  • Reshaping a Tradition. Founding the Habsburg-Lorraine Dynastic State in the 18Th Century
Исторические исследования www.historystudies.msu.ru _____________________________________________________________________________ Лебо К. Reshaping a tradition. Founding the Habsburg-Lorraine dynastic state in the 18th century

• The Habsburg Monarchy Makes Peace (1606)
Volume 1. From the Reformation to the Thirty Years War, 1500-1648 Rebels and Ottomans – The Habsburg Monarchy Makes Peace (1606) War and peace between the Ottoman sultans and the Holy Roman emperors was a major strand of Imperial history from the Ottomans’ first invasion of Hungary in 1526 to their decisive defeat at Imperial hands in Vienna in 1683. In contested Hungary, there were alternating periods of serious campaigning (1526-47, 1593-1606, 1663-83) and long, negotiated truces (1547-93, 1606-63). In its early phase, this contest played a significant role in the Protestant Reformation, for it provided the Protestant princes with a tactic that became a policy: no taxes without concessions on religion. During the next decades, some saw the Ottoman threat as a more or less welcome Habsburg problem, others as a threat to the Empire. Financial and symbolic goods played an important role in this rhythm. For example, the peace of 1547, which was renewed in 1562 and 1590, contained passages in which the Holy Roman emperor acknowledged the Ottoman overlordship of Hungary and agreed to pay the sultans 30,000 Venetian ducats per year in tribute. Between major campaigns, the respective positions were held by two heavily fortified systems of defense. On the Habsburg side, the defensive line was called “the military frontier” and was manned by Croats, Vlachs, and Serbs who were both free farmers and resident warriors. Trading across the frontier was a reality, but so were raids in strength, which sometimes presaged major outbreaks of all-out war. One such incident occurred in 1592, when Emperor Rudolph II sent a large force to the front and helped spark the so-called Long War.

  • Crop Prices in the Austrian Monarchy (1770–1816): the Role of Crop Failures and Money Inflation
ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT CROP PRICES IN THE AUSTRIAN MONARCHY (1770–1816): THE ROLE OF CROP FAILURES AND MONEY INFLATION J. Blahovec Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Faculty of Engineering, Prague, Czech Republic The paper is based on data about local cereal prices in Bohemia recorded in the course of 46 years (1770–1816) by F.J. Vavák, Czech farmer living close to Prague. This information appeared in a series of his memoirs published within 1907–1938 and in 2009. The data analysis shows that annual means of prices of wheat, rye, and barley are relatively well correlated and can be used for illustration of the state monetary situation. A higher variation of the annual mean values was observed only in times of crop failure and was also related to the new harvest. The data obtained for pea differ from the data mentioned above. It was shown that the market prices were influenced mainly by crop failures caused by weather and climate and by the state monetary policies. The money purchasing power was influenced either by objective causes, like crop failures of reversible character, or by subjective changes caused mainly by inflationary monetary policies which in the case of Austria had conduced to a state bankruptcy. cereals; market; weather; monetary policy; bankruptcy doi: 10.1515/sab-2015-0026 Received for publication on January 16, 2015 Accepted for publication on June 24, 2015 INTRODUCTION for financing a powerful army, the problem was re- solved traditionally by various methods of credit. Nosova WEST EUROPEAN SEAL MATRICES FROM COLLECTION OF NICOLAY LIKHACHEV The article discusses the corpus of West European seal matrices kept at the Scientific Archives of St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Previously, they were part of a collection of academician N. P. Likhachev (1862–1936). In the course of attribution we have found three matrices which seem to be absolutely identical to those from the museum collection in the town of Bassano del Grappa, Italy, which previously belonged to the Count Antonio Maria Luigi Calzamatta (1827–1905). This enabled a clarification of the earlier history of the two collections, which proved a genealogical connection with the collection of Count Giovanni Lazzara (1621–1690). This collec- tion was so well known that Christina, Queen of Sweden, wanted to buy it. Evidently after the death of Giovanni Lazzara collection was sold to the Cabinet of Louis XIV (The Cabinet of medals of the French National Library). However, this theory is not justified. In another version the collection was bought by Nicolas-Joseph Foucault (1643–1721), politician and honorary member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres. After changing several owners, Foucault’s collection came in 1727 in the cabinet of medals, except the seals. At the same time, some of the matrices from Lazzara’s collec- tion are kept nowadays in the Bottacin Museum in Padua. Most likely, the seals did not leave Italy, and N. P. Lihachev acquired his matrices there, but not in France.
