As I was contemplating all of the things about my years at Villa, I was flooded with twelve years worth of memorable times. I came to the conclusion that if I even attempted to touch on my favorite experiences from my life at Villa, time could not embrace those countless moments or encapsulate all of the opportunities Villa has gifted to me. One of the most vivid images that comes to mind when I think of Villa is the magnolia tree that protects the front entrance of the school. It is an elegant magnolia that blooms with pink blossoms each spring. Every day for the past twelve years I have walked past this tree. The magnolia is graceful yet strong. Having endured many years, it remains rooted in its original tradition. Roots built upon the rules of St. Benedict, with which the students of Villa Madonna Academy, have been imprinted. From hospitality to scholarship to stewardship, the magnolia radiates a strong sense of community and tradition, uniting the Villa family, though separated by generations. The values and education I have been taught become engrained into my character, preparing me for the world I am about to experience. Villa contrasts many other institutions in the sense that it allows its students to participate in any extracurricular activities they desire, take as many AP classes available, and seek one-on-one attention from faculty. These qualities, though, are not what makes Villa Madonna Academy one of a kind. Rather, it is the presence of the Catholic community on campus. From our school wide Masses to being taught by the Benedictine sisters in our classes, from the Benedictine values rooted in the service we do to the faculty and administration who live those very values, the Benedictine tradition is alive and has been imparted on each and every one of us. For the past twelve years, the sisters and faculty have acted as living examples of the Benedictine values. These values are now part of my character. Tokens I will carry inside for eternity. Indeed, Villa Madonna Academy does have incomparable academics and faculty and students, but perhaps the most notable and impressive aspect of my last twelve years is the century’s worth of tradition I have been privileged to be a part of. August 2016 www.villamadonna.org • 13 Update from the Advancement Office The Legacy of the Sisters of St. Walburg Monastery

In 1904, the Benedictine Sisters of St. Walburg Monastery founded Villa Madonna Academy, and the sisters have been a part of the school ever since. Alums not only share stories about what was learned in the sisters’ classes, but the influence the sisters had on their personal lives as well. A 1951 alum recently told me, “The sisters enjoyed spending time with us. I still remember them rolling up their sleeves to play ball with us in the field.” As further evidence, Sr. Nancy Kordenbrock ’66 says one of her fondest memories of her time working at the Academy was being a dorm mother for boarders.

Over the years, lay teachers and staff have humbly stepped in to fill the sisters’ shoes, and they have had an equally strong impact on students’ lives. We lost one of those truly wonderful teachers this spring when Mrs. Therese Burden died. Her influence was so strong that a scholarship was established in her memory. Therese Burden Our lay teachers and staff see their role as more than a job. They see it as a vocation and are committed to passing on Benedictine values. Mr. Joe Cordonnier, Mr. C, is one of those persons. Mr. C is a high school teacher and the track coach. He plays the guitar at school Masses. In the summers, he leads trips abroad and hosts Camp Awesome. He is also a parent of two Villa students. Mr. C says, “Villa is a family, and at our core rests our beloved Benedictine values. That is what makes Villa special. The values are the heart of our character.”

Girls’ soccer coach Mr. Glenn Rice, also a Villa parent, believes in the Benedictine values of community and service so strongly that he organizes a Day of Team Service for his players every summer. The girls go to Redwood and the Diocesan Children’s Home to play ball and spend time with the adults and children there. For Coach Rice, it is not just about simply teaching the girls to be successful on the field, but teaching them what is really important in life.

For first grade teacher Ms. Sally Zeck, and other Villa teachers, supporting students outside the classroom is as important as supporting them inside the classroom. On Saturday mornings in the fall, you may find Ms. Zeck in the gym cheering her first grade volleyball players on to victory. You may also find her after school praying with the Rosary Club.

Ask Mrs. Mary Pavel, K-6 athletic director and parent of three Villa alums, about Villa, and she will tell you Villa is a special place. She makes it a priority to nurture relationships with alumni, past parents, and other Villa supporters. She builds community.

The original ministry of the sisters of St. Walburg Monastery was education. How fortunate the Northern Kentucky area has been for the faith, influence, and commitment of the Benedictine Sisters. It is a privilege for the Villa faculty and staff today to carry on their legacy.

Warmly,

Maureen Regan Director of Advancement Hiking the hill in skirts, dress shoes, and habits.

22 • Villa Vistas Volume 4, Issue 1 Update to our Alumni from Sr. Nancy Kordenbrock Greetings to my fellow alumni! As I write this, we have just celebrated the feast of St. Benedict. He was a man of peace and respect for every person. At Villa, we have tried to always live by his values. I cannot help but pray that we will renew our commitment to those values of peace, respect and prayer as our country and our world continue to struggle with violence and hatred. As Villa alumni, please join me in prayer and action to make our world a more loving and caring place.

This year, my class of 1966 celebrated our 50th reunion. What a great weekend we had, concluding with the Alumni Luncheon. It was wonderful to renew friendships and catch up with those in attendance. The Outstanding Alumni Awards were a fantastic addition to the event again this year. The entire day was a wonderful experience.

The recipients of the Outstanding Alumni Awards were truly deserving. Reading their stories and listening to their acceptance speeches affirmed their unique contributions to their communities and their appreciation for the role that Villa has played in their lives. The selection committee looks forward to receiving nominees for next year’s awards. There are so many accomplished and caring alumni to be honored.

I encourage each of you to follow Villa on Facebook where pictures and stories capture the daily achievements and activities of students and faculty. You may also find yourself in a “throwback” photo from the past. They will make you smile; I promise!

Please plan to attend VillaRama at Receptions in Erlanger on March 4, 2017 and the Alumni Luncheon on May 21, 2017. We would love to see you there. Feel free to stop into school for a visit. You are always welcome.

Thank you to all our alumni who carry the Villa spirit wherever you are. God bless you always.

Sincerely, Keep in Touch!

Sr. Nancy Kordenbrock, OSB ’66 Alumni – We’d love to know what you are doing these days! Please send us an email at [email protected]. Stay up-to-date with Villa through the website villamadonna.org, our Facebook pages, and Twitter.
