Sarah Schneider, 26, lives with a German passport in Austria:

"For 6 years I live in Austria. The Austrian policy creates the conditions for my life here. In order to feel politically represented here and to be able shape my environment democratically, ithe parliamentary elections should be also my elections. "

Evi Genetti, 40, lives with an Italian passport in Austria:

"I live for more than 20 years in Austria and pay taxes here. My daughter, who was born in Vienna, did not receive the Austrian citizenship at birth. The election law is as antiquated as the civil rights -. Unfortunately, otherwise I could vote those out, who are responsible for both. "

Izmaylova Alisa, 35, lives with Uzbek passport in Austria:

"For nearly a decade, I live in Austria. I wonder why I cannot vote and contribute to society. Undoubtedly, life in Austria is at a high level. When I tell them how everyday problems are being solved in Austria, my listeners in Uzbekistan are simply amazed. That's why it is sad to see how many eligible voters do not use their rights and do not vote, while others who would like to help shape society are excluded from voting. Every vote counts. "

Paulo Bitencourt, 46, lives with a Brazilian passport in Austria:

"That after 23 years in Austria my right to citizenship and the right to political participation has been refused, I can only describe as irrational. This policy causes me to think that the real reason is to exclude me and all who are in the same situation from the democratic process and to keep them in a parallel society. "

Hernan Villamizar, 26, lives with Colombian passport in Austria:

"For the last 9 years, Austria is the centre of my life. I'm studying, working and living in Vienna. Of course I have followed Austrian politics throughout this time. Be it the increases of tuition fees to the increase in parking fees or the army conscription. But I was never allowed to officially voice my opinion. I think that is wrong. Pay taxes, comply with the law, etc. - - with the fulfillment of our duties the fulfillment of our rights should automatically be guaranteed - to participate in elections, to carry public office, to the availability of the social system, etc. If a large part of the population is refused from democratic participation then the legitimacy of the state and its laws are put in question. The Republic of Austria has to solve that. "

Buskers Festival

The third Vienna Street Art Festival takes place on Karlsplatz from 13 to 15 September. Artists from across Europe display their expertise – from music to fire shows to acrobatics.

For a whole weekend in the middle of September, Karlsplatz belongs to the street artists. Around 30 artists' groups present their wide-ranging repertoires at the free open-air spectacle. Musicians and drummers perform, as do fire artists, acrobat, pantomimes, jugglers and magicians. There is also street art, break-dance and performances, as well as a special program for children.

Of course, food stands are an essential feature of the open-air festival. When things quiet down on Karlsplatz at night, the party continues at the Buskers after-parties at Club U and Ost Klub.

Kokoschka in photographs

The Leopold Museum dedicates to Oskar Kokoschka an exhibition that focuses on photographs from his life for the first time.

Sven Simon, Oskar Kokoschka and Konrad Adenauer drinking schnapps in front of the portrait of Adenauer, Cadenabbia, 1966

Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) was one of the most important Austrian artists of the 20th century. He numbers amongst the main protagonists of the Modern era. His works are world-famous. One little known fact is that Kokoschka's life and creative work is documented in an extensive series of photos. From the artist's estate, which is located in the Vienna University for Applied Arts, the Leopold Museum has created the exhibition "Kokoschka. Das Ich im Brennpunkt": unique photos and whole photographic series are directly compared against the works of the artist.

The exhibition presents, for example, some of the famous portraits of Kokoschka, the creation of which can be traced in detail through photos of the portrait sittings. Some of the photographs were taken by renowned photographers. Anonymous snapshots are also amongst the images. The photos placed alongside Kokoschka's paintings and graphics to provide additional information.

200 years of Verdi and Wagner

Birthdays must be celebrated. Especially the 200th, like those of both composers born in 1813, Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi. Vienna's opera houses place a strong emphasis on this in their programmes. The Jewish Museum is presenting a Wagner exhibition. And at the Music Film Festival, their works can be enjoyed in the open air.

Cosima and Richard Wagner

Giuseppe Verdi

The Vienna State Opera is presenting many Verdi operas in the second half of 2013: La Traviata, Otello, Nabucco, Simon Boccanegra (with Thomas Hampson), Aida, Don Carlo (with Ramón Vargas) and Un ballo in mascera, as well as a Verdi gala. Tristan and Isolde by Wagner will be presented - his version of the medieval material about love and love-death revolutionised the music world.

In honour of Wagner, the Theater an der Wien is presenting Verdi's Attila in July 2013. The humorous New Year's Eve programme, ArriveVerdi in the Vienna Chamber Opera will end the Wagner-Verdi anniversary year in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

In the Vienna Volksoper, musicals and ballet will be on the stage, many in , in addition to opera and operetta. From 16 November, Verdi's Il Trovator will be presented in the original Italian version.

At the Music Film Festival at City Hall in the summer, Wagner and Verdi will be emphasised: Wagner's entire Ring will be shown and there will be a classic each week by Verdi, or even rarities, such as Nabucco, Rigoletto, I Masnadieri and his Requiem.

Wagner exhibitions

For the Wagner anniversary year, the Jewish Museum Vienna is showing the critical exhibition "Euphoria and Unease. Jewish Vienna and Richard Wagner" from 24 September 2013. Wagner established himself as an anti-Semitic leading figure within the German speaking public, on the one hand, while having an enormous influence on his time and his posterity through his musical works, on the other hand.

Verdi, Wagner and Vienna

The Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi, travelled to Vienna on his first foreign journey in 1843, where he conducted the first performance of one of his operas (Nabucco) outside of his home country in the Käntnertortheater, which was an important opera house at that time. By

the way, the musicians that he considered to be progressive were the Vienna Philharmonic, which was founded at that time. In 1875, Verdi directed Aida and the Requiem in Vienna.

In 1857, the first Richard Wagner opera that was performed in its entirety in a suburban theatre in Vienna was Tannhäuser. One year later, Lohengrin came out at the Hofoper [Court Opera]. Empress Elisabeth was also present at an acclaimed concert in the Musikverein in 1862. Wagner rehearsed Tannhäuser (Viennese version) and Lohengrin himself in 1875. He then conducted the latter once in 1876.

Guided tour "Do you love Wagner? And Verdi?"

Wagner left behind numerous trails in Vienna, Verdi just a few. The guided city walk offers you an entertaining way to get to know the two musicians.

Hollywood in Vienna

The universe and intergalactic spheres are the topic of the film music gala "Hollywood in Vienna" on 3 and 4 October at the Wiener Konzerthaus. The journey "On to New Worlds" continues with "A Tribute to James Horner", star guest and creator of famous film melodies such as "Avatar" and "Titanic".

The ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna (RSO) and Oscar prize-winner James Horner, composer of many great Hollywood melodies, send the audience "On to New Worlds". On board Star Trek and Apollo 13, listeners go on a musical journey to the universe, where all sorts of aliens are to be encountered in the sounds of Gattaca, Artificial Intelligence and Independence Day.

A Tribute to James Horner The Best of Horner Medley starts with the music to Avatar and und visualizes the fascination of the moon Pandora. A Beautiful Mind explores the depths of the human psyche; in Legends of the Fall, the listener can dream of rural idyll, and in Braveheart follow the fighter on his path to freedom. The journey comes to an end on board the sinking Titanic.

These highlights from the oeuvre of James Horner are performed by the RSO Wien under the direction of David Newman. James Horner himself will also stand at the conductor’s desk.

At the festive close of the gala, James Horner will receive the Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award 2013. This award is one in a series of other important prizes: including two Oscars, seven Oscar nominations and two Golden Globes.

Dear Members,

For anyone living outside the UK but renting cars in Europe (including UK), it is a great way to save a huge amount on car insurance EXCESS COVER.

As you may know, Car Rental companies quote all inclusive car hire but then tell you the first 500-800 pounds (excess) is not covered and you would have to pay that if you have as much as a scratch!! They offer you Excess Cover insurance that can be as much as the actual daily rental cost!

I always said no to excess cover and took the risk. TWICE I had a problem costing me 500 pounds each time - true!

Last year I was told about this company based in London and used it. Basically, you can Insure against the Excess costs for as little as around 50 euros a YEAR! So as many rentals through the year inside all of Europe! Great Value and peace of mind.

I think it is worth that you should know of it if you are renting cars!

NEW BCA MEMBER, MELANIE CULVER, WISHES TO PLACE THE FOLLOWING ADVERTISEMENT

My mum is trying to organize an English evening in the Irish Pub in Deutsch Wagram (north of Vienna) for students and adults interested in practising their English. She is looking for a native speaker who would be willing to moderate an evening for a small compensation. More details are attached.

„English evening in the Irish Pub“

DEAR LIAR adapted by Jerome Kilty from the correspondence of Bernard Shaw and Mrs Patrick Campbell 9 Sept – 19 Oct 2013

9 Sept – 19 Oct 2013

No Performance on 10 Sep

Ticket sales from 19 Aug 2013

SYNOPSIS

Jerome Kilty’s Dear Liar marks the very beginning of the 50-year success story that is Vienna’s English Theatre. In 1963 founder Ruth Brinkmann gave her debut as Mrs Patrick Campbell, directed by her husband, co-founder Franz Schafranek, in the Palais Erzherzog Karl in the heart of Vienna. More than any other piece, this show has played a major part in the theatre’s history and thus provides the perfect opening production for the Jubilee Season.

Dear Liar is based upon the enthralling 40-year correspondence between dramatist, Bernard Shaw and legendary actress, Beatrice Stella Campbell known to all as Mrs Patrick Campbell; the letters that hurtled between the pair chronicle the intriguing relationship between these two fascinating and head-strong personalities. Stella and Joey – as the actress fondly called Shaw – are constantly at odds with one another, chiding, wounding, obstinate, cheeky, rude and even downright foolish; and yet, this verbal warfare never diminished their passionate affection for one another. To this day, Shaw’s and Campbell’s “love affair on paper” remains deeply moving.

Agatha Christie’s WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION

4 Nov – 21 Dec 2013

4 Nov – 21 Dec 2013

Ticket sales from 7 Oct 2013

SYNOPSIS

Leonard Vole, an attractive and charming man, is accused of murdering an elderly lady although he protests his innocence. However, all the evidence points towards his guilt, even the motive is there as Leonard is, unexpectedly, heir to her fortune. And yet, although it all seems so cut and dried, experienced barrister, Sir Wilfrid Robarts, shows interest in the case and takes it on, convinced of his client’s innocence and that a conviction is no foregone conclusion.

The play is full of surprising twists and unexpected pieces of circumstantial evidence all of which keep the cunning old fox on his toes. Disaster threatens as the evidence of his number one witness, Vole’s wife, is demolished and she is suddenly a witness for the prosecution. This is not the only coup de théâtre, however, in this spectacular courtroom case which became world-famous through the 1953 Billy Wilder film with Sir Charles Laughton as Sir Wilfred and Marlene Dietrich as the inscrutable Mrs Vole. Agatha Christie at her dazzling best!

ALL BRITISH CITIZENS WHO ARE NEWCOMERS TO AUSTRIA PLEASE READ

Citizens of the European Union and Switzerland have the right to take residence in Austria, if they

• work as employed or self-employed persons • or have a sufficient health-insurance and sufficient financial means • or are students or pupils at a university or school (and have a sufficient health insurance and sufficient means).

The following items are with kind permission from Flights ABICS NEWSLETTER August 2013

British Airways have nibbled at an ideas which cheaper airlines adopted a long time ago, in that they are for the first time making a charge for hold luggage – or to be specific they are to offer a discount to passengers with only cabin baggage – but this is only being operated on Gatwick flights and BA say they have no plans to introduce any further baggage restrictions or charges. This Gatwick “charge” of course has little effect on Vienna travellers as all BA flights to/from Vienna use Heathrow airport. BA now have an “app” which can give you a Boarding Card on your Handy .

The BCA News

Ryanair are always being slated for their hold luggage charges, but it should be noted that they will accept hold baggage of any shape and size, such as a cardboard box, provided its length and breadth do not exceed 119 cm, ie much larger than a standard suitcase.

Have you wondered why wine costs so much more in UK than Austria? The following little article might make things clearer, and help towards confirming why we like living here in Austria!

UK duty on a bottle of wine is a fixed £2, no matter what the wine is worth, and there is also 20% VAT to be added; so it costs £2.40 for a bottle of wine in UK before you begin to pay for the contents (+ VAT) . This tends to set the supermarkets off on a yoyo discounting spree where wines swing between typically £9.99 and £4.99 during the month, so that no self respecting wine buyer buys anything other than at a discount offer. The taxation structure also makes the more expensive wines somewhat better in value.

This £2.40 starting price for UK purchases of wine goes a long way to showing why it is virtually impossible to buy even a cheap 75cl bottle in the UK for less that £3.80, which equates to 4.40€, for which one can buy quite a nice Austrian white.

Joke of the Month No. 13

The "world's funniest joke" is a term used by Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire in 2002 to summarize one of the results of his research . For his experiment, named LaughLab , he created a website where people could rate and submit jokes. Purposes of the research included discovering the joke that had the widest appeal and understanding among different cultures , demographics and countries. The History Channel eventually hosted a special on the subject. The winning joke, which was later found to be based on a 1951 Goon Show sketch by Spike Milligan , was submitted by Gurpal Gosal of Manchester :

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a gun shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"

The BCA News The SuppleSupplement.ment. September 2013 7 Until December 2013 I intend to provide our British (and maybe also Austrian?) members of the BBBCCCA with a selection of, so I hope, interesting historical information, relevant to the appropriate month, about their host country Austria. • Herman VI, Margrave of Baden (died 1250), second husband of Gertrude of Babenberg , the daughter of the late Henry of Mödling , the elder brother of the now late Duke Frederick. She was the primogenitural heir of Duke Frederick and the entire Babenberg line of of Austria. Her first husband Vladislav of Bohemia , Margrave of (died 1247) had already claimed Austrian duchy against Duke Frederick, as Gertrude was heiress of the elder brother. After Herman's death, her third husband Roman, of Novogrudok (married 1252, divorced 1253) continued the claim in 125253. And then Gertrude and Herman's son Frederick I, Margrave of Baden 's claim was asserted to the Babenberg inheritance, but he was killed in 1268, leaving a sister (the future Countess of Heunburg) to continue the line.

King Ottokar II of Bohemia (1233–78), since 1252 husband of the (childless) Margaret of Babenberg , dowager Queen of the Romans and the only surviving sister of Duke Frederick.

BCA The News The SuppleSupplement.ment. September 2013 9 By proximity of blood , she was the closest surviving relative of the last duke. Ottokar and Margaret were proclaimed Duke and Duchess of Austria. However, Margaret was barren and they got divorced in 1260, Ottokar marrying a younger woman. Margaret died in 1267 and left no children (so her heiress would be Gertrude again) but Ottokar kept Austria, Styria etc. claiming to be the heir designated by Margaret in their divorce settlement. He held the duchies until deposed by Rudolf I, King of the Romans in 1276.

Rudolf I (also known as Rudolf of Habsburg ) ( German : Rudolf von Habsburg , : Rudolphus , Czech : Rudolf Habsburský ) (1 May 1218 – 15 July 1291) was King of the Romans from 1273 until his death. Rudolf was the first of the countkings , socalled by the historian Bernd Schneidmüller.

He played a vital role in raising the Habsburg to a leading position among the Imperial feudal . Originally a Swabian count, he was the first Habsburg to acquire the duchies of Austria and Styria , territories that would remain under Habsburg rule for more than 600 years and would form the core of the and the presentday country of Austria .

Count-kings ( German : Grafenkönige ) was a description given by the historian, Bernd Schneidmüller, to the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire between the Great Interregnum and the final acquisition of the royal throne by the Habsburg dynasty in 1438. They were as follows:

• Rudolf of Habsburg , king (1273–1291) • Adolphus of Nassau , king (1292–1298) • Albert I of Habsburg , king (1298–1308) • Henry VII of , king from 1308, emperor (1312–1313) • Louis IV the Bavarian , king from 1314, emperor (1328–1347), • Charles IV of Luxembourg , king from 1346 (reelected in 1347), emperor (1355–1378) • Wenceslaus of Luxembourg , king (1378–1400) • Rupert of the Palatinate , king (1401–1410), House of Wittelsbach • Jobst of Moravia , king (1410–1411), • Sigismund of Luxembourg , king from 1410, emperor (1433–1437)

This categorisation is, however, not universally recognised by historians. In fact, during this period only Rudolf I, Adolphus of Nassau and Henry VII were imperial counts , all the other kings were dukes or (Bohemian) kings and princeelectors.

Imperial Count ( German : Reichsgraf ) was a title in the Holy Roman Empire . In the medieval era, it was used exclusively to designate the holder of an imperial county , that is, a county that was a fief held directly (or immediately ) from the emperor, rather than from a prince who was a vassal of the emperor, such as a duke or prince elector . These imperial counts sat on one of the four "benches" of Counts , whereat each exercised a fractional vote in the Imperial Diet until 1806. In the postMiddle Ages era, anyone granted the title of Count by the emperor in his specific capacity as ruler of the Holy Roman Empire (rather than, e.g. as ruler of Austria, Bohemia, , the , etc.) became, ipso facto , an "Imperial Count", whether he reigned over an immediate county or not.

In 1556, amid great pomp, and leaning on the shoulder of one of his favourites (the 24year old William, Count of Nassau and Orange ) Charles gave away his lands and his offices. The Spanish empire , which included Spain, the Netherlands, Naples , Milan and Spain's possessions in the Americas , went to his son, Philip . His brother, Ferdinand, who had negotiated the treaty in the previous year, was already in possession of the Austrian lands and was also to succeed Charles as Holy Roman Emperor. This course of events had been guaranteed already on 5 January 1531 when Ferdinand had been elected the King of the Romans and so the legitimate successor of the reigning Emperor.

Charles' choices were appropriate. Philip was culturally Spanish: he was born in Valladolid and raised in the Spanish court, his native tongue was Spanish, and he preferred to live in Spain. Ferdinand was familiar with, and to, the other princes of the Holy Roman Empire. Although he too had been born in Spain, he had administered his brother's affairs in the Empire since 1531. Some historians maintain Ferdinand had also been touched by the reformed philosophies, and was probably the closest the Holy Roman Empire ever came to a Protestant emperor; he remained nominally a Catholic throughout his life, although reportedly he refused last rites on his deathbed. Other historians maintain he was as Catholic as his brother, but tended to see religion as outside the political sphere.

Charles' abdication had farreaching consequences in imperial diplomatic relations with France and the Netherlands, particularly in his allotment of the Spanish kingdom to Philip. In France, the kings and their ministers grew increasingly uneasy about Habsburg encirclement and sought allies against Habsburg hegemony from among the border German territories, and even from some of the Protestant kings. In the Netherlands, Philip's ascension in Spain raised particular problems; for the sake of harmony, order, and prosperity Charles had not blocked the Reformation, and had tolerated a high level of local autonomy. An ardent Catholic and rigidly autocratic prince, Philip pursued an aggressive political, economic and religious policy toward the Dutch, resulting in a Dutch rebellion shortly after he became king. Philip's militant response meant the occupation of much of the upper provinces by troops of, or hired by, Habsburg Spain and the constant ebb and flow of Spanish men and provisions on the socalled Spanish road from northern Italy, through the Burgundian lands, to and from Flanders.

BCA The News The SuppleSupplement.ment. September 2013 14 The abdication did not automatically make Ferdinand the Holy Roman Emperor. Charles abdicated as Emperor in January 1556 in favour of his brother Ferdinand; however, due to lengthy debate and bureaucratic procedure, the Imperial Diet did not accept the abdication (and thus make it legally valid) until 3 May 1558. Up to that date, Charles continued to use the title of Emperor.

The Treaty of Baden was the treaty that ended formal hostilities between France and the Holy Roman Empire , who had been at war since the start of the War of the Spanish Succession . It was signed on 7 September 1714 in Baden, Switzerland , and complemented the treaties of Utrecht and of Rastatt , by which Emperor Charles VI accepted the Utrecht Treaty on behalf of the Habsburg Monarchy . In the Baden Treaty, the terms of peace between France and the Holy Roman Empire — formally incomplete — were agreed, and thereby the last of the many conflicts within the War of the Spanish Succession was ended.

The treaty was the first international agreement signed on Swiss territory. In the margins of the conference, the signatories also secretly agreed to a Catholic union to intervene in favour of the Catholic cantons defeated at nearby Villmergen two years previously, as a result of which the Peace of Aarau had ended Catholic hegemony within the Confederacy.

Frederick himself lost half his army in the Battle of Kunersdorf , the worst defeat in his military career, and one that drove him to the brink of abdication and suicide. The disaster resulted partly from his misjudgment of the Russians, who had already demonstrated their strength at Zorndorf and at GrossJägersdorf .

Battle of Kunersdorf

The French planned to invade the British Isles during 1759 by accumulating troops near the mouth of the Loire and concentrating their Brest and Toulon fleets. However, two sea defeats prevented this. In August, the Mediterranean fleet under JeanFrançois de La ClueSabran was scattered by a larger British fleet under Edward Boscawen at the Battle of Lagos . In the Battle of Quiberon Bay on 20 November, the British admiral Edward Hawke with 23 ships of the line caught the French Brest fleet with 21 ships of the line under Marshal de Conflans and sank, captured or forced aground many of them, putting an end to the French plans.

The Russians under General Saltykov and Austrians under General Lacy briefly occupied his capital, Berlin, in October. The end of that year saw Frederick once more victorious, defeating the able Daun in the Battle of Torgau , but he suffered heavy casualties and the Austrians retreated in good order.

In 2013 Austria remembers the “” on Nazi-Germany in 1938. It also recalls the crimes committed by so many Austrians in the Nazi-Machinery but also its hitherto unsung heroes who gave their lives for others . Karl Burian

born 4th August 1896 in Vienna; executed 13 th March 1944 Austrian Officer and Resistance Fighter against the Nazis.

Karl Burian graduated from the military academy in Mährisch Weißkirchen and was a lieutenant in the k.u.k. (Imperial and Royal) Dragoon Regiment No. 11. In World War I he served as the youngest lieutenant in the k.u.k. Dragoon Regiment No. 8. From 1916 to 1917 he was Prisoner of War in Russia. After the war he studied philosophy in Vienna and was a founding member of the Corps Ottonen , Vienna. His antiNazi, Habsburg oriented Austro patriotic attitude should determine his actions from 1933.

In 1936 he joined the Austrian Army as a lieutenant. After the German invasion in 1938 he was transferred to the German army (Wehrmacht), was promoted to captain in August 1938 and has since been active as a Recruitment Inspector in Vienna. As a staunch monarchist and convinced Austrian he sought to rally likeminded people, but was betrayed and was arrested on 13th October 1938. He remained for five years in custody and was eventually following absurd trumped up charges of espionage and for resisting the Third Reich condemned to death on the 9th December 1943 and executed on the 13th March 1944.

Resistance to National Socialism

Burian did not believe that the Nazi regime could last in Austria and continued to pursue legitimist aspirations. Via a Brother of the Corps Ottonen, who had emigrated to Paris in 1938, Burian was commissioned by Otto von Habsburg with the construction of a legitimist association and resistance group in Vienna. She was named after his Corps and called itself The Resistance Group of the Corps Ottonen but called itself also the Central Committee of the Monarchist Movement. This group is recruited amongst others, from legitimist sympathizers

BCA The News The SuppleSupplement.ment. September 2013 26 and Corp Students. Otto von Habsburg was also regularly informed about the expansion of the group’s activities to and Prague.

On the 13th October 1938 Burian was arrested, when he was expecting a messenger with news from Habsburg. After about five years detention a three day trial against Burian and his six codefendents (four were Viennese Ottonen) took place by an external panel of the Berlin People's Court in the Vienna Regional Criminal Court, which ended with his death sentence and long prison terms for the other codefendants.

According to the indictment he was found guilty of forming a legitimist organization that should serve the purpose of the forceful secession of the (Nazi name for Austria) from the Third Reich and the establishment of a monarchy under Otto von Habsburg comprising of all former Austrian territories . The harshness of the judgment was based, inter alia, on the position of Burian as a Wehrmacht officer, and the accusation to have systematically prepared and organised high treason and thus has actually committed treason. The defendants were sentenced to several terms of imprisonment (for example, 8 years in prison for LudwigKrausz Wienner), Burian’s Corp Brother Erwin Drahozwal could escape arrest.

The execution of the verdict against Burian took place on the 13th March 1944 in Vienna’s Regional Criminal Court (Landesgericht) by decapitation. He has remained loyal to the end to his motto: Emperor and the Empire!

The Federal Army of the Second Republic honoured him and his comrade Lieutenant Colonel Franz Heckenast , who was also murdered by the Nazis, by renaming the Army Logistic Centre Building in Schwenkgasse 47 in 1121 Vienna to the Commando Centre Heckenast -Burian.

Legitimist Corps were a phenomenon of interwar Austria. It was the duelling (schlagend) legitimist fraternity, that described themselves, sooner or later, as corps in all known cases.

What these organisations had in common, following the collapse of the monarchy, was that they recruited themselves from conservative circles, former nobility and the military. So they were more or less entitled to call themselves legitimists. For the Corps loyalty to the Emperor and political neutrality before World War I was very acceptable. In the First Republic, however, perceived as politically positioned, new formations had no place in the Corps.

Nevertheless, the legitimist differed from most conservative organisations, because they had neither denominational nor national links: The Roman Catholic organisations rejected the Duel (Mensur), the Student fraternities (Burschenschaften) strongly supported and enforced the German National Movement and the Kösener Corps tended especially since the German war (Prussia versus Austria 1866) rather towards the Prussian-Protestant than the Catholic Habsburg monarchy.
