ABSTRACT: In India till 1991 there was only one television channel –Doordarshan, the public service broadcaster. With the opening up of the Indian economy in early 1990s enabled the entry of private broadcasters in India. The number of television channels has proliferated manifold. By 2005 India had more than 200 digital channels. The number of television channels has grown from around 600 in 2010 to 800 in 2012.This includes more than 400 news and current affairs channel. Technological changes have caused intense competition in news and general entertainment channels, as a result of which there is growth in regional and niche channels. The growth of cable and satellite television and direct to home television services has continued to drive television as the most preferred medium among advertisers. Broadcasters are also tapping into online and mobile media to increase their revenue. This paper seeks to study the impact of privatisation on media policy of the Government of India and how it has evolved various institutional mechanisms to deal with the growth of television as the medium to study the effect of privatisation and convergence on media regulations as television is the most powerful medium. The visual images transmitted by television reach large section of the Indian population irrespective of linguistic and cultural differences. GROWTH OF THE TELEVISION INDUSTRY IN INDIA: Television began in India in 1959 as an educational project supported by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the Ford Foundation. Television was based on the model of a public broadcasting system prevalent in many countries of Europe. -

The company witnessed strong revenue growth of 27.7% in FY2019 supported by healthy growth in subscription and advertisement revenues, and its margins remained strong at an OPM of 68.9% and NPM of 37.5%, aided by its scale, high bargaining power and nil debt position. The company has had zero debt every year, with sizeable cash and liquid investments of Rs. 2,686.5 crore as on March 31, 2019 (PY: Rs,1,896.9), facilitated by its strong accruals. By virtue of ‘Sun TV’ being one of the top viewership channels and having consistently high television rating points (TRP’s), the company has significant bargaining power over its content providers. This, in turn, has aided in control over telecasted content and facilitated advertisement revenue growth. As per the new TRAI order, every customer is entitled to a set free to air channels which may or may not include popular channels offered by major broadcasters. In addition, customers can choose channels/packs offered by the broadcasters based on their interest. However, Sun TV is part of the base pack in its viewership locations by virtue of user preference. -

Zee News has entered the Tamil, Telugu & Kannada markets while Star has entered the Marathi & Bengali segments and has aggressive plans for South India through its JV with Jupiter Entertainment. Increasing competition results in pressure on content/talent and other costs. Zee News management meeting takeaways — (a) ZEEN expects to grow at least 5% more than overall industry; (b) Zee Telugu broke even in 2QFY09 and mgmt expects Zee Kannada to breakeven by mid CY09; (c) Zee Bangla & Zee Marathi contribute to about half of ZEEN's revenues; (d) In Tamil Nadu, ZEEN targets the No 2 position, after Sun TV, within the next 12-18 months. Noteworthy this month: (1) GEC ratings decline as no fresh content aired...— For ~20 days, Hindi GECs were not airing fresh content, which led to a steep drop in ratings. -

Chapter-II A Brief History of Television in India 47 Chapter-II A Brief History of Television in India Television in India— a chronology of events Television came to India on September 15, 1959 with experimental transmission from Delhi. It was a modest beginning with a make shift studio, a low power transmitter and only 21 community television sets. All India Radio provided the engineering and programme professionals. A daily one-hour service with a news bulletin was started in 1965. In 1972 television services were extended to a second city—Mumbai. By 1975 television stations came up in Calcutta, Chennai, Srinagar, Amritsar and Lucknow. In 1975-76 the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment brought television programmes for people in 2400 villages in the most inaccessible of the least developed areas tlirough a satellite lent to India for one year. Doordarshan is a Public broadcast terrestrial television channel run by Prasar Bharati, a board formed by the Government of India. It is one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world in terms of the infrastructure of studios and transmitters. Doordarshan had its beginning with the experimental telecast started in Delhi in September, 1959 with a small fransmitter and a makeshift studio. The regular daily transmission started in 1965 as a part of All India Radio. The television service was extended to a second city Mumbai in 1972. Till 1975, only seven cities were covered by Doordarshan and it remained 48 the only television channel in India. Television services were separated from Radio in 1976. Each office of All India Radio and Doordarshan were placed under the management of two separate Director Generals in New Delhi. -

RE-READING SELECT SHERLOCK HOLMES AND BYOMKESH BAKSHI STORIES: - Several Sherlock Holmes narratives other than A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band" and 'The Adventure of the Three Students", are also replete with Arthur Conan Doyle's anti-subaltern and Orientalist ideologies. Likewise, with the exception of "The Inquisitor", "The Gramophone Pin Mystery", "Where There's a Will" and "Picture hnperfecf, several other Byomkesh Bakshi nairatives assert their author's anti-imperial stance and exemplify specific areas in which the Bengali inquisitor challenges the hegemony of the Eurocentric detective stories, particularly the Sherlock Holmes canon. Kshetra Gupta observes, "Like Saradindu, his detective...[and detecdve stories are]...overwhelmingly Bengali though belonging to a later generation" (Gupta, Satyajiter 8). As demonstrated before, the Byomkesh Bakshi stories written before 1947 banish the colonisers from the Indian colony they themselves have so strenuously developed and modernised, and the remaining twenty three written after the Indian independence develop the former colony as an independent nation with an independent Bengali literature that has, even after being permeated by the colonial conventions, retained an Indianness and has developed itself as an alternative power against the British detective stories like those written by Doyle, Agatha Chiistie and G.K.Chesteiton. Re-reading Select Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh Bakshi Stories 297 Doyle's support of the British colonial expansion and his advocacy of the domination of the Orientals are also present in "A Scandal in Bohemia", the third story of the Sherlock Holmes canon to be first published in the July 1891-edition of The Strand Magazine. -

It has added speed and multimedia to the information which was earlier available only in the print format. Anyone can voice their opinions through computers. Computers have added a new breakthrough in the mass media by cutting edge technology Internet This is most important devoice of the new age media. The discovery of internet can be called the biggest invention in mass media. In earlier days, news used to reach people only with the morning newspaper, but today, live updates reach us simultaneously as the events unfold. For example, the royal wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William was watched live on the internet by millions of people around the world. Internet has inspired interaction and connectivity through its social networking medium. It has become one of the core means of mass communication. One cannot think of leading the life without it. The impact of internet on mass communication: i) Email: Email or electronic mails have drastically reduced the time it took for drafting and sending letters, or mails. Electronic mails have also facilitated lesser usage of paper. ii) ii) Websites: Internet has a plethora of websites dedicated to various people, companies, activities, etc. The most significant utility of these websites is providing information trough search engines, downloads through libraries, and interaction through the social networking sites. Because of these websites, carrying out e-commerce transactions has also become easy. iii) Podcasts: Podcasts are medium of mass communication that includes short video or audio files. -
