica and on most major islands (Indonesia, Madagascar, New Zealand, Philippines, West Indies), but are less numerous on smaller, “oceanic” islands, with species only being recorded from the Canaries, Lord Howe, Maderia, New Cale- donia, Samoa, Seychelles, and now Fiji. One species has been introduced into the Hawai- ian Islands (Thompson & Rogers 1992). In the Pacific, only the genera Sylvicola (intro- duced into Hawai‘i, otherwise in Australia and New Zealand), Mycetobia Meigen (New Caledonia) and Mesochria Enderlein (Samoa, Fiji) occur. Only 10 specimens of Mesochria representing 9 species have been reported since the group was described about a hundred years ago. In the first years of the current Fiji bio- logical survey, 73 specimens representing two new species were collected. -

Stibick Introduction Introduction Fruit flies in the family Tephritidae are high profile insects among commercial fruit and vegetable growers, marketing exporters, government regulatory agencies, and the scientific community. Locally, producers face huge losses without some management scheme to control fruit fly populations. At the national and international level, plant protection agencies strictly regulate the movement of potentially infested products. Consumers throughout the world demand high quality, blemish-free produce. Partly to satisfy these demands, the costs to local, state and national governments are quite high and increasing as world trade, and thus risk, increases. Thus, fruit flies impose a considerable resource tax on participants at every level, from producer to shipper to the importing state and, ultimately, to the consumer. (McPheron & Steck, 1996) Indeed, in the United States alone, the running costs per year to APHIS, Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ), (the federal Agency responsible) for maintenance of trapping systems, laboratories, and identification are in excess of US$27 million per year and increasing. This figure only accounts for a fraction of total costs throughout the country, as State, County and local governments put in their share as well as the local industry affected. -

Accepted 11 January, 2012 Acanthiophilus helianthi Rossi (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a pest of safflower and its management is of great challenge because of its fecundity and concealed larval habitat. Potential components of an integrated pest management program for A. helianthi were investigated at the Gachsaran Agricultural Research Station, in southern Iran from November, 2008 to July, 2009. For the life cycle studies, the infected flower heads were collected from an experimental field plot and were developed from egg to adult under laboratory conditions. The results showed that the first adults emerged gradually in mid April, 2009. Female A.helianthi had a pre-oviposition period of 5.8 ± 1.0 days and the average fecundity was 27 ± 3.2 eggs. The eggs were laid in the bracts of flower heads singly or in clusters of 3-18. The Incubation period was 3.8 ± 0.6 days under field conditions and 3.4 ± 0.6 days under cage conditions. Three larval instars occurred, and the larval phase was 7-10 days. Males emerged earlier than females, but the longevity of the adult females (12 ± 3.0) was significantly greater than that of males (8 ± 1.0).
