Camryn Manheim Camryn Manheim Actress Activist Acclaimed actress and social activist Camryn Manheim, known for her Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning role on The Practice, has always paved her own path. With success on TV, film, and the bestseller list, Manheim’s career has been defined by versatility, determination, and a sense of adventure. Her rare talents as a comedic and dramatic actress have earned Manheim roles on some of the biggest shows on TV. Best known for her Emmy-winning turn on The Practice, Manheim has also won laughs on Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, and Will & Grace and shook audiences with recurring roles on Law & Order, Extant, and as Control on Person of Interest. Manheim’s fierce determination to defy the beauty myth and casting stereotypes on- and off-screen has resulted in one of Hollywood’s most remarkable success stories. Her New York Times bestseller, Wake Up I’m Fat!, detailed her life with candor and humor. In a TIME magazine essay she wrote, “I dream of a time when we can all accept ourselves and one another. My dream is that by 2025 I'll no longer be getting letters every week from young girls who hate themselves because of the way they look.” Off-screen, Manheim raised everyone’s expectations as a professional poker player, competing on Celebrity Poker Showdown and Celebrity Blackjack. She later used her newfound talents to help others, hosting and playing in celebrity poker tournaments. Manheim was named one of the “Most Intriguing People” by People magazine and “Woman of the Year” by Glamour. Always passionate, with a dash of irreverence, her lectures cover everything from show business to self-esteem. Manheim reminds audiences that life is not a dress rehearsal and to get the part, they must first believe in themselves. A vocal advocate for human rights, Manheim’s social activism has included work with American Civil Liberties Union, RAINN, and Planned Parenthood. She has been honored by the National Council of Jewish Women, the National Lawyers Guild, and received an E! Fashion award from Joan Rivers, which she claims was the hardest award to get. What can I say...it was FABULOUS! Camryn Manheim was one of the best speakers we have ever had. She is truly an extraordinary woman and captivated the audience with her warm, vivacious personality. The women were truly absorbed in her personal story and you could have heard a pin drop. Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Royce Carlton. • Michael Warren Powellis
WELCOME to the Fifteenth Annual Last Frontier Theatre Conference. We at Prince William Sound Community College are very proud of this event, and hopefully by the end of the week you will see why. I started coming to Valdez (for the Conference) in 1995, its third year, and it became an annual pilgrimage for me. I quit jobs to make it here. I ran up credit cards. I did whatever it took for me to get to spend the week here. I crashed on the floor at the college, survived off the food at receptions, and worked on whatever anyone asked me to. No one was more important to me in those early years than Michael Warren Powell, the first coordinator of the Play Lab. I remember being in awe of how insightful the responding panel was critiquing plays that were all (in my opinion) pretty problematic. Michael and the other panelists became my idols. Which made it all the more important to me when one day I was hanging out with friends at the picnic tables in the middle of the park strip and we saw Michael walking our direction. He came up and engaged us in conversation, and we became friends. He let us know that he considered us his peers. In the late 90s, I decided that, of all the people I had met, there was no one whose life I wanted to emulate more than Michael’s. I made producing new work and nurturing playwrights my focus, and the answer to most of my questions can be found in the answer to the question “What would Michael do?” I am very excited to have him back with us this year.
